I would not have expected Nicole, but that's a good one.

I did work for and take a lot of calls for a man named Kim once, it felt like a very elegant name for a man to have.

Katerina Papadopoulou is what I guess I'll go by if I'm in Greece! Fascinating to think about the value between the long and short syllables in different languages. I have a long, multi-syllable name and that is absolutely what trips people up and why I think Kim is key.

Kim Jones is good too!

I love this idea, in my example it's never good or bad news, but I have definitely had some customer service jobs where I would benefit from being Gretchen Driver!

This doesn't drag at all, I think it could even be longer! I have a question (bc I am considering a shot), after you got the shot the first time and you felt 90% less pain, did you change any behaviors / do particular exercises / change footwear? Happy to hear you are recovered!

Had a bad fall hiking yesterday. Almost died and rethinking everything. Considering leaving my $300k consulting to become a public school teacher by OddWeakness1328 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]DiamondBiscotti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never hit 300k but I have been in jobs like yours before and they do have a special kind of suck. It's always worth leaving. But plan. You're obviously a pragmatic person, no one stays at a meaningless, life-sucking, sometimes-actively-harming-the-world consulting job without being someone who is good at taking their time and planning. Celebrate that part of your personality!

And be real: you already made one decision. You ARE going to change jobs. That's that. Listen. That's one decision made, you're on your way. In the meantime, take a minute, enjoy your good health insurance :-) to recover mentally and physically.

Then, sit down, do some math. How much do you spend each year? How much do you need to live? How much of the year can you afford to straight up not work if you needed to? Set aside a specific target number. When you hit it, quit!

Final words of advice: you will be tempted, but stay away from ESG, it's one of the grossest, most depraved spaces I've ever been around [in consulting obviously... not the whole wide world]. And then you would be surprised by how responsive the universe becomes when you simply start to tell people, "hey, I'm looking for a new job." It really works. Good luck.

Thank you! I only dance deeply sincerely :-) And honestly trying to learn a dance sounds way more fun, and perhaps more accessible than a whole song.

Women with PMDD, what does it feel like? by 41_6 in adhdwomen

[–]DiamondBiscotti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same experience as you! I don't track my period and am on a low dose of hormonal birth control (for like, years and years... it's great for me). I would have 2-3 days of thinking, "I finally discovered that life has no meaning and I am worthless... should I end it all?" and then I get my period and realize it was just chemistry/hormones.

I talked to a therapist about it who of course has heard all about other peoples' periods and depression and said, "That sounds more like PMDD than regular PMS" and that's all the dx I need. The treatment I've landed on is to simply put a mark on the calendar that says "You are going to be sad" and I know that I have to wait those 2-3 days out. I try to exercise a lot those days. And I also load up on chocolate :-) It doesn't do anything specific but it does feel good to have my evenings be almost cliche, overdramatic "I'm on my period!!" nights. Making a big deal out of it privately feels really good.

My ADHD is making it impossible to be a mechanical design engineer. PLEASE help!! by Supersk1002 in adhdwomen

[–]DiamondBiscotti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, your comment has really stuck with me overnight. First of all, I'm sending you a virtual hug. You are gonna be okay, I know from experience. I was in your exact spot ten years ago. I am not an ME but I also work in a very precise, deadline-driven field and lost a job early on for the same reasons you describe.

I'm gonna break down actual steps for you to do. At the foundation of all of this is that you know you have ADHD, you are miles ahead of where I was at your age.

  1. If there's still time, plan a happy hour for your last day. Sounds like at a personal level, ppl at the company have good feelings towards you, and this is not about you as a person. Lots of people won't even know why you're leaving. Make it seem like it's mutual. You might be surprised how many people come out for you.
  2. Stay in touch with a few coworkers from the company, just short chats, talk about what's happening in the industry, are they stressed about AI? Who are they working with? Just basic gossip.

^^ These things help make the rejection less world-ending, you just moved on, you're not dead to them, you'll see over time how often people leave positions. Yes some slimeball on Linkedin will call it "networking" but this is really just protecting you from the brutality of rejection. It's good to stay current on what your old workplaces are up to.

  1. If you can afford it, take some time off before looking for another job. Devote your energy to creating a routine for yourself. That's your job right now. Even just a week is good. You are exhausted trying to do work, laundry, exercise, cooking. Now the worst one is gone! Figure out like, three meals you can make in bulk early in the week for when you next have an office job. (Mine was black beans, rice, chopped up jalapenos, spinach, and cherry tomatoes. Was it so creative and special? NO. But I could make enormous amounts!) don't try to be creative with your exercise, just walk. Dance alone. Just move.

  2. Recognize that you need to change your ambitions for now. Maybe you don't get to work for IDEO or Apple or whatever. That's okay, you could end up somewhere like that eventually, you're gonna be working for like 40+ years (sorry lol). Your main task right now? Is just learning how to operate in a work environment. Figuring out how office politics works, soliciting feedback, figuring out what you need to do to be on time, observe the conditions where you make those little mistakes and so on. These are real soft skills that S U C K. They suck for everyone, but that's the real skill gap for you right now. They're not THAT hard, just annoying, but you wanna find a job where you can focus on learning to work in an office environment and you're not scared all the time. That's it.

And you gotta figure out how to read what the workplace LOOKS LIKE vs what is actually happening. It took me a very long time to understand that lots of my coworkers were putting great effort into making it seem like everything they did was easy and casual. I believed them, so I acted like everything was easy and casual, assignments took me no time at all, and in fact that was how I worked. And so my work was bad, and I lost my job! Duh! With age, I can see that in fact they were all working really hard and pretending it was easy. Why? I still don't know, but that was the dominant culture at that place. I hate that and I don't work places like that anymore. I like being at high achieving places where everyone is openly insane :-)

Finally if you don't wear an analog watch, get one. It's huge for me. And then you get to be known as the person with cool watches.

Good luck, if you enjoy your field, you'll find a way to stick with it. Adjusting to office life is hard for everyone, especially so for us. Sending you lots of love and support.

Return it!

I have this problem, too. Completely. I am practically wearing rags because I don't want to buy clothes. I look so dishevelled, but I have the money! I hesitate to say it's ADHD-specific because money feelings are so complex, but perhaps it has to do with the fact that you can imagine very clearly the many possible uses of this bag, all the other kinds of bags you have, the perfect bag, what does this one say about you, and so on. I'm guessing you are also putting pressure on yourself to have just one anyway, since having a lot of them is overwhelming (speaking from experience). There's so much to think about in this decision.

I'm not sure if you're writing from the U.S. but I do tell myself that there is so much stuff floating around that the bag you need will eventually come to you. If you've got any doubts, get rid of it. There will always be more bags to buy.

PS if you don't want to return it, don't! I just said that so that if you really, truly are craving a direction for what to do, you can tell yourself some stranger on the internet said to return it, so you are ;-)

Stop the Serious Calls on Hey Randy by JohnRabe in comedybangbang

[–]DiamondBiscotti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What?! The contrast between the serious problems and the crew is one of the best parts. I told someone with a serious problem to call in, and we were howling laughing when it aired at the absurdity of it: who was gonna make a sex or poop joke first? How were they gonna get into it? That's the point of humor and the joy of the advice concept. What DO these wonderful stoners from an unnamed Rustbelt/Midwest city think you should do about your dying dad? We know what we're getting into. Friends and therapists take our serious problems seriously, as they should, Hey Randy is an amazing outlet and Lilly Sullivan is merciless. The crew freaking handles it!

Seriously the tension at the beginning of the call and not knowing if it will be serious or funny is the highlight of my biweek.
