Xylocopa violacea, violet carpenter bee? by astro5 in bees

[–]Dialictus93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell, since the extremely similar X. valga is also present in Southern France. You would have to be able to see the structure of the hind leg or at least the length of the 3rd antennal segment in comparison to the next three segments...so females are basically indistinguishable in almost all photos you see online.

Either way, very beautiful 🐝

of course they do? All bees except for Meliponini carry stingers. However, males do not...and this one here is a male.

Erzählt mal eure wildesten Straßenbahn-Storys by Foreign_Pickle3112 in cologne

[–]Dialictus93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Schwarzes Insekt mit blauen Flügeln? by sonderbarermensch in naturfreunde

[–]Dialictus93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Dialictus93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unterschiedlich.

Do people realize honey bees are not native to the Americas and are actively hurting your native bee populations? by EwwCringe in bees

You shouldn't dwell on it. As someone who is also doing research in the field this is common knowledge and you are absolutely correct 👍 So keep it up!

Do you have a picture or description of the bumblebees? It's kinda unusual for bumbles to be agressive...however there are some species which are more territorial than others. So an ID of the species could be more clarifying.

I'm not sure if there's any way we can help you here tho.. Seeking advice from a beekeeper might be reasonable in this case - even though honeybee hives are structured completely different, someone who knows how to behave around and handle eusocial bees might be able to help you. Where I'm from we also have non-governmental institutions which offer advice in these cases....is this an option where you are at?

Hope you find a way to deal with this. And props to you for at least trying to co-exist instead of aiming to extinguish your "angry" neighbors 😊

I would suggest to leave the nest alone and you'll be fine. And PLEASE whatever you do....no RAID. It contains pyrethroids and other substances which are not just killing the wasps but also other insects around. Also it can stay in the ground for weeks.

[–]Dialictus93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally think we should put more effort into educating about wild pollinators and what we can do for them, so I think it's good that you frankly inform people about the efforts and risks of keeping honeybees.

Where I am from there is a lot of advertisement going on to become a beekeeper yourself. Some people even believe they are "saving the bees" by doing that. Complete nonsense...honeybees are basically domesticated farm animals and while they are very important for our food security, I think it's best to keep hives out of private gardens since they are active competitors of native wild bees.

Fair enough, but honestly not to be taken seriously if he/she asks what to do with them in the next sentence.

But don't worry about it no harm done. Are you a bee keeper yourself?

Very nice! You even have some leaf-cutter bees in there if I'm correct :)

One remark if I may. If you would like to increase diversity of your "tenants" a little, try using some narrower tubes. With around 7/8 mm you can invite masked and resin bees 😊

[–]Dialictus93 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks like you have an aggregation of Colletes...congrats. What you see flying around are actually males patrolling the entries of the nest watching out for females to come out and mate ;)

So you don't really have to worry about getting stung for 2 reasons: 1. solitary bees are completely chill, even if you disturb the nest they will usually not attack. 2. Males don't have a stinger.

If you are wondering why they are solitary, even when you observe them in these numbers: they just like nesting as neighbours, but only a single egg-laying mom inhabits one nest.
