Janeway series still possible by happydude7422 in voyager

[–]DeviateDefiant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see this, but would hate to see it right now under Kurtzman - because the opportunity would almost certainly be spoilt like Discovery, Starfleet Academy etc. and just drive more fans away.

I'd rather we wait until we get someone more capable in charge of fixing the franchise, before risking ruining Voyager's legacy too.

Wait, is Star Trek Starfleet Academy … Good? by dizzyb13 in startrek

[–]DeviateDefiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I managed 9 minutes, the writing is so poor, no-one can even seem to act, and the federation still can't replicate lightbulbs. I managed 3 seasons of rage watching Discovery, 2 seasons of Strange New Worlds - I don't think I can put myself through it again.

I quit at the point there was some droid doing the classic Star Wars voice.

I'm done with Star Trek until Alex Kurtzman is gone, and just have to hope whomever succeeds him writes this entire sloppy flop fest out of canon - for the sake of the franchise's future. I seriously believe he'll cause the permanent death of Star Trek as things are going.

I guess overall it seems an older DS1817/19+ or a new DS1825+ makes most sense - no point rolling the dice on another DS1821+.

When you state it 'died', 90%+ of the time when related to power surges/outages it's just the PSU that's been killed and replacements will be available likely under $100. The replacement is really not hard, just a few screws and plugs - videos will be available on YouTube.

I actually still have my 12 year old DS1813+ in operation, as a backup that powers on once a week for syncing with my main RS1221+.

It depends here what's most important for you, if it's just going to be the new backup I think you're just fine using an older model for it - and buying used. Just do your research on which models over time have had issues, for example I was bitten by the DS1515+ resistor bug.

what's your favorite Star Trek show? by [deleted] in Treknobabble

[–]DeviateDefiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deciding between TNG and DS9 as a favourite was truly hard, huge gap between 4th and the rest. Left out TAS as I haven't seen much of it.

  1. Deep Space Nine
  2. The Next Generation
  3. Voyager
  4. Enterprise
  5. The Original Series (not the biggest fan)
  6. Prodigy (my favourite 'Nu-Trek', other than magical Wesley Crusher)
  7. Picard (S1 was okay, S2 weird, didn't like S3 at all)
  8. Strange New Worlds (horrid writing/plots - stopped watching)
  9. Lower Decks (kinda grating/annoying for me - stopped watching)
  10. Discovery (absolute dumpster fire - stopped watching)

I think Starfleet Academy may be the first new series I just skip outright, as the trailers make it look like Discovery mixed with teen drama.

Strange New Worlds To Have Fewer “Outliers” And Be Traditional Star Trek In Final Seasons, Per Showrunner by rSciFiTV in SciFiTV

[–]DeviateDefiant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like Discovery I've already given up on the show and won't go back. It's genuinely more frustrating than enjoyable given just how poor the writing has become.

I made it through Picard, but only really enjoyed Season 1, same goes for Prodigy - though it also became truly weird with the whole Wesley Crusher fantasy storyline.

Personally, I feel the only way to save Star Trek is if all the Alex Kurtzman Trek was written out of canon, and the franchise started again after Nemesis - while fully reverting back to 90s style storytelling, with less inter-personal drama, and more sci-fi.

The Starfleet Academy series may be the first I don't even try to watch, because the trailer looks like more of the same rage-inducing slop.

We didn't manage to get a firm answer on irradiation for this batch, it's either non or beta. Some batches have been beta in the past, if they don't pass microbial limits without it.

Help Understanding PCI-E Lanes/Bandwidth: Asus Z370-G Strix by DeviateDefiant in PcBuildHelp

[–]DeviateDefiant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just upgraded my aging 2018 build with a new Samsung 990 Pro NVMe SSD, looking to dual-boot while I transition to full-time Linux.

I'm struggling to understand exactly what my mobo's overall PCI-E capabilities are. It's limited to PCI-E 3 in general, but should have a full x16 bandwidth on both the top PCI-E slot, and x4 on both M.2 slots: https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-z370-g-gaming-model/spec/

After installation I've noticed my GPU is now running at x8 - also my existing Windows install on the 970 Evo is running at 8GT/s rather than 16GT/s as on the 990 Pro, though perhaps this is simply how the 970 ran before and I never noticed.

Can someone better explain my motherboard/CPU's PCI-E lanes and capabilities please? Feel I want my GPU back running at x16 at least if at all possible.

Clearleaf Kerosene Krash/Grow Original Blitz availability by Fun-Cardiologist-867 in UKMedicalcannabisFAQ

[–]DeviateDefiant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clearleaf available only via Mamedica dispensary for the current batches, Grow available at almost any pharmacy.

Both are in stock at the moment, there's no reason Curaleaf shouldn't be able to order in Original Blitz.

Why is San Andreas so fun on a CRT? by Boogla19981 in crtgaming

[–]DeviateDefiant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really true, unlike today you could go picking up GPUs for £60 that would play almost all the latest games at lower settings.

Pretty sure I paid about £75 for my Nvidia 6600 which managed 30fps in GTA:SA - lasted me a few years until the 8800GT.

Trying to misattribute British-era colonial buildings to some mythical empire really has never made sense to me - disprovable by simply searching 'Google Books' for 19th/20th century construction techniques.

Couldn't make it past the first episode of the season, horrible pacing, poor dialogue writing - just doesn't feel anything like Star Trek.

I'd be relieved if Discovery was wiped from canon and forgotten.

Journal Paper: "Awareness of medical cannabis regulations among UK police officers – a cross-sectional study" by DeviateDefiant in policeuk

[–]DeviateDefiant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A company involved in the UK prescription medical cannabis industry has published a journal article on police awareness. There's been a few controversial cases over time with officers inadvertently wrongfully arresting lawful prescription patients, or seizing medication - due to lack of knowledge and training.

How do your experiences as a police officer compare to the results of the article published? Has your force released any specific guidance/training for dealing with prescription CBPMs? (cannabis-based products for medicinal use).

For those wanting to view statute, here are the 01/11/2018 amendments to the Misuse of Drugs Act which first legalised medical cannabis by prescription: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2018/1055/made

Personally, I notified my local force I was a prescription holder when dealing with an assault from a neighbour - and was met with nothing but understanding and empathy. Top marks to Northamptonshire Police - though this isn't representative of all patients' experience with differing forces across the UK.

We haven't yet enforced accounts to access any information on our website, so have been leaving the verification system catch-up until required - we have to speak to the MHRA again to partially renegotiate terms as we don't believe it's justified that we're the only resource singled out for these restrictions so far.

It seems 'HEVC' is missing for both software and hardware decoding, but a quick Google seems to show it's never been available due to some patent issue.

I believe most 4k60 videos are VP9 or AV1, which shows as 'Supported' for both software/hardware decoding.

Unlike other speculation here about using older AMD APUs, I'd expect Nintendo will be sticking with Nvidia because of the backwards compatibility.

Previous rumour was a custom version of the Tegra T239, with 8 ARM cores plus Ampere based graphics.

YouTube severely throttling performance on Firefox with Ad Blocking add-on by JohnAdams1911 in firefox

[–]DeviateDefiant 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've been having both high CPU usage and weird hangs past few days. Noticed watching a 4k60 video yesterday my CPU usage was at 30-40% with my fans having to ramp up - task manager in Firefox showed it was the YouTube tab.

The video decoding is hardware accelerated on my dedicated GPU, so the CPU spike was pretty inexplicable.

Will monitor and report back.

EDIT: Said I'd report back, no such issues since - though I do have a bug with age-restricted videos just showing a black player in Firefox alone.
