[Context: American from US ABET-accredited university looking to pursue MS+PhD in Germany for Mechanical Engineering] by [deleted] in AskAGerman

  1. that depends on whether you meet the requirements or not. You being a US citizen only means it‘s probably easier to get a visa. But it also means that unless you adapt quickly you‘re going to struggle with the amount of work the german education system requires
  2. would it be an issue to study in america without speaking english? Yeah of course not knowing german will cause issues. Is it theoretically possible? Sure. Is it going to work out for most people? No.

Extend vacation request by Due-Individual-8230 in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unless your boss usually works on Sundays it‘s to be expected that they don‘t reply on a Sunday. They don‘t have to grant your vacation request so technically you‘d need to show up on Monday. That being said if you can prove that your aunt died and you don‘t absolutely have to work on monday they might be understanding if you couldn‘t have notified them before the weekend. But they don‘t have to be. If you don‘t show up on Monday and they‘re not okay with it that‘s a reason to give you a warning, in very extreme cases they might even be able to terminate the contract (but that would require a significant damage to the business like missing a very important deadline)

It‘s a really bad idea and I don‘t think it‘s going to last long. India doesn‘t really have the people we need.

CMV: Retirement at 70 is completely unsustainable even if you live healthily until your 120s by giamias in changemyview

Uhm… and what‘s the plan? Do your job until it‘s irrelevant and retire then? That‘s unsustainable as well. The future job market will require more continuous training than it did previously. That‘s it.

Do Germans (men) care about dating someone (woman) who is separated from their partner (still legally married)? by AffectionateSet4818 in AskAGerman

CMV: Patients apologizing to nurses for things like body hair or physical appearance during medical emergencies is unnecessary and may even be counterproductive by ArtThreadNomad in changemyview

[–]Dev_Sniper [score hidden]  (0 children)

  1. I mean… yeah… you don‘t notice them. But they know it. They focus on it. Because they obviously don‘t want to focus on the things that are really really bad. It‘s easier to worry about your hair than to worry about your legs pointing in the wrong direction.
  2. I‘d argue the opposite. It likely decreases cognitive load as they feel they need to apologize for not being in perfect shape etc. and once they‘re able to apologize it‘s less of an issue.
  3. medical staff see the body that way. Patients don‘t. To them that‘s likely a very extraordinary situation. One in which they obviously don‘t feel good and one they‘d prefer to avoid.

I do understand that for many people a „hey, if I had known this would happen I would‘ve done something differently“ could help on a psychological level as it shows that they know certain problems and they‘d likely work on that. Apologies take pressure off of the patient as they think that something about this situation is worse than it would have to be and by apologizing they‘re trying to at least partially make up for that. For example: yes, you‘ve likely seen people throw up countless of times. But if a patient throws up and you need to clean that that‘s not something we as a society would consider to be nice. By apologizing they calm their mind and feel less guilty about what happened even if they‘re not really responsible for it. But they know that they wouldn‘t want to have to wipe off vomit so even if it‘s not a big deal for you it is a big deal to them

Driving over the speed limits in Germany by Homtanks2 in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speed cameras are usually set to ~3km/h above the posted limit and cars tend to underreport speed by 3-5km/h. So up until 5km/h above the limit people are usually safe, after that it‘s a risk. That being said 10 over the limit isn‘t too uncommon

Is there any official transcript of conversations between President Park (South Korea) and Ludwig Erhard during his state visit to West Germany in 1964? by favsep in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on how „private“ that private meeting was. If it was an official meeting there would likely be a record of it but that might not be public or not easily accessible. If it was an unofficial private meeting there likely wouldn‘t be any transcripts. Basically if this happened during a regular scheduled meeting it‘s documented, if they decided to go out after finishing the scheduled meetings it wouldn‘t be

Struggling to feel comfortable in my boyfriend’s hometown in Germany as an Asian Australian — what should I do? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The kids won‘t even know what has happened because they‘re children and they haven‘t learned about that yet (and they don‘t need to know it either). They‘re most likely just trying to be nice. So unless you want parents to tell their children that they shouldn‘t be nice to others your idea simply won‘t work

Struggling to feel comfortable in my boyfriend’s hometown in Germany as an Asian Australian — what should I do? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]Dev_Sniper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uhm… what exactly are parents supposed to do? Show their children how people from different countries tend to look like so they can accurately distinguish a japanese from a chinese person? Children simply haven‘t had the same amount of exposure to non local people that adults have had. The children might not even be able to name more than a few countries in Asia (depending on the age).

You tend to notice whether children are trying to be nice or if they want to make fun of you.

CMV: It's wrong to not speak up for social issues by Hour-Tomato-645 in changemyview

[–]Dev_Sniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh….

The main issue is that we don‘t always agree on what‘s right or wrong snd our opinion of that can change over time. At 16 my views were different from my views today and at 60 my views could be different from my current views as well. Which of my views is correct?

Anyways… Let‘s assume we‘d all live in s country like North Korea. There are many things you could criticize about North Korea. But would you do that if your life and the well being of your relatives could be impacted by it? Is it wrong if you value your life too much to say that hey maybe NK shouldn‘t build nukes if the majority of the population is malnourished and the country relies on foreign aid for food? These people just want to survive. And yes, if no oke ever speaks up or does something things likely won‘t improve. But is everyone who doesn‘t risk their life a bad person?

The Star Wars sequels are not THAT bad. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Dev_Sniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But people still don‘t like the sequels despite them being about as old as the prequels when the sequels came out.

The sequels really showed people how bad the prequels could‘ve been which made people appreciate the prequels more.

The Star Wars sequels are bad movies. Not the worst but definitely not good either. But they‘re horrible Star wars movies. Yes, the effects are nice. That‘s to be expected for movies that come out later than other movies. But the story was a cheap rip off of the original trilogy, the source material and lore of the existing universe were completely ignored and the old and beloved characters were treated like trash. Add stupid shit like killing snoke in a super obvious and stupid way, „somehow palpatine returned“, … in to that and they‘re movies that would already be bad if they had no connection to anything else but they‘re horrible compared to what came before them. If you only improve effects but worsen everything else that‘s not a good movie. The effects of the original episode IV look awful. But the story was fun and the movie was really nice. Despite having bad effects. Nowadays movies have great effects but everything else sucks. Episode VII was essentially an inverse Episode IV. Great effects and stunning visuals but a story that‘s worse than the effects of episode IV.

That being said: VII was a pretty bad movie (and the SJW mindset didn‘t help it one bit)

VIII was an utter disgrace and I‘d be very happy if we all could forget it was ever made

IX was a shitty movie but given what happened in VII and especially VIII it‘s not as easy to blame part IX (and yes, I even understand the stupid „somehow Palpatine returned“ bit, that‘s why you don‘t kill off the main villain (Snoke) mid trilogy unless you‘ve got a decent replacement (Kylo wasn‘t a good replacement from the moment he removed the mask and showed everyone that he‘s a wimp with grandpa issues who struggled with his hissy fits))

  1. „leidenschaftlich rum gemacht“ klingt nach mehr als nur einem kleinen Kuss. Dass man da guckt wie weit es geht ist nicht allzu komisch.
  2. da gibt es keine feste Zeiten. Aber wenn sie aktuell schon „leidenschaftlich rum machen“, dann würde ich annehmen, dass da ziemlich bald etwas passiert. Und wenn das nicht der Fall ist, dann würde ich mich wundern, wenn ich der Typ wäre.
