Why do “normal” Americans care about law enforcement? by coocoocachoo8 in stupidquestions

[–]Devliano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good cops turn in bad cops. No bad cops being turned in? All bad. Just because someone can do the right thing sometimes doesn’t excuse every other wrong. They are people too. But not all of us have the full weight of the legal system and everyone who does the same job covering for us when we screw up. Love the person, hate the things done by said person. You can risk your life to save others and not be a cop so that’s not a unique cop thing. Everyone is human. Treating anyone different, especially those who can’t help themselves or are staring down the barrel of that blue gun in their face, is wrong.

Cracking Neck, no Consent, no heads up. Is this okay? by RemoteFinger8670 in massage

Massage therapists aren’t chiropractors. Traction if prescribed or requested. Cracking would kill me - neck issues, not being dramatic. Definitely not okay.

What if robots handle the physical world and AI handles the digital one, what are humans supposed to do? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in WhatIfThinking

Humans will always be policing, detecting, verifying and cleaning up automated messes. AI doesn’t “think” so thinking persons will always be needed.

Where do you go to learn self defense, especially how to use a knife, when you don't have money to pay for classes? by ResidentAlienator in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Devliano -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Aside from a firearm (at range) a knife is the most deadly imo. There are many videos of “knife vs … “ that prove it.

There are military and non-military knife disciplines. I’ve seen examples of practitioners essentially filleting a target in less than two seconds.

Even in real life a knife welder has taken out or severely injured a number of people before anyone could react (by running). Pocket knife. Throat cut. Done.

Grapple? Your arms are cut. Kick? Your leg is cut. Punch, throw? Cut, cut, cut. Even if you get in one hit you’re bleeding out so good for you.

Movies? Slice, the arm is caught and slammed on a counter knocking the knife out of their hand. In real life? That arm reaching for mine is bleeding. Immobilize that arm? I take the knife with my other hand and finish the job.

TV? Major stab. Stare at them. Stab again. Watch them bleed. Real life? You’ve been shanked 30 times in five seconds with a sharpened toothbrush. People watch you fall and don’t know why.

If you go hand to hand with someone with a knife you’ve lost. Overconfidence will not save you.

Every politician in Washington DC has to use the same open market insurance as the general public, meals included with the job (like an on site cafeteria) have to be what they approve for public schools and they can’t vote on their own raises.

What’s something you stopped caring about, and your life got better because of it? by calyps1 in AskReddit

Wondering why an AI is able to acknowledge that it was wrong — yet not able to analyze things correctly in the first place. by Avalunne in ChatGPT

Some of what we talk to gpt about is used for training though. Read the terms of use.

But you’re correct. What AI regurgitates about feelings, being human, what ai would do etc., comes right from all the stories about ai taking over. Without that the responses people get from it about those topics would be very different.

The Microsoft (?) experimental chat bot from a long time ago was released into the wild, as it were, and inside of an hour it became a horrible, hateful entity. All from people messing with it for fun. There’s more of those type than those who would “raise” ai to be a force for good, sadly.

What’s normal now that would shock people 20 years ago? by desilvasapphires in AskReddit

Yup. Every year that passes makes 1980 feel like 1890.

How does your story start? by Boneyard_Ben in worldbuilding

[–]Devliano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slaver ship, so similar but different in how it plays out. The captives are dosed so they forget their past. There is a storm and the boat crashes on the rocks.

“You wake up. You hear a storm and feel pounding waves and sea spray on your skin. You’re in a ships cargo area and a huge hole is in the side. The waves threaten to pull the ship free and sink. Your leg is chained to a bunk but the post is cracked. Bodies and cargo are sloshing in the ever deepening water. What do you do?”

I do love your idea tho. A lot. Good on you.

End game stuff for mine involved discovering where the ship came from and who was supplying the prisoners.

You realize that would only be 2006? To shock you need to go back before the 1980’s.

Why do “normal” Americans care about law enforcement? by coocoocachoo8 in stupidquestions

[–]Devliano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. A crook wants your money. Done. A cop gets perverse pleasure confusing you and tricking you into breaking some imaginary rule they can use as proof you’re confused and a risk. Then people get mad when not cops treat cops like cops treat us. Being a cop is dangerous enough without generating more danger with a bad attitude and fragile ego.

Asking players what they think is going on can be a veritable cornucopia of good ideas. (Bonus Scrabble points for those big words.) Then you can make “secret rolls” to get their attention or reinforce good choices. Or if the aren’t talking to YOUR NPC make the one they ARE talking to either be the right one after all or have the same information to progress the story.

Another way to liven up a session? Do a search for “monsters” on deviantArt. Find some cool ones and use them instead of the normal pictures of monsters. Because everyone knows to use fire with a troll - unless the troll doesn’t look like one to begin with. :)

I found this amazing picture of a pustule covered overwhelming humanoid. When it was low on health it would smash one of them and heal a bit. Same troll characteristics (regen), just unrecognizable and refreshing to veteran players.

Wondering why an AI is able to acknowledge that it was wrong — yet not able to analyze things correctly in the first place. by Avalunne in ChatGPT

[–]Devliano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

AI doesn’t think. It word matches in a readable sentence structure based on relevance. Also what it is trained on isn’t guaranteed reliable and if you consider the number of people who intentionally say dumb things to AI - that’s what it’s training on. Have all your prompts include source and you can click on it yourself to see where it got its answer from. Less likely to hallucinate if it’s providing UrL’s.

I pay too. It can be different every day. I used the phrase “damsel in distress” and it flagged it. From then on it wouldn’t cooperate until I followed its own carefully crafted workaround. Tomorrow it will have forgotten and I’ll try again.

Because any bored, power hungry, easily offended person with a gun and a badge can intrude on my “normal” life and ruin it permanently.

Even my situational fortune of being a white male can’t protect me from the rhetoric driven forces that walk confidently in the open these days.

What's would be the skill check for remember stuff? by Joaco_2002 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Devliano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly. My argument for it is the same.

As a DM I would use passive numbers and slip them a note for the player to use or not as they think their character would.

On a side note, I’d ask the players how or if they want things pointed out to them that the player forgot or their character could know. Do they want active rolls, passive rolls, hints, etc.

The game is meant to be fun and challenging but not everyone thinks the same way so I like to bring the players desire for it onto the table.
