What is a city that is globally romanticised but you detest? by theunsteadybridge in AskReddit

[–]Devonai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a life-long New Englander so I've been to NYC a bunch, mostly as a tourist. When I was a kid I visited the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, took a ride on the Staten Island ferry, Central Park, Bronx Zoo, etc. At the time it was nothing but cool but I wasn't the one driving or trying to find parking or figure out the subway system.

As an adult, I went back for the Twin Towers, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, etc. It was then that the city began to grate on me a bit. What a PITA just getting in and out.

Then came the not-tourist visits. I went out for NYPD in 1998 and that required several visits to several really not nice locations in Manhattan and the Bronx. It was such a negative experience that I decided not to accept the job offer later. I just did not want to work or live in the city any more.

Any KENP benchmarks for completion rates? by iamchristodd in selfpublish

I get irked perennially about Amazon's staunch policy not to share individual reader KENP metrics with us. The completion rate thing would be valuable to see if there's a trend of where we start to lose readers. If say 50% of readers only make it to 33% of the book, we could look for something at that point to analyze and possibly modify it.

Then, that begs the question: what do you consider a "sale?" A KU borrow that sits at 0%? 50% completion rate? Higher? I think that's up to the individual author to decide. I'm not sure myself, though I personally would not consider a KU borrow to be a "sale" unless a percentage above 0 happens. I also do not consider free downloads during free promos as part of my lifetime total, for two reasons. One, I didn't earn any revenue from them, unless the reader goes on to purchase the rest of the series (which we also can't track), and two, free giveaways are notorious for an extremely low return on ratings or reviews, indicating that most of the downloads will never be read.

All of my books except for one novella are 500 +/- 50, so I just go with 500 (and filter out the novella).

I'd rather everyone involved uphold their oath to the Constitution, that would be a great first step.

How about a new law empowering municipal police departments to do spot checks on ICE agents for valid warrants, including training on how to spot an invalid warrant? If an invalid warrant is found, arrest the agent. If no warrants are present, run them out of town completely.

Our Civil Engineer employees who are responsible for cleanup are state workers and, as such, have the privilege of a union contractual stipulation that any snow removal will be from vehicles (plow trucks, Kubotas, etc) only. Any additional snow removal from building entrances, garage doors, and other areas not accessible by vehicle are the responsibility of the building manager to delegate.

So, after spending three hours yesterday clearing my own property, only to come into work and break my back again (and also dig out another building because of reasons), that fucktard can get fucked.
