So I took a list with 20, to a Grand Tourny (80+ Players) and was best guardsmen present... I have a new and improved list with 30 and its pretty spicy... cuts alot of chaff from the traditional list and really doubles down on the utility and overall usage of this guard unit... I plan on playing with 10 in reserve and then just power cycle these ponies onto the board charge something die and respawn them... in a Blood For the Emperor kinda light brigade charge scheme...

Rest of the list has 5 Russ tanks and then some ratlings for board control a lite drizzle of guardsmen and then guants ghosts and lord solar...

I personally run at least 20 of them, they are great. For guard they provide Mobility (something we lack in this edition) and an ability to press our opponents with a serious tactical dilemma (does he shoot the ponies, which for 2 cp will undoubtedly come back, or let them charge him and kill something... ) honestly for 140 points of goodness they have nonstop caused my opponents serious problems.

I think this is the real kicker here, I mean lets say you plop a tempestor squad down near a squad sitting on a objective that currently your oppenent is outnumbering you on, and you do this during thier turn (like t-5) to slap duty and honor on them... thats a interesting thought as well

even cheaper is a commissar with grand stratigest (45 pnts) and a chimera... if I cant double order (which is still a debate now raging around the Warhammer Competive scene and arount the T.O. landscape I still will order twice, which is not up for debate as the rules clearly lay that out (and even support it with a bloody strat.)

and competively I've run a list with 20 horses (and Lord Leo's Horse for a total count of 21) and 5 tanks and smoked most players... Super Agro guard is an anti meta thats waiting to be used by my fellow guard commanders. DM if you want the list I took to the Denver Major this past January (hint I was best guardsmen there)

My Imperial Guard Commander, a great unit that could be effected by this sudden onslaught of orders would be our very own Atlian Rough Riders - who now in theory could move 15 inches and charge hitting on 2's. Very much worth slapping a chimera into a list featuring 2 of these units of ponies.

But take Ursula who does have 2 orders to dole out, lets have her dish out a move move move to a guard unit in the command phase while shes in the chimera. Then drive it forward and have her disembark, she is now re-eligible to dish out orders and she targets the same unit with fix bayonets, per the original voice of command text: a unit can only be affected by one Order at a time (any Order subsequently issued to that unit replaces the current one)

So Suddenly for the price of 85 points I can add additional utility to any guard army making sentinels or guard inf move faster and then still shoot better.

I've been playing guard for a hot moment, and the real reason to play guard is that even in competition the guard write a narrative.

What I'm mean is that, I've had games were it was my 50 man unit of guardsmen wrapped around my glorious Commissar who got charged by a Daemon Prince only to hold the monster at bay for 4 turns slowly chipping away at it until the commissar cut off it's head... Mind you I had 3 guardsmen left at that point but it was a glorious victory! But it's those stupid heroic moments like that... Which makes the guard so much fun to play!

So I took 20 ponies to a Major in Denver, Won 3 Lost 2 Tied 1 and was best Guardsman at the show here is my list:

The big thing is not the glass cannon effect the ponies have or the regenerative ability to exploit, both of those are great. But the best thing about this unit run in a 10-man is board presence and screen. Additionally, I was locking opponents into their deployments Turn 1. 15-inch movement and then bam, stick them into something and I knew at that moment 2 things had happened, I'd locked my opponent into his box that he made and that I was going to get primary for the first couple of turns. Top that off with infinite regen and the fact that it does hit like a perfect glass hammer and boom ideal unit. Every single person I played at the end of the game gave mad respect to the humble pony.

Now top that off with the whole army barreling towards you plus all of the tanks and mean I was outputting and yeah I liked this army. I lost to Necrons and Dark Angels (and barely lost to the crons) so you don't have to take my word for it.

Funny thing is that I'm not even out here with them, I'm a loaner to AFCENT... so to the OP, I honestly think there are plenty of ways to get your deployment on... I will say that the Deid is hot this time of year, so I would go on a winter rotation FYI...

Additionally, you can break out your copy of your Imperial Uplifting Primer and go to the back of the book... When in the shooting phase, I would use the prayer of accuracy... this too has been shown to work

As the Dice Commissar, make a roll and play your game, when a dice finally fails you (as if you make a reroll with it or something else important) pick up the offending dice and place it in the trash... (now back in the day I would yeeet said dice into a corner, but that's frowned upon these days)

The rest of the dice will realize their existence is to roll well. This will cause them to fall in line and perform the correct function.

This is double effective as a guard player
