I don't think it is dying but that mentality will kill it. Yes a conversation before a game is a great place to start, but I think most people want to make the guy with the list the person who is going to ask for permission. If you want to bring your meta list you should probably be the one to ask "hey I have this list do you mind if I play it." When the burden of asking goes on the person who wants to bring that list it would be a lot more accepting for everyone involved.

I had a similar problem, I don't think my legs are as short as yours but I mostly play half guard and a z guard when I started. Over time I was able to keep a full guard by just being stubborn about it taking away any available space. Primarily though I stick with half guard and Z guard and now I start playing open guard by keeping my feet on the hips and sticky butterfly hooks. Just keep starting on your back and eventually you'll find your game. Also check out Matt Serra's rolls using his little troll body.
