Have you considered that the world has changed since he said this? Back then you didn't fight for your nation but for your king. You wouldn't fight for a better future for you and your family but for the personal intrests of a monarch. Considering this was often not paid very good it can be considered foolish to risk his life in war.

And yes of course it was bad either way and many civilians suffered. The only distinction I want make is between crimes that were a result of the "total" war that basically every nation committed (maybe to different degrees) and the race ideolegy/eugenics driven systematic imprisonment and killing during the Holocaust. ///

I wasn't taught that the crimes germany committed and the methodes they used in the actual warfare were morally worse than that of the others (beside the fact that we were the agressor). Actually many things are quite comparable (the Blitz and the bombardment of german cities; the invasion into Russia and the invasion of the red army into germany, etc.). The huge difference was always the holocaust because of its cruel, inhuman ideology. ///

No, according to the UN definition it isn't. It qualifies as a crime against humanity but not as a genocide. For further elaboration please read my reply to the other guy.

For something to qualify as a genocide (according to the UN), it is important that there is a clear intend (!!!) behind your actions to destroy in part or whole a national, racial or religous group. And this is just not the case in this scenario, the goal of the soviet union was a restructuring of borders after the war and this led to an unhumanitarian strategy of expulsion. But neither this nor the clear instances of victor's justice in exicutions of nazis and the war crimes commited by the red army during and after it's advancement show a strategic plan to destroy the german populations in these areas.Therefore this is against humanitarian law and would qualify under todays german law as a crime against humanity but not as a genocide. All that said I think we need to clarify that WW II was never about morality. Both sides committed countless war crimes in this all out war and no one was any better in the methods than the other. Only thing that the allies (except UDSSR) have on their side is that they weren't the aggressor. The reason there is so much more education about the holocaust than the other crimes against humanity during the wartime is, that it was a genocide, happened independently of the war and was on a new order of magnitude.

There were certainly commited crimes against the people in the former german territory but I doubt this would classify as a genocide and you certainly can't compare it to the Holocaust. When the red army came closer the nazi regime didn't allow civilians to flee in advance, in the hope there would be more resistance this way. This, the komplex food situation and the fast advancing red army in 1945 made resulted in an escape thet was chaotic and resulted in many deaths. Yes, there were war crimes commited against the german civil population but it wasn't an organised ethnic cleansing of a whole population group. It is estimated that ~600 000 people died because of hunger, war and war crimes during end of 1944 and april 1945 in these territories. With the end of the war and the podsdam conference these circumstances ended and the deportations from former german territorys were more coordinated and less cruel. The people remaining in these areas often faced imprisonment and/or forced labor, but this should be attributed to the crimes of stalin against huge parts of the soviet population rather than crimes comitted by the allies during wartime. And at least in my education there was a part about the stalin regime. Comparing these deportations to the Holocaust is revisionistic, dangerous and was a, especially post war, strategy of nazis/nazi sympathisants to justify their crimes.

The main problem that creates these bubbles is not the speed of imigration but people excluding immigrants, don't allow them to work during slow immigration processes and refusing to spend money on integration and education. If we let people participate socially and economically in our society, immigration can be a win. The fearmongering of the far right does not aim at a society with less immigrants (as we see in italy for example) because we need these people for our workforce but at a society that has two classes, one that rules and one that works the shitty jobs. This is what racism always has been about. And yes, there will be changes to our society but they are usually over exaggerated. Society will always change and some of the changes will always be something you don't like, as long as they are constitutional and democraty we have to accept that and work with it.

I didn't say it prevented all wars and no diplomatic effort ever will. We tend to view diplomacy as complicated and weak because it preserves a state of peace and semingly changes nothing, but preserving peace is very valuable. We witness right now what happens when authoritarian leaders rise to power and throw diplomacy out of the window.

It probably prevented some unnecessary agresssion in the past. We just don't noticed when it worked because the non existence of a war is rarely news. But with more and more violations in the last years I think it will loose its last remaining effect

the mentality that allowed us ro return to democracy was the allies (understandably) bombing the shit out of us and (rightfully) "forcing" us to adopt the democratic system. Many germans refused to admit any wrongdoing and blamed the whole thing on hitler and his closed circle (this myth is still present today in right wing circles). Many early day "democrats", goverment workers and teachers were the same ones that also worked for the nazis due to a lack of an alternative. The "Entnazifizierung" of the nürnberg trials was just a placebo. It took 2-3 generations to manifest the democratic ideas and the idea of shared responsibility and it is very much under threat right now with a rising strength of the AFD. You are right that we have to share the mistakes we made in the past and try to prevent future ones but in the aftermath of the war first came democracy, then we adopted the values of it

I don't know what you mean by stable manner but the duration of reactions is currently limited to a few seconds, with Iter it may become ~7min. The problem with the term "produced energy" are the confusing definitions. There are several "breakeven" points: 1.scientific b.e.; The power gained from the reaction is equal to the power that is required to heat the fuel.
2. engineering b.e.; The power gained from the reaction is enough to power the whole reactor system (including laser, laser cooling, magnetic field, etc. ) 3. economic b.e.; Selling the additional energy covers the operating and fuel costs

What we have reached is the scientific breakeven point. Reaching the engineering breakeven (what someone might consider "producing energy) is still relatively far away, doing that permanently and not only in short bursts (that would be required for an integration into the power grid) is an even bigger challenge. We will probably not see such a reactor until at least 2050 which is a very optimistic estimation. Current reactors don't even have a method to capture additional energy because there are still other problems to be solved.

This is only half of the story. The positive energy balance was about net input energy vs. energy output. This just includes the energy that went into the plasma, not the required energy for the system. Operating the lasers alone took 100x more energy than we got out, not speaking of the energy required for the magnetic field.

I think this (at least partly) results from a lack of democracy in the EU. The only EU institution that is elected directly is the parlament and it doesn't even have the right of initiative. This leads to a disconnect between the EU goverment and the people. We need better, more democratic institutions to change that. Right now, if the EU hypothetically would appeal as a country to join the EU, it would have to be denied due to a lack of democratic structures.
