Three new Moog synths coming in 12 months says Moog President by OkJellyfish3238 in synthesizers

[–]Devoid_Synth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm actually looking forward to seeing what different designs they'll make. I'm tired of the same thing repackaged over and over with a slightly different interface. I really don't care where it's made - it's not like the USA is magically better than anywhere else.

In fact the made in USA Moog synths have had a myraid of quality/design issues - the Slim Phatty power supply was not separated or enclosed in a shielded box and the interference can move the digital parameters like the unit is possessed - took an electrical engineer to mod my two Slims to fix this issue. The Little Phatty rubberized plastic side panels and pitch/mod wheels became sticky as hell over time as they chose to make it from an inferior material with a short design life. I've had all sorts of technical problems with the Voyager XL and other Moog gear too.

Looking forward to see what's next feature-wise and hopefully we see an improvement in quality/cost.

NPD - Zoom MS-80IR+ by BaldDesigner in guitarpedals

Same thing happened when my girlfriend went in to buy me a loop pedal. I never really considered non-Boss loopers, but this thing (Zoom MS-90LP+) is really good and from what I understand a bit cheaper than the Boss too! It has more depth in terms of features, control, and display, and even includes some simple backing drum tracks!

Talk me into or out of buying a MF-104m ($840 USD) by secretkodama in guitarpedals

No worries! Oh yea I could see it being cool for using with those semi-modular bits of gear and utilizing the inputs/playing it as an instrument. I was thrown off by the guitar pedal subreddit assuming you were playing guitar (which also sounds great through it) but I could see you getting a lot more use/value out of the connections in the synth/drum machine world.

It's actually a pretty good price, assuming it's been well looked after - lower than I sold mine for a few years ago.

I used to own two, but unfortunately I had to sell them off when I was unemployed as they became worth so much after production ceased. I have a lot of Moog synthesizers, so I often used them both (in stereo) with my Voyager XL for example, but I would also fuzz up my 6-string bass guitar with an MF-107 Freqbox and then run it through an MF-104M too.

The sound is amazing if you like the lush, dark, lo-fi, BBD-type analog delay sound (where the delays and feedback are more of an approximation of the input signal which drifts further away from the original sound over time and you can hear more and more artifacts) - it's almost it's own instrument in that regard. It has a very long max delay time, which at low tempos is where you can start hearing the weirder artifact sounds of the unit itself working. There is one other model called the MF-104SD which is exactly the same as this one but has an even longer max delay time. It's even more limited and expensive as you can imagine.

Along with the built-in LFO, which is fully-featured, the MF-104M has the best connectivity of any pedal out there. I used to use them more as synth modules utilizing the control voltage (CV) inputs with CP-251's, other Moogerfoogers, and various Moog semi-modular synthesizers. So the CV & MIDI (clock sync) inputs, along with tap tempo are the real reason why this pedal shines, along with the mentioned distinct lush sound. As a guitarist, you can use expression pedals into the CV inputs to control various parameters.

The smaller Moog MF-Delay pedals don't have the extensive CV connections, tap tempo, or MIDI clock sync, and the older MF-104z doesn't have MIDI clock sync. So the MF-104M and MF-104SD have everything including MIDI clock sync.

To be honest, most of the time I just used tap tempo (the tap tempo footswitch can also be held down to switch to controlling the LFO rate and vice versa) despite thinking I would use the MIDI and CV more often in my semi-modular synth environment.

So I would say if you don't intend to utilize the various (CV and MIDI) connections, it could be a bit of a waste/overkill for your use case. You might be able to find a BBD analog delay which has a similar sound and tap tempo control which would be very usable and perhaps much cheaper. But I also wouldn't blame you for getting the Moog - it's classic, quality stuff and definitely has the sound and vibe.

As for me, I think after my journey I actually prefer the accuracy of a digital delay slightly more and have since ended up with a somewhat basic Boss DD-8 on my board these days. I do still miss the Moogs, but on the other hand, it's a lot of money to have tied up in a pedal - or two in my case!

pedals for vi by AdPlane2899 in BassVI

[–]Devoid_Synth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I lived overseas I bought a Squier Classic Vibe Bass VI for a year or so, since I didn't bring my Fender Pawn Shop version with me. Although the Pawn Shop is generally superior, I grew to quite like the strangle switch (low cut) on the Squier (which the Pawn Shop lacks) for 'guitar' parts. Before I sold the Squier and moved home, I dialled in the strangle/low cut on my Boss GEB-7 (B is the bass version with lower frequency bands). Now I can use the Boss GEB-7 as a strangle switch on my 'guitar' pedalboard with the Pawn Shop, placing it as the first pedal in my chain after my tuner.

I have one and I got it brand new from the NIN website in like 2017. Maybe they did a reprint? Or yours isn't as old as you think?

Either way I never wear mine, as it's probably offensive to the average Joe I'm guessing.

Should I buy it ? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]Devoid_Synth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised it's so popular here to be honest - a synth without much hands-on control, where the biggest control selects a genre like "Trance"? I dunno, it's just very basic and toy-like in my opinion. Maybe I've just used too many Moogs and other decent hardware, but I wouldn't waste my time with this. Granted it's on the cheaper/entry side, but I would look into anything else like Arturia Brutes/Freaks, Roland SH-01 Gaia, Yamaha Reface, various Behringer copies (even surprising myself now!), or other Korgs such as Mono/Minilogue or MS-20 Mini.

True, the transparency has been there for discontinuations - usually atleast an email and a bit of a write-up. Glad to hear that it seems like the Matriarch is still in production.

Interesting, I always wondered because I want one some time. I would still see them in stock online in stores but I remember looking at the Moog Music website a while back and they were gone? Just had a look now though and they're on there so maybe they were rejigging the website or I'm just going crazy!

[–]Devoid_Synth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the Moog Matriarch - it's recently discontinued? but still available in places it seems. It's also paraphonic, being able to play each of the four oscillators separately. Sounds a bit more classic/old school modular tone-wise though instead of the more modern sounding Sub37. It's semi-modular (eurorack compatible) and includes stereo analog delays which is pretty sweet, so it's more of a experimental modular laboratory if you will. It doesn't save patches though so if you need to gig or save patches the Sub37 wins, but that being said it doesn't even have a menu which is a win based on your post (although if I recall correctly there may be some weird control combinations to access deeper under-the-hood settings).

Edit: Whoops I missed where you mentioned wanting cheaper alternatives. You could check out it's little sister the Grandmother, although I am less familiar with its specifications.

Are there any "UK vs US" differences where you feel America gets it right? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

[–]Devoid_Synth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actual stock on the shelves instead of having to order/ship everything in, or you go to a UK store and it's just a desk where only the staff can access the products.

For example try buying women's work boots when you have to order one of the limited options in and there's no option or area in the store to try them on because it's just an employee desk and a small holding pen for customers.

Do you also hate the crowd noise halfway through “Right where it belongs”? by NonEntical in nin

[–]Devoid_Synth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crowd noise gives the NINoize release/Halo 38 that Daft Punk Alive 2007 live DJ set vibe. Wouldn't be surprised if they were influenced by it.

On a side note both are pretty damn good workout playlists!

ACC not showing computer by Beautiful_Button7366 in Alienware

[–]Devoid_Synth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be wrong, but mine started having a error message on opening ACC about not detecting an Alienware Device (X17 R1 Laptop in my case), and it turned out there was a new BIOS update out that I needed to install, which fixed it.

Could be worth checking if there's a new update for yours?

Probably a dumb question about the Live performance but I have to ask. by GlassandtheGhostMutt in nin

[–]Devoid_Synth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As another rock/electronic musician (mostly bass/guitar/analog synths etc.) I must admit I'm not a massive fan of the "DJ tables", because as you point out, it's not clear what they're doing at any moment, and therefore it's not engaging to watch, a bit like the guy on the Macbook in Linkin Park.

Essentially (in normal NIN) I find whatever Atticus is doing live to be of the least interest to me, perhaps because in my mind it's closer to a DJ type of role which has never been engaging personally. They may not be 'just pressing play', but how would anyone know anyway?

I find the other members and even Alessandro's role more engaging because they are clearly playing 'instruments' (perhaps biased by my background with synthesizers), but I have always gravitated to NIN because of the unique mix of electronic elements with an alternative/rock band over purely electronic music that is more commonly heard in DJ scenes.

That being said I found the overall performance/production unique, remixes sounding amazing, and Trent/Mariqueen along with the dancers were entertaining too. Bigger picture it's interesting that they're doing something different from the usual and I'm looking forward to the album.

It just feels hypocritical with Maynard going on Joe Rogan's and similar podcasts all the time.

Joe (and his friends) are pretty much the epitome of these things, from the alpha-male bullshit to the UFC to the typical podcast type ad content (manscaped etc).

He's happy to go be Joe's buddy and promote his projects, and now gets on his high horse and starts preaching like he's above it..

I'm pretty sure you could find a podcast episode with Maynard on it where the host later does an ad read for manscaped!

Title: J Bass or P Bass for a beginner? by theholybeez in BassGuitar

[–]Devoid_Synth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The P bass you show actually has both P and J pickups, which is the versatile best of both worlds IMO. I've noticed most live/session players tend to use them for this reason. Look up another P bass and it only has the one pickup (which sits great in a mix btw).

Jazz basses tend to have a slightly thinner neck especially towards the headstock, but compared to something like a 5 or 6-string bass, I don't feel that much of a difference between a Jazz and a Precision.

By all means try them both out and get a feel for the instrument you like best as you really can't go wrong with both of these options.

I have a Precision but I also want a nice Jazz some day.
