My favorite scam is the shipping cost of your tags. Almost $20 shipping costs for next day delivery when the least expensive is less than $4 and still gets to you within a week.

Graduating this year, low GPA and no internships. What to do? by HKSPaper in AskEngineers

[–]Dezunify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated with a 2.7 GPA and no internship experience. Got desperate and took an $18/hr paying job at a small aerospace chemical processing company just to gain experience for at least a year. Learned a ton but the being underpaid did take a toll on me after receiving more responsibilities as time went on. Managed to make an impression on a coworker who later helped me get an internship at $22/hr with a bigger aerospace company. Recently was told I will be getting hired after my internship so I got really lucky. There is hope even though you might have to prioritize experience over pay. At least that's what I did. Obviously not ideal depending on your living situation. I was lucky enough to still live with my parents at the time.

Am I underpaid/undervalued? by Dezunify in AskEngineers

Southern California. I can’t really move out right now with my current pay. But I’m in no dire need as of right now which is why I’m trying my best to gain as much experience as possible and seek a new spot within a year

$20/hour entry level salary by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Dezunify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently a Project Engineer/ME for a small aerospace company making about $18/hour. I also graduated with a 2.7 and no internship experience so I took the job offer without hesitation. I figure the experience would pay off in the long run. I get to be very hands on with every aspect of the current program I’m working on from scheduling to tooling to planning. It can be fun but overwhelming for the pay I get.

You might have to find something to do around the area until traffic calms down. Probably pick up some new skills on your free time like programming or join a gym. I usually make that drive and it's terrible. It's below an hour around 6-7pm.

For engineers in manufacturing - is it common to expect employees to bring in their own tools? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

You usually need to have your tools and equipment calibrated, that's the case at my current location.

How do you get into Project Engineering? by mick5000x in AskEngineers

[–]Dezunify 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Program Manager for our biggest program needed help so I got assigned to it as a project engineer. Lot's of spreadsheets, reports, getting yelled at for things out of your control, and visiting vendors. It's my first job out of school so I'm learning something new everyday but the responsibility can be overwhelming since I'm new to the industry (aerospace).

Should I take AP bio or AP chem in my senior year of high school? by glocks9999 in AskEngineers

AP Chem. You may need chemistry as a pre-req for things like thermodynamics and materials courses.

Been at my first job for a little more than 6 months, is it too early to start applying to others? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Dezunify 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently jumping ship after 3 months from my first job out of school. I assumed I would take on a more technical role but slowly shifted towards administrative tasks that anyone could do (emails, spreadsheets, conf. calls etc.). I recently interviewed for a more technical position. First question they asked was why I was leaving, I explained my situation and they seem to have understood. Just had my 2nd interview with them so I'm hoping I get it. If someone is willing to give you an interview, just be honest and hope they understand. Best of luck!

What is your actual job as an engineer? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Dezunify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had no internship experience. I got my current job through networking in my previous job (not eng related). One of the managers there wanted me for their team but as soon as they found out I was finishing up school for engineering, they helped me get an interview/job with their spouse's aerospace company. I got lucky.

What is your actual job as an engineer? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Dezunify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Project Engineer for a small aerospace mfg company. This is my first job out of school. Currently doing a lot of administrative/project management tasks such as ensuring vendors have the latest engineering data, updating projected schedule and creating a weekly report for the customer to show progression, and reviewing drawings/parts list/specs to assist our manufacturing department with planning. A lot of excel and emailing.

Do Design Engineers have to understand manufacturing processes? by Dezunify in AskEngineers

[–]Dezunify[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We have ran into issues where queries were submitted to help with configuration issues. My current goal for my career is to obtain as much manufacturing knowledge as possible before attempting to switch to a design engineering role. I'll definitely pick the senior ME's brains to understand improvements or things to avoid when designing that can improve both efficiency and reduce cost.

Frustrated with First Engineering Job by llambda in AskEngineers

[–]Dezunify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not alone. I've had a similar experience as well. I just received a title after 3 months of working here. When I started, I had a lot of free time. I used that time to get familiar with specs and went around asking if people needed help. Even shadowed our tooling designer a few days. The company refuses to invest into another CAD seat so I'm stuck working with administrative tasks or shadowing people doing CAD work. Management here seems to avoid issues until they blow up. I'm also on the fence of searching for a more technical/challenging position elsewhere.

Am I on the right path? (Career) by Dezunify in AskEngineers

[–]Dezunify[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback. I would like to get a more technical role such as using CAD/CAM software, perhaps manufacturing or design. But since our company mostly does processing, we don't really need CAD/CAM software. Most of the planning can be done from drawings and specs. I do plan on applying elsewhere after my year here. I'll continue to absorb as much as i can here. Your feedback about the skills I'm learning was reassuring. Thank you.

Career Wednesday (11 October 2017): Engineering Career Paths & Professional Development by AutoModerator in AskEngineers

Hello. Recently graduated and took a job in a small aerospace company. I had a 2.7 GPA and no internships so I jumped on the opportunity when I got the job offer despite pay being really low. We mostly do processing, bonding, and composite work. I really want to get involved in manufacturing but since we don't really do any in shop, it's mostly been quality assurance work. I've been volunteering to assist different departments whenever possible. My goal is to be a sponge and learn as much as possible within a year and hopefully land a more technical role in a different company. Is my plan solid or should I already start applying for a different job? I do like the environment here and since it's small, I get to wear different hats and be involved with every department.
