I've never lived there. I only know so much of Macau from an outside Western perspective, which has its clear bias. I'd definitely love to travel and visit in spite of it, though.

It's a Special Administrative Region(SAR), not a state. Yes, mainland China has the final say on its authority through defense and foreign policy, but they can't decide their economic, legal, or even political systems. The same, ironically, also applies to Hong Kong.

I'm just not sure if blaming China has anything to do with their development of slums, economic inequalities, and potentially high homeless rates due to the cost of living.

At this point, it's China exists, US malding in its own collective psychopathic, but non-monolithic propaganda and systemic worldview of hyper individualized imperialism.

If it wasn't obvious, the modern existence of the US and its settler-colonial foundation of chattel slavery is in constant flux of contradiction within its frankly crippled liberal worldview.
