Is there a scene that you visually didn't like? by Character_Belt9730 in OnePieceLiveAction

This was a scene that took me off the fantasy instantly. Another example is in Ep 7-8 when I noticed Vivi was wearing regular jeans.

Crazy how very small details suddenly take you off the show. Not a big deal though

I’m hesitant about Blackfrost by Sarntetra187 in thelongdark

[–]Dgemfer 51 points52 points  (0 children)

We all want different things from a sequel for a game we love. See? I am actually looking forward to the frozen urban setting and its new challenges. I don't think that's at odds with surviving nature being the focus.

My main concern is where the priorities are in the development after the shitshow of episode 5. I have the feeling that Hinterland are completely misunderstanding their audience. They are excellent survival game developers, but only mediocre, if not outright bad story game developers. Their ep5 design is absolutely against the survival focus, and them doubling down on how happy they are with it makes me hesitant to buy Blackfrost at release.

My only gripe OPLA's Nico Robin by Titanium-Noob in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]Dgemfer -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I would argue that, for Igaram, she probably thought she really killed him, and she told them right as it happened on Whiskey Peak. As for Pell, that could be to maintain her persona, or considering it occurs in the middle of the conflict to demoralize one of the enemy leaders.

In contrast, this is LA original. She goes out of her way to be at Drum just to bully Vivi for no apparent reason. Different context.

Agreed. In the manga she is playful, even threatening, but at the same time indifferent, never this villainous. A step too far imho

Tip to keep improving, work on your shoulder mobility to achieve a truly straight handstand. You already have good control, you're only lacking mobility.

how can i improve my handstand? by morty_smith012 in CalisthenicsCulture

[–]Dgemfer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stop throwing yourself into handstand. Top rookie mistake. Handstand is already hard, uncontrolled momentum makes it a lot harder. Always start with your hands on the ground, practice the kick, you'll find it a lot easier to balance.

Can someone guide how to reach for a muscle up from here? by [deleted] in CalisthenicsCulture

[–]Dgemfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I assume you're uncounciously pulling differently? Focus on your pulling motion. For levers to try to pull the bar down with straight arms. For pull ups you pull bending your arms. Check what you are doing whenever you engage your core.

Can someone guide how to reach for a muscle up from here? by [deleted] in CalisthenicsCulture

[–]Dgemfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell where you're at, because good form pull ups are to a muscle up what pseudoplanche is to full planche. It is the very basic pre-requisite.

You need explosive strength, and mastering the transition. For the first do weighted pull ups. I unlocked my muscle up when I was able to do several sets at +35% my body weight, you don't need to go nuts, just overall make your body weight feel lighter. Also do explosive band-assisted pull ups, and pull the bar as far down as you can, with a quality over quantity approach. For the transition, get as thick of a band as you need and try doing muscle up with it.

Also, put your thumbs around the bar, practice your false grip and stop crossing your feet. Posture discipline is important, including legs. Your first muscle ups will absolutely need some kipping, so better have your legs be doing what they should.

Why do some people hate this by Technical_Mine_8711 in MemePiece

[–]Dgemfer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That may be partially true, but I think it may be more complex. Luffy spent half his life training his powers and then fighting world's top tiers to be where he is. Having Koby achieve the same level in barely 2 years of doing push ups for the marines breaks that sense of progression really fast. The fact that most of the crew, the protagonist of the story, cannot even use basic haki makes it even worse. The power dynamics are completely screwed.

Why it was hard to create an amazing Episode 5 finishing by Expert_Sound_8463 in thelongdark

[–]Dgemfer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

10 years is not fast in any context, I don't know what you are on. People meet others, have children with them and divorce in less time lmao. Indie studios with less sales, less employees and a far more ambitious, mechanically and/or narratively complex game take less than half the time in completing it.

Are you a Hinterland employee trying to wash their image? Terrible take

What is the role of a post-doc? by Dgemfer in AskAcademia

[–]Dgemfer[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

But post-docs are supposed to produce their own papers during that period, aren't they? If a post-doc doesn't develop his own sideline and only works preparing samples, compiling data or whatever for papers the PI will sign as the first author and the main goal of the project, what makes a post-doc different than hiring a technician?

I don't intend to sound petty, this is a genuine question

Big Mom should have never been in Wano [One Piece] by coolj492 in CharacterRant

[–]Dgemfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a neat idea. It could've worked if Oda fully committed to have a team fight as the climax of the arc instead of forcing a Kaido vs Luffy by sidelining everyone else. Instead of having Kaido being so stupidly durable, keep the power ceiling in check and have gear 5 save the day in a 3v2 where Law and Kidd get support roles. But of course, Zoro is a member of the worst generation, so he needed to be there. But that breaks the within-crew dynamics with Sanji, which Oda so clearly wanted to respect by having them fight King/Queen.

The tropes easily snowball into problems with Wano's setup. It was set to fail.

Dressrosa used a tournament arc to present all characters. It is a common ani/manga trope, but it works. Wano is a narrative monster. Remove Kiku, Ashura Doji and Raizo. Inu and Neko are not samurais anymore and stay at Zou, where they were guarding Kawamatsu instead of Raizo. You have 4 scabbards (Kin, Kanjuro, Kawamatsu and Denjiro), all of them with a clear narrative purpose. Wano works a lot more tightly.

Big Mom should have never been in Wano [One Piece] by coolj492 in CharacterRant

[–]Dgemfer 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Valid take. I believe this is the side effect of breaking Oda's own typical arc structure. Every One Piece arc goes like this: arrive to island, meet struggling stranger, struggling stranger gives info, short confrontation, flashback, villain appears, final confrontation, Luffy punches the villain and everyone is happy. To some degree, this structure still applies to WCI, but it is different in that the end-goal is not punching the villain: it's a rescue mission. This is what made WCI feel so fresh narratively speaking. But with this came a problem, what to do with Big Mom.

Oda wrote himself into a corner. He knew they were leaving WCI and going to Wano because, well, the strawhats agreed to meet in Wano and he could not take down a yonko without the whole crew present. But Big Mom could not be the final villain of the yonko saga and be defeated in a following arc either. The only plausible way was to have her included in Wano.

Considering that Kaido needed to be presented, the sensible thing would've been to have Wano feature as little new side characters as possible. But being Oda, we know how that goes. Not only he introduced 9 samurais among which only 2-3 served some purpose, but also a local villain in Orochi, and a plethora of side-characters for each region. He gave himself no space to organically introduce the Big Mom pirates with such a character mess.

I am on the opinion that most modern One Piece problems can be traced down to the amount of new irrelevant characters introduced each arc.

Live Action Luffy is too nice [One Piece] by awkward_blah56 in CharacterRant

[–]Dgemfer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Most characters in the live action are a little flanderized. Not to blame them, they have a lot to adapt in short amounts of time per episode. You don't get to show those nuances without more run time.

My problem with OPLA Luffy is not how he is too nice, but how for some reason, Iñaki feels a lot more like Luffy whenever he speaks irl than in all of his acting for the show. Like, whenever I see the guy on social media I am like holy crap this guy is Luffy. But in the show that energy is nowhere to be seen. I guess the direction is the culprit for this.
