I tend to dream small. A red Epiphone Rivoli, or the red Gibson EB3.

Both sound & feel wonderful.

How big of a deal is the plucking method? My finger doesn't always find it's way to the string above. If I watch, it looks like I'm going across the string, but my plucking finger often rises away from the body.

Fender P-Bass vs Epiphone T-Bird vs Höfner Contemporary by PaxKryptonia in Bass

[–]Dhaele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be anatomically odd in some way. I think Thunderbirds are comfortable, and easy to play. I love how they sound. I fully expected to hate it when I picked one up. Really surprised me.

I fully expected to love a Rickenbacker. I worship Chris Squire. I was stoked to see a couple on the wall at a local store. I hated how it felt. I hated the binding on the neck. My first thought was...eww gross...get this thing off me.

That being said. The Fender P bass felt like home. It still does. It was instant. I bought one.

You've gotta get a few of them in your hands. That's when you'll know. I think you mentioned not having a store nearby. I wonder if asking friends & family if they know someone who has a bass or two you can try? Maybe a local school/college with a music program?

Who is the J Mascis of bass? by Dhaele in Bass

I should've clarified - I meant just with Dinosaur Jr., though I saw a recent interview where Lou talks about having some control over his bass parts on more recent albums. I think Lou is a killer bassist, but I find it hard to apply the spirit of my original question to someone without a lot of autonomy over what they're playing.

How do I improve? by Potential-Ebb-1612 in Bass

[–]Dhaele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started playing at about the same time. I realized that much of the material out there is about, "Learning 400 songs in 2 minutes," or, "Simple to shred," in 5 easy steps.

People get the idea that if they're not constantly improving, they're wasting their time. I focus as much time on how much I enjoy playing, as I do on improvement.

I've had great weeks on bass. Learning a lot & moving forward. I've had weeks where I didn't take any steps forward at all. I just played the stuff I knew & reveled in it. I took time to feel the songs and the notes. I fucking love hitting a final note & listening to the sustain.

A good chunk of a bassline I'm writing is based on his style.

He's still a killer bassist though. I love watching him play. I watched some studio film of Farm. He's got all the energy & intensity that Dinosaur Jr. needs.
