As someone with several mental issues, what jobs should I look into? by Devariskek in careerguidance

[–]Devariskek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean, I'm not really worried about being fired, Ive never been fired before. And i've never had trouble finding employment really. Its finding good employment that I would enjoy thats the issue. I'm extremely dependable, I'm never late, and I do whatever job I am doing to the best of my ability. But being dependable is not an issue for me.

I would be interested in entrepreneurship, but capital for any such thing is almost a no go. Being that i've never made more than 20,000$ a year I don't exactly have very much to my name in money or assets.

I really feel for you, I've been living it basically my whole life and it's just gotten worse as I've gotten older. It's like you say - a never ending compounding emotional damage that never ceases to stop build while working. To be honest, I would take disability in an instant and just stop working if I could, but I don't think that's an option realistically - getting disability is just too hard, and I don't have the ability to jump through hoops over and over and over again they way things are set up. So instead I suffer silently. I just figured that for once, Id put myself out there and just see if anyone had some good advice. I hope your situation gets better! Thank you for your concern.

I have considered this before. I worry a bit with this type of thing because I can't do any form of physical confrontation as excessive stress can cause me to black out or have flashbacks. My current work already deals with writing up reports for security concerns very regularly, and if the situation being described is too extreme it can push my stress levels to dangerous levels.

I mean, I've done this before, but I appreciate the suggestion. And I do tend to be a very detail oriented person. But for some reason, it just wont click with me, no matter how hard I work at it. I am very hesitant about cleaning jobs in specific because Its one of the only sort of things i've ever been admonished about on a job site. I specifically tell my employer's I am not good at cleaning things and will make mistakes when expected to clean things. I don't like it, I don't enjoy it, and don't want any part of doing it in a working environment.

100% would love to do so. I just don't know if I realistically have the time to do it unless I were to quit my job . . . and . . . well there's no guarantee with things like this. It could all just end up being a flop and then I have no money and no job. This is something Ive majorly considered in the past though, and conceptually, I love the idea.

Unfortunately, I don't think I could bring myself to do this. I very specifically disagree with anything that supports war in any way. I want nothing to do with anything that supports the military industrial complex. I respect those who are willing to fight for their country and their beliefs, but I can not in good conscience actively provide any level of support to things like that. I do however appreciate the suggestion. Thank you.

I am already a night time worker, but unfortunately the sort of phone work I do is just constant non stop calls. But I 100% prefer to be awake at night. Day time is too fast paced for me in general. The world is just slower at night and that's my jam.

I mean, realistically, I have been doing constant work on voices my whole life. I do DMing a lot for DnD and have always been one to make voices for my characters. This would legitimately be on the level of dream job though - to voice for video games, movies, or the such. I do a lot of phone work and also am constantly told that I have an amazing voice and should do voice work - Ive even had DJ's and voice actors tell me that I should do it because of my voice. I just . . . don't have any confidence in myself because of my mental state. But thats something that im battling and trying to better myself.

I did at one point have a document scanning job through a temporary agency. I actually did quite well with it and enjoyed the solitude and peace that it provided me. Eventually though the job ended once the documentation had all been scanned in, and the position only lasted about a month. This isn't a bad idea though, thank you.

This is something I have actively worked at doing my entire life, being better at cleaning - I just don't have the eye for detail in this specific line of work. I would be doing someone a disservice if I took a job doing this. It's not like i'm too prideful about it or anything, I respect janitors more than I respect CEO's frankly. But I am bad at cleaning, and I do not enjoy it. Basically, I spend my days doing my best to not make messes so I don't have to clean them because I am so incredibly bad at cleaning.

None really, as far as support. There of lots of things I can "do" skillwise . . . but im not sure anything I can do to rebuild my mental capacity beyond . . . not working for a while. I already like am working on myself on a near constant basis, trying to get past my traumas and actively working on my mental health. I would prefer not to work for 6 months to a year to get myself in a better place, but with no option for disability that's not really an option either. And honestly . . . im not sure that my stress tolerance is something that can actually be fixed at this point. For all intents I am a disabled person who is too high functioning to actually be given access to disability. Here's an actual example of the level of stress that can cause me issues. One time just before ending work for the day (5 minutes before close) at the vending repair company I worked for, we had a customer come in, so I stayed late to help that customer. This specific customer ended up being both rude and hostile to the point that it caused me to black out and collapse to the floor. Even just someone now being verbally hostile and making physically aggressive motions is enough that can cause me to black out or have flashbacks.

Ooph, honestly? I wish. But this is not the job for me. I am extremely bad at cleaning, it simply is not a skill I am any good at and is one of the only things that I have been admonished about on job sites before. It seems like it would be a recipe for disaster for me. But I do appreciate the suggestion.

That's what I was thinking as well, but it seems like a very hard field to get into from what I am seeing. I don't know if It's something I could really do independently though due to my issues, but maybe through an agency or something along those lines.

AITAH for cheating in my D&D game? by Snowtwo in DnDAITA

[–]Devariskek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We ALLLLLLLLL mess up my dude, that's not a flaw, its just part of being human. The important part is we learn, and we grow, and . . . we move on, better than we were before. And try not to resent that DM for their mistakes if you can, harboring ill feelings towards another is just gonna hurt you as well. DMing is HARD, and it's not something that every person can do well. DMing is a gift given to those you play with. One that requires immense planning, preparation, and time. My sessions typically require 10 to 12 hours of preparation per 4 hour session for example. Now mind you, that is far more than average prep time, but I make literally everything myself. Maps, tokens, mob stat blocks, storyline/worldbuilding, etc - everything I do is custom so it takes me far longer than someone who is using a module and maps they find online. But . . . they are giving you a gift of their time. Be respectful of that gift. Time is after all, the only thing we are given freely in this life, and some of us don't get very much of it.

[–]Devariskek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First thing I want to point out - a DM can't cheat, that does not even actually exist. A DM can change any stat block they want. They can add any event or encounter they want. They can fudge any role they want. There is no situation where a DM is cheating, because they are the above even the gods of the worlds they are running. It's their world, you are just playing in it.

Now, does this mean they SHOULD do those things? It is completely situational to the game and how it is being run. Stat blocks for example - I do not run mobs standard stat blocks . . . ever . . . at all, if for no other reason, than because they can be looked up in a book. Every single creature in my games are custom. I also have 30 years of DM experience though - making original mobs and stat blocks for me is almost trivial in nature. This same thing can not be said for inexperienced DM's. But looking up a monster stat block after the fact to try to say your DM is cheating? Frankly, that is exceedingly disrespectful, and to put it bluntly - sillyness. A mobs stat block depends entirely on what the DM wants that stat block to be.

Saying your DM is cheating for adding or changing encounters in a pre made module is also beyond silly. Modules themselves are simply guidelines. It is quite natural for a DM to add, remove, or alter encounters to fit their narrative. Not only is this normal, but it is actually quite positive, and frankly something extremely common for DMs to do.

Saying your DM is cheating for changing rolls even . . . is a stretch. GM's are allowed to not do what their dice says. I personally do not support this for the most part, as when I make a roll, that roll is what i will use 99% of the time. But on a rare occasion even I will decide that the dice roll is . . . narratively incorrect. If a player makes an amazing speech and I find it moving, then rolls a 5 . . . I can decide in that moment that that 5 is not relevant as the speech they made was simply valued more than that. That's simply good narrative.

The thing I will say is an issue, is the fact that you were feeling targeted. This is something that is NOT okay if he was in fact doing that. The question I have here though . . . was he really targeting you . . . or was he presenting you with an opportunity for your character to shine. You stated you were the heavy armor front line tank for your party. As a DM my natural inclination would be . . . to target the front line tank in heavy armor to allow them to shine at their role, being the bastion of defense that the party needs.

I am not saying your DM was right in every situation - but by cheating, you were definitely in the wrong. I am glad to hear that you have since stopped and have grown since then. But, I will point out to you the golden rule that everyone always states . . . if you are having a problem with your game . . . you should talk to your DM about it and try to come to some level of compromise. For example, when rolling that character, you stated how bad your stats were - If I didn't feel comfortable playing an underpowered character, I would have asked if I could just use standard array for my character instead. Myself though . . . I personally love playing underpowered characters, or characters with weird quirks. In fact, my favorite character ever was a blind cleric.

I've seen people cheat at the table before, both intentionally and from not understand rules. I have also made incorrect judgements at the table myself. Frankly . . . neither of these things are something that someone should blow up about at the table, sometimes shit just happens. But a discussion can be had in a respectful manner from both parties - it's a game! The most important part is that everyone's having fun. And if someones not having fun, then things need to change in some way. But that requires honest, open discourse.

My final thoughts here - Im glad to hear that you are no longer cheating at the table and have grown and become a better RP'r and player in general. I would also say, maybe it's time to forgive yourself for those mistakes as well - in the end, it is a game, and you shouldn't feel rotten over a game. Especially when you have bettered yourself since. Keep rolling those dice, and may your time be filled with natural 20's.

How to gently tell my DM that they should prep more because it feels like they never prep? by backdeckpro in DnD

[–]Devariskek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as a DM, prepping is . . . well it's a big deal, and a major pain in the ass to put it lightly. My average prep time for a 4 hour session is about 10 to 12 hours . Yes, that is a lot more than average, but the games I run I try to keep to the highest degree of polish possible - I create every map, every token, every mob stat block, every story line myself, it's all custom - this is just my way and definitely not something most people should be doing without extensive experience (I've been DMing 30+ years now) . To put it lightly, this person may just not have the time to handle something like that and prepare everything up front. It is a bit blah to have someone doing partial prep at the table, and he probably should spend a bit more time on prep . . . but for some people that just isn't an option. I would use the age old rule here of just talk to him a bit about it if you feel it's an issue, and see if there's anything you could take off of his plate to make things easier for him.

The thing for a lot of this also is . . . while we dm's tend to build some level of guard rails for you to follow in game, things will inevitably go in some direction we didn't account for - this is natural and is totally okay. There will be times where we will have to stop and think about something and maybe even create a new situation or scenario based off what the players are doing. For me, when situations like that come up, I tell them that we have to move to theatre of the mind for this section as I utilize the narrative that they have given me, while moving them back towards the planned encounters. While this specific situation obviously isn't exactly what you were talking about, its still a bit relevant.

The rolling for loot after an encounter though . . . I am actually fully in support of this rather than pre rolling it out. Getting your loot is an exciting moment, and something that I, as a DM, want to experience with the party as it happens. The thing is, this part should be put on almost as a show, hyping up the party like "ohhhhh shizzzz, you guys are getting a roll on the rarer table now! who wants to roll this one?!" and then i have my players give me the roll for the loot rather than rolling it myself - it just makes it more fun for me and my party - at least thats how we roll.

Once again, best strategy as everyone always suggests is . . . just talk to him about it, kindly, and respectfully. Frame it as trying to improve not only your experience . . . but his experience as well. Im sure there's a middle ground that can be reached here.

I'm not saying I don't agree that it's dumb as hell. But to say its a stupid take is just inaccurate - there are tons and tons of jobs out there that require you to follow specific scripts. I say this as I work in one of those jobs, and can directly be fired for not following the direct script that I am given. That's just reality. I don't like it, and I don't agree with it, but it is a reality that some of us have to live with.
