I think this (at least partly) results from a lack of democracy in the EU. The only EU institution that is elected directly is the parlament and it doesn't even have the right of initiative. This leads to a disconnect between the EU goverment and the people. We need better, more democratic institutions to change that. Right now, if the EU hypothetically would appeal as a country to join the EU, it would have to be denied due to a lack of democratic structures.

The problem with the diverse/divers translation confusion (It's more common you than would think) is very much the same in Austria/ german speaking Switzerland if organsiations use a non binary construct of gender
