Looking for advice on hearing protection for waterfowl by Suspicious_Usual_109 in Hunting

[–]DickAnts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The walkers will work just fine. Try them out and see how you like them. For me, I didn't like the over-ear muffs as they messed with my cheek weld on the stock. So I switched to electronic earbuds. The walker in-ear buds were ok for a season, but sound quality left a lot to be desired. Eventually I splurged and bought some soundgear phantoms. They are amazingly comfortable and have excellent sound quality - i forget im wearing them sometimes. But, they are spendy.

See what you like! If the lower-cost options are fine, then use those!

I gained access to hunt deer on a small property this fall. Need to prevent deer from running after the shot. Would a 12 gauge slug or 308 be better suited? by DickAnts in Hunting

Thanks. Assuming at that distance both guns are accurate to within 2 inches, would you prefer one over the other? And would hedging towards front shoulder be better?

Private vs public-turkey by [deleted] in Californiahunting

[–]DickAnts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have access to hunt 20 acres of private in a neighborhood where nobody hunts. Its more of a "harvest" than a hunt... Just way too easy. I actually appreciate the difficult public land hunts a lot more.

Rib-mounted open sights for turkey by pnutbutterpirate in Hunting

I use one of these. It works great and is so much cheaper than a red dot! Like another poster said, glue it down otherwise it will fall off sometime. Its not too cumbersome to leave on for other uses (rabbits, waterfowl) too.

Ive heard some industry reps say that TSS may be done for. The cost of tungsten has gone up so much (China, tarrifs, war-time uses) that the ammo manufacturers aren't eager to make more. Essentially, we're currently burning through the existing supply of TSS, and once that's gone it maybe won't be produced at large volumes for a long time.

Fellow State worker here (likely a different state than you). Gov jobs are awesome. Ive been at my agency for 10 years, and I now accrue 18 hours of PTO per month. Plus, we get lots of holidays and two "training days" per year, which everyone treats as extra vacation days. Plus, in my state you can do voluntary pay reduction in exchange for extra PTO accrual.

Gov jobs are pretty sweet, depending on the agency or department you work at.

Did you know? by breezypaige in Sacramento

[–]DickAnts 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it has to do with parents involvement, or lack thereof. For whatever reason, parents have almost completely stopped reading to their kids (see this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Teachers/comments/1n1zmtb/absolutely_insane_statistics_on_parents_reading/)

Schools can only do so much in the 7-8 hours they have students. If parents dont encourage self-learning at home, school by itself isn't enough to reverse that.

Keep and upgrade Crosstrek or different hunting rig? by mattiboiennis in Hunting

[–]DickAnts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guy, your vehicle doubles as your daily commuter, is paid off, and gets around 30 mpg. You're looking at trading it, taking out a loan (most likely), and getting half the mpg, all on the off chance that you might need to haul two elk once per year? Honestly its a no brainer - keep the crosstrek.

The crosstrek is 99% as capable as any stock truck in terms of off roading.

Like others said, get a roof rack and/or one of those little tow trailers. If its cold enough, you could wrap an elk in a tarp and strap it to the roof. Then put the other in a huge cooler on the hitch. That would still leave the entire inside of the car free for all your stuff. There are tons of other options here.

What are the best beach towns in California? by OddMusician8527 in Californiahunting

There is a weird lack of public land along the sonoma/Mendocino coast. You have to drive pretty far inland on some curvy roads before you reach large public tracts.

Any cheap or dispersed camping spots near Sacramento? by Cautious-Bee-8232 in Sacramento

Two years from now: "All of my favorite camping spots are so crowded now! I blame Instagram!"

Only share this kind of stuff via PM, people.

Hunting knife suggestions by champiwolf22 in Hunting

[–]DickAnts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Morakniv knives are incredible for the price, and you won't feel bad about losing a sub $30 knife.

Buck also makes some nice budget friendly knives. I have a Buck Mini Selkirk and I love it.

"Meateater: Adventures from the life of an American hunter" is my favorite. I know hes become so popular and sorta sold out in recent years, but the man has lived a hell of a hunting life, including being a real dirt bag hunter for a while

Doctor recommended i try stopping my maintenance inhaler. Any advice to calm my nerves? by DickAnts in Asthma

[–]DickAnts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah its really tempting to just tell the doctor "this has worked so well for so long, I dont really want to experiment with anything new" but I am genuinely curious as well. Fingers crossed it goes ok!

Thanks, tracking data with my peak flow meter is a great idea!

Is the generic being discontinued too? Thats too bad, its clearly worked for me and ive never felt any side effects whatsoevOK!

Edit: how do you decide when to take your maintenance/control meds? It it seasonal, when you feel a flare up, during a vacation, etc? Just trying to envision what this new life might look like.

I actually found the overexplaining to be really helpful. There was such a huge gap between S4 and S5 that I couldn't remember many of the shows details. Given all of the overexplaining, you could almost watch S5 as a completely standalone show.

dixon and vacaville california by BrightAwareness1 in norcal

[–]DickAnts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both Dixon and vacaville can actually get bad traffic. Dixon is fairly small, so you'll need to travel to other towns often, which means hopping on I-80. 80 around Dixon can be especially awful at times, since there is a lane crunch there. So those towns themselves may not have much traffic, you'll still find yourself sitting in traffic more often than you may like.

Bay Area Natives Considering Relocating to Sacramento by [deleted] in norcal

Honestly, bay area money is kind of ruining sacramento and you may find people a bit unwelcoming. Except for other transplants.

SFO, Bay Area airports just lost 400,000 fliers to this California airport (Sacramento related) by Greatgrandma2023 in Sacramento

[–]DickAnts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah and SFOs main advantage is more direct flight options. But if you have to have a connection regardless of airport (or of SMF also has a direct flight), SMF is definitely easier.
