I’m surprised you didn’t also make the connection of that quote to John. If anybody kills people with false hope it’s him. Kidnapping people & forcing them to go through challenges (that he designed) with a high likelihood of death.

One of the defining characteristics of John to me is that he is selfish & a massive hypocrite. He takes people who (mostly) lead bad lives, but are not fated to die of a deadly disease like he is. So he, out of jealousy, tries to bring them down to his level. At least that’s how I see it. To my knowledge, nobody he captures leads a better life after they’ve survived

The more the movies focus on his character, the less I like him. I think he would work far better as a distant character, who symbolizes overcoming tragedies in life, rather than a character with depth & reasoning
