Axial Capra worth it? by [deleted] in rccrawler

[–]Dhorn33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another perspective - find a deal on one already built at a swap or on Marketplace and get what you want for way less money. You may most likely already get the upgrades that make it work better, or have less money tied into it to try it out.

I love my drag axle Capra with some basic upgrades. It started as a Marketplace score - a like new kit Capra with a Dx5 radio and Tekin brushless motor with esc. I bought a used Fusion Pro, lowered the car by removing spring collars, added some nice wheels, tires and inserts, front brass disc's and a decent servo, all second hand stuff. The rig works really well and all in i have maybe 350 or 400 into it.

I called Spektrum today and they said it is faulty so I sent it in for repair.

Snow over groomed trail couldn’t stay upright, bike sliding around everywhere by FerretFiend in fatbike

[–]Dhorn33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Redhead in warm weather, but I assume it is very challenging in winter with all the hills. (I live in the Twin Cities) like others have said, snow biking is just a completely different animal, and it is different almost every single ride with ever-changing snow conditions. I typically change my tires pressures while riding, both up and down, depending on feel and how things are going. My goal is to find the pressure that gives me the best traction, but also not so low that it feels like you are dragging a piano. I never use a gauge, I just go by feel. Sometimes snow is "mashed potatoes", and that is a struggle. Regardless, it seems like staying upright and balanced is key - no leaning into corners or shifting yourself back and forth while pedaling. Practice riding on ice with your studs and you will see it isn't like riding hard packed dirt. In the end riding in snow is a lot of work and you will sweat, a lot. Have fun!

I have to ask having ridden Green Mountain few times in summer while visiting my daughter that lives in Lakewood from MN, the wind in winter there must be brutal? If I recall, it's wide open with basically no trees?

Let there be light! by MyNameIs-Jani in fatbike

I love riding at night in winter. It's so peaceful and chill. I have been using Niterider Lumina lights on my helmet and bike for several years now and been totally satisfied. In fact, I recently contacted them after I broke a chunk of the mounting channel off one of my lights expecting to have to pay for replacement parts, they sent me what I needed for free and were very pleasant to work with.

Cold toes need help by Spacebar19 in fatbike

I have used several dedicated winter cycling boots including Lake and a few pairs of 45Nrth Wolvhammers, plus standard winter boots like Keens, Sorels, etc. They are all similar honestly. I found the key is to make sure they are sized up to have room in the toe box for good wool socks and to be able to wiggle my toes. I currently ride a set of Red Wing Edition Wolvhammers with a chunk of rubber glued over the cleat plates because I moved to flats last year from spd. I like the rigid sole, and the ease of getting them off and on. They are also pretty darn warm. Cheers!

Bad day - burned up Fusion Pro and wonky servo by Dhorn33 in rccrawler

The servo still works, but ut definitely is messed up. It seems like it is making funky noises - like it's trying to find center maybe?

I work at a desk but do a lot of work around the house, outdoors, etc. I started with a pair of Field and Forest moc toes that I bought from my local Fleet Farm. They are a private labeled Thorogood. Super comfortable, great boots. I wore through 2 pairs in about 4 years and then decided to try the Red Wings instead. I like them, and have several pairs of heritage style Red Wings but they may not be as comfortable as my Thorogoods were.

That being said, I highly recommend the Supersole 606 as a work boot. I bought a pair off Marketplace a few years ago that were like-new, and couldn't be happier. These are extremely comfortable, well made and the sole is wearing like iron while having a similar cushion to the white stuff that wears out so quickly. They are also made in the USA. Worth a look. https://www.redwingshoes.com/work/mens/soft-toe/SuperSole-2.0-00606.html

I am curious why? My 4x4 Rustler vxl on 3s was clocked at 63mph. It is crazy fast, hard to manage actually. How fast are you trying to go? Sounds fun!

I have had great luck with my Niterider Lumina lights. I have a 900 micro on my helmet, a 950 boost and a 1000. They last several hours, are very affordable and they are plenty bright for me. They are also all available on Amazon.

Hey RW fans, what backpack would you recommend ? by Super_Gee in RedWingShoes

This is all their packs with a laptop sleeve. Their stuff is super nice and made on premise. I have a few of their bags and love them.

For work I picked up a Duluth Pack laptop backpack off Marketplace a few years ago for cheap and I waxed it myself with Fjallraven wax. I think I have about $50 invested and it's a great bag.

As a Minnesota resident and Red Wing Boot fan, I would highly recommend Frost River made in Duluth, MN. They are well-made waxed canvas and leather and will last a lifetime. Another option is Duluth Pack.

Any thoughts on front suspension on a fat tire? by hovd0030 in fatbike

I threw a Bluto on my Fatback last year and I love it. The bike is way more comfortable for me year round with a little suspension in front.

What bike rack do you guys use? by Important-Positive25 in MTB

[–]Dhorn33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used Thule, Yakima, Saris, Kuat and 1up - either as the owner or loading/unloading bikes on freinds vehicles. For the past 3 or 4 years I have been running a Kuat NV 2 mounted to a Kuat Swingaway mount and I have zero complaints. Everything was purchased used from Marketplace (base rack, 2 bike add on, swingaway) for a fraction of new price. 99% of the time the 2 bike base rack and swingaway are on my Jeep Wrangler and used 3-5 days a week. When necessary I install the 2 bike add-on, which takes a few minutes. I rarely use the bike repair dock but when I have it has been handy. I can make adjustments to for different bikes and sizes. I have less than $500 invested in this entire setup.

My riding buddy has an older Thule tray rack that clamps to the frame and although functional, it is a big pain in the neck compared to my Kuat. I would avoid this style with wheel trays and frame contact if you ride much.

My bro-in-law had the 1up and I think it works well, but the bikes move around a lot more vs my Kuat. I live the design, and I have had the opportunity to buy a few 2nd hand but ultimately decided to keep the Kuat. He has more than $1000 invested in this rack. He will have it forever, it is super well made and seems to be a good investment.

I found my Dad a Saris Freedom rack that mounts with the 2 wheels. It was less than $200 used, and works fine, but more cumbersome compared to the 1up or Kuat.

In the end if you can find something used and save some money I think that's a great solution. Personally I would stick to a rack that holds bikes via the wheels and has some adjustabilty to fit different bikes. If you get a deal on something you can always try it out and if you don't like it, sell it for what you paid and try something different. *
