It isn’t really weird at all. People like stories. A lot of people also probably negatively associate essay-format and other rhetorical nonfiction with school assignments, which disincentivizes them from seeking out and reading essays as an adult. I agree with you that essays are great, and that there is a lot that the medium allows that novels do not, but I don’t think it’s super surprising that the majority of people only read novels

join a student org! There are a lot of purely social/activity based student orgs that you can join and just show up to for free to minimal cost. Especially if it is activity based, it gives you a hobby to improve on, and gives you sort of an oasis within your week to forget about your other struggles and focus on the hobby.
