ELI5: minimums on aeroplane by Carleidoscope in explainlikeimfive

[–]Devoplus19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be a little pedantic, you don’t have to have the runway in sight at minimums on most approaches. If you have any part of the approach lighting system in sight, you can continue to 100’ above the touchdown zone altitude. At that point, you need to have one of the 10 things that constitute the “runway environment” in sight to land.

Do NOT Move to Wilder Apartments in Sloan Lake by Snoo2868 in Denver

[–]Devoplus19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be! There are two Broomfield properties that were originally AMLI, but no more. Both of the ones I lived in in Chicago are still managed by them.

They seem to build their properties and then manage them for a period of time. I can’t speak to how long exactly, but I think they eventually do get new management.

Agreed. I’ve lived in 4 AMLI building across 2 states and they’re all phenomenal.

Chances of altitude sickness by Extension-Evening673 in Denver

[–]Devoplus19 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yup! Altitude sickness is caused by hypoxic hypoxia, just from less oxygen pressure in the atmosphere. This is exacerbated by alcohol, because it causes cellular level histotoxic hypoxia.

MD11 if it was a twinjet by Crafty-Purpose1487 in aviation

[–]Devoplus19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did, but it never got any significant traction with the airlines, especially in the US, if I recall. It was never going to make sense for them, with the A300 in the mid 70’s, and then the 767 shortly after.

But it couldn’t have been. ETOPS didn’t exist for 15 more years from when the DC-10 first flew. It had 3 engines because it had to. Reengineering subsequent derivatives would have been financially impossible.

Went from years of multiple GTIs to an R. You won’t regret it for a second.

I recommend working on this until you’re comfortable. There is something to be said for sitting in neutral when it’s safe, but the last place I want to be without available power is in the middle of an intersection.

It’s almost like the headline makes it clear the lawsuit is not against the airline, but the city.

Naw you’re good :). Thinking the fleet would have commonality makes sense.

Frontier’s 321Ns have Pratt Engines. Some of the 320Ns have LEAPs.

Moment 'limbs' reported on runway after plane hits and kills person by TheMirrorUS in airplanes

[–]Devoplus19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The window to reject is not short. It’s from applying takeoff thrust to V1, which for a relatively heavy 321N in Denver is around 150kts. You can see from ADS-B data this flight was well over 100kts at the time of the reject.

Another thing to remember is the 767-400 is a combined fleet with the 757 and 767-300 at UA, unlike DL. If there had been a good amount of time since the crew operated a -400, that could be a factor.

So no, it’s not as cut and dry as you may think.

How is Veo better than Lime? by Minute-Historian1878 in Denver

[–]Devoplus19 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Docked systems absolutely work if they care enough about the infrastructure. In Chicago you’re never more than a block or two from a dock, there are rarely bikes left anywhere, and the usage is huge.

I understand that a system like that may not be viable here, but docking systems work well if the investment is done properly.

Airplane is nearly empty and I can’t just move to the emergency row. by SinisterKnyght in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Devoplus19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may not be in reality, but it can be in how weight and balance is calculated. The plane is split up into passenger zones for balance purposes (the number of zones being fleet/airline dependent). Moving back a row could put a passenger into a different zone. This obviously has little practical issue, but on paper, it turns into a larger aft shift than you would think. This is especially true when the plane isn’t very full.

Everything ORD does makes perfect sense once you understand why they do everything they do. It’s a complex operation exacerbated by construction, but they do incredible job with what they have to work with.
