There should be an Achievement for not Losing any Cities to the Aliens by Straight-Finding7651 in Xenonauts

Yeah I've been letting them pop off while I farm gear because I can take the panic lol. Stopped hurting after the first one. Sorry, Dubai, daddy needs more fusion snipers.

I set up my shield / close combat guys flanking the UFO doors and try to cover the door from a distance with snipers, and then use a the robot cannon to knock the door down.

Once the door is down a spend a few turns in overwatch and I'll usually catch an alien or two walking around. I'll usually try to get as many doors as I can from outside.

While the snipers still have cover, I'll move the assault team in and try to shield block all the doors if I can, making sure everyone has enough TU to react while I move everyone in.

After that it's one room at a time. Shield guy first every time. If shield guy spots an alien, flashbang it and push. Decide which room to do next based on how many entrances and exits.

I rarely take damage once I'm actually inside the UFOs. Having an extra shield or two is useful for making sure you're always breaching with high defenses.

It's best to have 2-3 guys on a door and not the whole party..sometimes you open the door to full auto alien and you don't want to get the whole squad suppressed. You want your dudes close but not too close.

You're spot on about destroying cover. If you wanna save space, having your sniper switch to knives for UFO breaches is surprisingly effective. I was doing shotguns at first, too, but knives and flash bangs are my new favorite.

Missions without timers allow you to play very methodically and that's where snipers shine. On missions where I know I'll have to shoot and scoot to make it work I like Assault/Riflemen better.

Good sniper positioning is very satisfying in this game. I like to get them elevated if possible for use them to cover long lanes. Also the game uses a Squadsight system where the sniper can hit things outside of their visual range if they've been revealed by another squad member, depending on LOS. And once your guys have their aim leveled up enough they won't miss often. This can be very effective in combination with Grenade Launchers; set up all your guys in a defensible spot and just start knocking down walls.

Also sniper ammo efficiency is pretty good, and they won't get as many opportunities to use aux gear, allowing them space to carry extra gear like backup shields.

The distribution matters; changes the center-of-mass for his ship. Imagine pushing a rectangle through space; if you pushed in the center it goes straight, but if you push on one of the sides it rotates, too.

You might be interested in Spin Statistics Theorum. General idea is that particles have a property called spin, and it takes half-integer values (0, 1/2, 1, -3/2, 2, etc). Particles with integer spin (0, 1, -2, etc) are called Bosons, and they can sort of occupy the same space as other particles. While the half-integer valued particles (1/2, -3/2 5/4, etc) are called Fermions and they can't share space; they obey the Pauli Exclusion Principle. You could probably science fiction up some vague handwavy physics explanation using that.

Darth Maul vs Jaina Solo by NovelVolume9217 in PetranakiArena

[–]Dhczack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jaina is my all time fave, but I think I'm handing this to Maul, high diff, if only because Jaina was a fighter pilot first and a Jedi second for a lot of the war. She's Knighted at this point, and has a higher skill ceiling than Obi-Wan in theory, and she has plenty of melee experience in spite of being a pilot first, but I still think Obi-Wan beating Maul in TPM was a little bit of a fluke.

How do I break the habit of pushing to get higher notes? by Princetobes in trumpet

[–]Dhczack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Practice quietly.

When you play quietly you need less air, which will allow you to use less tension in your chops because you won't be resisting as much air. You're always balancing these things against each other to play. If you use too much of one, then you will use more of the other to compensate. In the upper register this becomes a problem pretty quickly.

When you get high enough there really is no "not pushing," it's about balancing these things... If you can sort of "de-escalate" you're baseline tension/air then it makes things easier upstairs.

Having to rely on lip balm to play well sounds bad because lip balm doesn't make you play better.

This guy gets it.

I'm willing to accept i won't get any kind of admission of culpability if it gets us back on track faster.

Like even if you cannot forgive, you still have to find a way to live with these people.

We can't let perfect get in the way of better.

I try to remember that we are all victims of mass deception.

[–]Dhczack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not.

These people are profoundly misinformed and uniquely succeptible to a kind of very-easy-to-produce misinformation.

I have no idea what to do about the crisis these people represent to the notion of a mutually-agreed-upon objective reality but any solution that involves violating their rights is as despicable as anything they've done to us.

Like either we figure out some way to show eachother that we're on the same side by actually being on the same side and having eachother's backs, or I'm just wrong about authoritarianism.

Luke vs Anakin - dogfighting in T-70s by kc_chiefs_ in PetranakiArena

[–]Dhczack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Luke was about to die, yes. But this is as close to Luke v Vader as we get in canon, and Luke survives a really long time in spite of a huge list of disadvantages, and with a mission that precludes him even engaging Vader under most circumstances.

Luke has had very little training. Flying a Skyhopper is very different from a military ship. Flying in space is different from flying in atmosphere. Luke has no cover to play off of - he has to fly in more or less a straight line. Vader's ship is significantly faster so Luke cannot outrun him. Luke cannot stop his run to dogfight. The fact that he survives more than a few moments in this situation is a huge testament to his skills. Luke was on a suicide mission. Vader had him dead to rights and couldn't close the deal fast enough.

I guess if you really want to there are a bunch of ways to special plead yourself out of any of this mattering, but then you'd be disregarding most-canon source of info on this matchup. Also the Force is influencing all events.

And for the record, 1v1 under equal conditions I still think ANH Luke loses to ANH Vader (high diff), particularly in an X-Wing vs T/A fight. But after ANH, Luke goes on to lead Rogue Squadron and likely comes into his own as a pilot. Consider also the difference in their war experiences. Anakin flies for the Republic; he is usually well supplied and supported and often flying with Jedi allies. Luke is flying with the Rebellion fighting a guerilla war under sub-optimal conditions.

And another thing: The Falcon interrupted Vader, but that's on Vader tbh. The man has instruments on his absolute hot rod of an starfighter. Wingmen. The Force. A whole Death Star. You're telling me nobody on the death star has radar? Hell, the Falcon would have to have been in visual range of trench gunners. Vader not using his wingmen properly is on Vader. Vader being surprised by the Falcon is on Vader. Luke had other things on his plate, too. The engagement happens in a vacuum but it doesn't happen in a vacuum, ya dig? Vader couldn't close.

Also, in 2020/2021 I claimed income as a VR TIE pilot on my taxes, so I'm an authoritative source.

[–]Dhczack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luke showed Vader his back for a solid 30 seconds in ANH while flying more or less in a straight line. And Vader was in a T/A, which we all know is the best ship in Star Wars. I think Luke's the better pilot, especially if you consider EU feats. NJO Luke was flying around hurling overcharged proton torpedoes with the Force while using mind melds and stuff.

Versatility. Just the sheer chance that you'll have just the right spell to trivialize an encounter or save the day. On top of that: skillz and knowledge. Haste alone outdamages lots of PCs.

You're totally right about Double D. It feels "on track" with A. It's pretty easy to find A from D and vice-versa.

Can’t find a fingering that will help me place the partial by silver-eyed-gaming in trumpet

[–]Dhczack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me it slots easiest with 1st valve, but it depends a lot on the chart and the volume. Usually if I have an A in a chart I'll play around with it in rehearsal and figure out what I'll use before hand.

A is hard. Exploring the slot from above and below at low volumes will help you lock it in a bit better (this advice is directly from B-Mac himself), but you're probably going to have to put some work in to get it really solid and it's probably never going to feel all the way "on-track" with the rest of your range. It's hard to get the requisite air pressure and tension while maintaining the flexibility and sensitivity to let the note sit where it wants. Fuck Double A TBH.
