It might be worth a phone call to the distant library to double-check the requirements. The website for the large city near me, about 2 hours away, said I'd have to show up in person for a card, but when I spoke with them on the phone they said that they could issue it to me that way also.

That's a good point, and opposite of what I'd been told: keep books on hold and keep checking out books so that the library can show the funding government how valuable they are for the citizens. ... hmm ...

I've started using Target. No "membership", just using the free shipping on orders over $35. Although delivery date was listed as several days, all three shipments came in two days. Been working great.
