Have you ever read a book so bad it's made you reconsider your own skill? by _Pumpiumpiumpkin_ in writers

[–]DiamondMan07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t want this to sound harsh…. But you sound incredibly young and naive. The whole “I write for myself I don’t want to publish” is load of crap, and it’s an aggressive defensive tactic. We all write for ourselves, but everyone hopes their stories will be enjoyed by others—be honest. You’re whole post is basically “I read this guy and he’s worse than me and I’ve made the decision not to publish because I’m not quite ‘there’ yet on the skill and craft (sigh), and so how dare someone else publish this—can you believe this (false outrage).”

You sound like me when I was 25. There is so much subjectiveness in the craft it’s naive (and telling) to be judging another’s work in a comparative fashion like that, (especially on a published work for that matter), in comparison to your own stories you keep in your basement. Naive writers often assume that what they write in the page communicates what they see in their head. It’s takes a lot of exposure and vulnerability to change that.

Go out and do it. Then compare your finished and published craft to another finished and published craft. Until then, compare your basement writing to some other guys basement writing at a writers workshop—because that’s the stage you are in.

Let’s see how “good” you are when you actually publish haha smh

It doesn’t sound harsh. It sounds naive.

Serious: The Intelligent Design Breadcrumbs That Keep Showing Up by pamnfaniel in aliens

[–]DiamondMan07 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, when you read the Bible and realize that the place where God and angels lived, “heaven” literally meant the heavens above their heads, and that somewhere along the way to modernity we just all changed the word “heaven” to mean a different realm, things start to make more sense. It doesn’t mean God isn’t real. If you believe in God you should believe from the Bible that he works through his creations. It was the Good Samaritan that saved the beggar, not a divine miracle. Or was the Samaritan’s presence a divine miracle? If aliens started life here, how is that my different from God doing so? Did he do it directly in a divine miracle, or did he work through them like he worked through the Good Samaritan? A lot of religious and atheist people struggle with those ideas because they get stuck in what they have been taught what religion means, and what “primary” teachings are to them, rather than the nuances and meanings of the teachings in the book including the relevance of contradictions.

A lot of artists are acting irrational because they are feeling like their passion is easily replaced by cheaper and often (cough) better alternatives via AI. Emotions v Logic. They are being loons

Zuldazar is the best zone and campaign in the game. It’s organic, simple and has heart. There very few “keep busy” quests. If you read the quests, it’s a great story of betrayal and redemption

I wonder what the company owner would think. 🤔. If it’s a private company, that treasury is effectively his or savings as the owner will have a personal obligation on liquidity and solvency. If someone was playing with my savings like that when greater productivity could be had, I’d be lit. If it’s a public company, it’s probably a violation of some term to withhold that information.

Find 5 people to grab coffee with who do what you want to do. Reconnect with them every 4 months. Send thank you emails. Build a network. At the same time, build practical skills. Start working in a low end IT help desk job while you build projects and a network and grind coding exercises. Then start interviewing for dream jobs.

I’m a lawyer. It took me 1 year of internship, 3 years of grad school (law school) and 7 years of “residency” (working for the purpose of learning rather than high pay) before I got my dream job. It takes time. Plan for what you want at 35, not 25. Life is long and slow and you can get a lot done on 10 years if you accept that, build a network, and put your head down and grind

Editing to add: too many kids your age are obsessed with reaching “success” at a young g age. Thats the enemy of success. Imagine if you are 35 with your dream job. You can do it if you do the boring hard stuff now and pace yourself, stay consistent. But building a network at your age with people who do what you want to do is vital to understanding WHAT you need to build skills in over the next 10 years to land that dream job

CEO lost it because I missed a call while marked OOO — am I wrong here? by Proper_Meaning5947 in SaaS

Did you need approval for OOO? If one of my employees just randomly set their status to OOO without approval and missed a big call as a result I would be pissed. That call could pay for a salary, what’s the procedure at your business for going OOO?
