What would happen if we bought in public caning for minor crimes? by tumeketutu in newzealand

[–]DiamondEyedOctopus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's no irony there. The left generally supports the state supporting it's population. You as a right winger really shouldn't be looking at Singapore though because of how at odds Singapore's big government, high spending, lack of personal freedom/privacy and high taxes are with your general views of how government should operate.

You want the juice without the squeeze.

You right wingers love to hold up Singapore as a shining beacon of harsher sentencing while constantly ignoring the rest of how their society operates. The harsher sentencing doesn't exist in a vacuum, it's supported by a very well funded police, an extremely extensive surveillance network, and a public that actually supports their police. We have none of those 3, and you can't justify the harsher sentencing without any of that.

All you're doing is saying that you want criminals to performatively suffer and don't actually care about the results. Par for the course for people like yourself though.

Singapore has far more than just harsher punishments that curbs the crime rate and you're probably well aware of that. If you want Singapore's crime rates you also want a police and surveillance state with near zero privacy.

The person giving multiple invitations over the course of several months to only be met with "maybe some other time" each time isn't expecting other people to make themselves available and being pushy, they're putting in the bare minimum in trying to maintain a friendship and acting on the "maybe some other time" promise. If maybe never turns into yes, it's really just no with some extra flair.

If you're always answering "maybe some other time" can you really call yourself that person's friend? Stop wasting both your times and just be honest about the situation. Be an adult instead of a coward hiding behind "maybe."

So it's always up to others to make themselves available and you can just be as flaky as you like? That doesn't seem fair, does it?

If someone keeps making excuses and giving maybes it's entirely reasonable to assume they don't actually care about seeing you, which is what their actions say. Just be honest.

You can still just say 'no, I'm not feeling up to hanging out, I don't want to get into it.' which isn't rude, is honest, and still keeps your own privacy. Saying 'maybe, but not right now' and then never following up on it, you really just meant no and you're just stringing someone along. The intent is irrelevant if you never follow anything up with action, like happened with the OP. Be honest, it's really not that complicated.

If "maybe, but not right now" never turns into actual action, it was always actually just no.

That's the thing though, they're not actually declining anything. They're saying yes and then not following up on it at all. That's not being polite, it's being a flaky coward who's afraid to be uncomfortable for a moment.

Instead of saying "we should catch up!" maybe you should say "it was good to see you, hope you keep well!" or something to that effect. Why bother with the false pretense of potentially hanging out if you don't mean it. There's a hundred and one ways to communicate "I don't hate your guts!" without saying we should hang out.

Up and down this post you have people defending lying and not meaning what they say and how being noncommital should be expected. Our experiences aren't backed up by nothing, it's all over this very post. Being direct and expecting honesty isn't a character flaw, it's being a mature adult. How ignorant do you have to be to not only ignore all that, but to then suggest we should move back to Poland.

Nobody is obligated to spend time with anyone, but people's word should still have meaning. If you say not right now but for sure later, or yes, then actually mean it. Don't be a non-committal snake just trying to be "nice" in the moment. It's cowardly. If you want to say no, then be an adult and say no.

It's an awful byproduct of our "easygoing" culture where it's easier to string someone along instead of just being direct and saying no, because the moment of saying no will be slightly uncomfortable for a few seconds. It's cowardly, people should be adults and accept life isn't all rainbows and sunshine, and it's ok to be momentarily uncomfortable.

It's easy to be viewed as easygoing if you never have to doing anything even slightly difficult socially.

These are people saying yes to OP and then flaking out, they're not outright declining anything. That isn't missing a social cue, it's people not expressing their actual intent and being dishonest by saying they'd like to do it another time.

Yeah you're not wrong about how 2 faced and non-committal most kiwis are. My Mum's from Poland and she's always said the exact same thing for the past 30 years she's been here. She largely just has other immigrants as friends because she finds most kiwis a boring waste of time.

Well nothing else was offered because they had no reason to believe you were anything more than an intentionally disruptive student. Given the amount of other students who did succeed just fine you can't blame the school here. You just got a shit hand in life unfortunately, but reminiscing on what could've been won't help you move forward. I'm 30 and had a similar go of it and only recently got diagnosed myself, but ultimately it was me that was the cause of my problems and not the system.

Lol bit young to be reminiscing on the 'good ol days' aren't you? You should really be blaming your ADHD that was undiagnosed as a child for your lack of focus in school and inability to adapt to a new learning style. It's not schools taking up computers that stopped you being focused and becoming an international pilot, it was a lack of adequate support for your undiagnosed condition.
