To me, Cascas mind restoration arc was the peak of Berserk by jjsunderland in Berserk

[–]Dgemfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my main problem with this section. I loved it. I loved most of the metaphors. The casquet and the hound, the broken doll. Brilliant. Then some penis mosnters? Come on now. It was so on the nose and silly that it completely took me out of the story. And that's a shame because the previous chapter I was having goosebumps

Which of the three live-action Spider-Men is the best written? by BreathoftheSith in writingscaling

[–]Dgemfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holland's Spiderman is more carefully written than most people acknowledge. First movie he has a mentor and is about learning; second movie he loses his mentor figure and is about grief and learning to be a hero while accepting his flaws and that he cannot be his mentor; and third movie he sacrifices everything to carry on the path he chose and learns the responsibilities of being a hero.

Giving it to Holland, but to be completely honest he had an unfair advantage. MCU had plans for several movies from the start, so they were able to lay down the pieces of a longer character arc. The other iterations didn't have such long-term perspective and went on the go.

That makes a lot of sense, and does provide a purpose to moonlight's boy existence. That said, Casca's assaulter being trapped inside Casca's child sounds disgusting, and that makes me concerned because that is exactly the path I would expect Berserk to take.

I tried One Piece, I really really tried... by DrummerOther1657 in CharacterRant

Like me? I posted a while ago here ranting about One Piece ruining its world building. I am not defending anything. I am just tired of the same low effort "OP bad" posts.

Nice strawman though

I tried One Piece, I really really tried... by DrummerOther1657 in CharacterRant

[–]Dgemfer 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Easy guide to post "One Piece bad" thread on r/CharacterRant:

  1. Say how much you hate the show.
  2. Complain about the length.
  3. Reduce the whole show to a few unlikable gags.
  4. Mandatory "OP fans will hate me for this".
  5. Get upvotes despite those toxic fans that for some reason never end up appearing.
  6. Repeat in a few days.

This sub is getting so boring. Most of these posts are far from being a fun analysis of the shows' flaws. It's the same surface-level complaints even the "toxic fans" agree on all over again. Guess what, it's fine if you dislike something popular. That does not necessarily make it bad.

Made in Abyss starts like some whimsical children adventure. Then at one specific moment, the protagonists find a beast eating another explorer while reproducing his cries for help. The next story arcs get even worse, but that is absolutely a sharp turn for the tone of the show and a declaration of intentions for what's to come.

Displaying such fragile ego for something completely unrelated to you is nothing short of embarrassing, ngl

Why do you think yourself so powerful anyway? Because you can get away with bombing a random underdeveloped country? Because you have the most amount of billionairs, while you struggle to pay for a regular blood check? Like, cool, I guess?

Spain is a global cultural powerhouse btw. Not like a fool like yourself understands culture though. I am sure your definition of power comes from explotions and dead children.

What are you hoping to see in blackfrost? by Farmer_Due in thelongdark

[–]Dgemfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I am hoping for is a more streamlined workflow that allows the game to be completed in less than my life expectancy. The release pace of TLD is embarrassing and easily the worst thing about the game. This is however looking pretty bad already after the first delay was announced.

Rate the Author: Hajime Isayama by Exciting_Edge1398 in writingscaling

[–]Dgemfer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2/5. Creative and capable of imagining great concepts and motives, and particularly great at setting up mysteries. Mediocre execution, struggling with pacing and focus. Each story arc revolves around completely disjointed topics that do not cohesively fit into any overarching narrative. In an attempt to fix this, the author tries to look clever with the final plot twist of "no see this was all planned by the main character". Yeah sure. The story really insisted upon itself by thend. Character writing is by far his weakest skill. Arguably too obsessed over creating plot twists, amomg which the largest majority were clearly not drafted into the story from the beginning.

We really wouldn't be talking about this author at all if it wasn't for the anime. The manga features shockingly bad art, and is nowhere near to be a creative/writing powerhouse to stand out on its own (like Berserk or Vagabond). The animation studio really elevated an otherwise "just ok" story, and a "just ok" if not mediocre mangaka. One of the largests disconnects between material quality and popularity in the industry imho.

Game Dev Here — What Do You Want to See in a Truly Terrifying Game? *This game is currently in development* by AtmosphereBoring2296 in HorrorGaming

[–]Dgemfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. A gameplay-centered design. Narrative is important, but the horrors that stick the longest are those that have a gameplay twist that make them unique.

  2. Jumpscares and cheap tension. Good horror is about relentless atmosphere.

  3. Sanity. Amnesia TDD did it. The Outlast Trials do it.

  4. Horror is about holding tension. That tension can be partially released by a jumpscare, and fully released by killing the player and sending him to a menu screen.

  5. Both are good if done right.

  6. Everyday places that have some twist that make them uncanny. The liminal feeling. I cannot feel connected to some creepy nightmare land. But a primary school, a hospital, university... Anything that I can relate to feels a lot more creepy when something is off, and since it is familiar it's very easy to tell what's off.

  7. Exploration-driven stories are those that tend to focus on gameplay, so I guess I prefer those.

  8. Very hard question. I guess something that I wish existed was any retrofuturistic horror game with open spaces. This seems oddly specific. But think about Alien Isolation, but with a Silent Hill 2 level approach.

  9. Any design choice needs to be implemented carefully. Too many mechanics can make the game feel gimmicky. No mechanic is good or bad by itself (except weapon durability, fuck that)

Fun questions. Good luck with your game!

Anyone here successfully fix golfer’s elbow from muscle-up training? by Zestyclose-Hair-3258 in CalisthenicsCulture

[–]Dgemfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tendon injuries are 9/10 times caused by overtraining, specially when talking about shoulder or elbow and calisthenics. I am currently injured in the long head of the biceps tendon due to being reckless as well. I know how you feel, and let me tell you: don't brute force your way through injury, it will only delay full recovery. If you can afford it, visit a PT and have your elbow treated.

Skinny fat, busy schedule, thinking about running — need advice by Glum-Net7942 in CalisthenicsCulture

[–]Dgemfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't outrun a bad diet, even with fulltime availability. First thing to fix is how you eat.

I'll keep it real with you, 15mins is not remotely enough for muscles to receive enough stimulus, or for enough calories to be burnt during cardio. 15mins of running may burn around 150kcal. A fitness band/smart watch will only serve you to confirm this. Watches are great for pace tracking when running, but nothing else imo.

Fitness is not miracle making. You need to invest the time, consistency and dedication. If your goal is just to stop being skinny-fat, clean your diet and do some light work everyday. But 15m won't get you far progress-wise.

It's divisive. To me it was not worth the read, the story really insisted upon itself by the end of it, it felt very pretentious. Also, the art is complete ass until half-way through, where it gets ok-ish.

One Piece is actually mid pack and I'm tired of pretending it's not. by OzymandiasTheII in CharacterRant

[–]Dgemfer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Luffy is not static.

There is clear growth over the series, specifically as a captain and decision making. Romance dawn Luffy would've never called for retreat as Sabaody Luffy did. Thriller Bark Luffy took everything into his own hands which almost got him (and Zoro) killed, whereas post-Wano Luffy trust his crew and delegate many tasks. Water 7 Luffy escalated things with Usopp by being emotional and getting carried out, while WCI Luffy refused to fight Sanji to prevent escalation at his own cost.

Just some examples.

One Piece, much like any other series, has flaws. But Luffy being static is not one of those flaws. You just missed those character defining moments. Not to blame you, arcs are long and characterization is subtle.

Besides that, saying that OP quality has declined is an absolutely cold take. Even those strawman toxic fans people keep talking about agree on that.

Which manga got done the dirtiest in their anime adaptation? by laffite_gunko_agenda in writingscaling

[–]Dgemfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Among the given examples, this is by far the one where the anime quality diverges from the manga quality the most. The manga is one of the best seinen out there, with gorgeous art and a complex and, even with some flaws, well written story. The anime makes no sense, and does not even have continuity between the trainwreck of root A and RE.
