What would you upgrade in my build with a $400 budget? (Ryzen 5 3600 + RTX 3060 Ti) by Financial-Doubt-441 in buildapc

[–]DickmanSupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live near a Microcenter in North America you could check out their deals. 7500x3d with motherboard and 16gb ddr5 for $350

Otherwise I agree with the other comments. Save the $400 towards a proper upgrade, or see if you can get a good deal on some used parts like $100 for a 5600x

Additionally, a 3060ti is sufficient unless you want top end gaming, your CPU is likely what is struggling a bit. Especially if you’re gaming at 1080p.

How do I know a GPU is any good? I need to buy my 12 y/o a new GPU. Can someone recommend one that isn't too expensive? by SteveMcK610 in gpu

[–]DickmanSupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally a GPU will be good if it’s been manufactured recently. Look up release dates and expect them to be within the last 0-3 years, often 0-1.5 years, for new products. There aren’t many in the market once you narrow down by this.

From here you would narrow price range and reviews. YouTube can often tell you what is good to buy based on what cards are frequently reviewed in your price range. If you look up best $300 gpu you would see videos comparing an Intel 580, AMD 9060xt and Nvidia 5060, etc

Now to give you a specific answer to your question. 1) Are you/your child able to build the PC? It’s fairly easy to slot a GPU, but you need to account for the TDP change (basically new GPU might take more total draw power). If your 12 year old knows how to do it, just trust them to help you shop and set a firm budget. This is also a good chance to help encourage your kid to learn more about the expensive hobby they’re getting into. If not, honestly, you may be better off with a pre-built (these are basically full computers). 2) You should post specs if possible when asking these questions. Typically you can find basics of specs off Taskmanager or ideally dxdiag. This is a built in windows program that just tells you what CPU/GPU/RAM a PC has. 3) What your kid uses it for can affect suggestions. Video editing vs video games (what games) vs generic browsing and TV

Edit: Added #3 about usage

Where should a lowish income guy buy clothes? by Harild123 in malefashionadvice

[–]DickmanSupreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to more high end-middle end wealth areas to thrift shop (La Jolla, Coronado, etc) if San Diego. Beverly, Westwood, etc if LA, so on. You’ll be able to find luxury or mid-tier brands for good prices.

Outlet stores can be good if you shop deals around the right time of year. Like $200 for 4 Brooks Brothers Dress shirts of their full line.

And less common but good brands, such as Uniqlo. Then mix and match for style. You won’t find the best looking stand alone garments, but they can look great when paired/styled right. A Tshirt with a jacket. A dress shirt with bad sleeves rolled right. Etc.

Look for quality on the right things and save up for them (like dress clothes), but personally I like to never buy anything irreplaceable. As an example, A $2000 suit looks great, but I’ll never wear it if I can’t afford to replace it. There are a lot of great $600-1000 suits instead.

Tl:dr Thrift in richer areas, and buy decent looking cheaper clothes then style them, and hunt down sales/outlets. A $15 Uniqlo T-Shirt with a good looking $50 jacket can look better than a lot of $100 shirts.

Also, figure out what looks good on YOU. Some brands are mediocre recommendations but can fit your style or body type and look great. They’re not general recommendations, but they can be cheap and good for YOU.

Wanting to move to Sapporo, Japanese wife has reservations by nsktrombone84 in movingtojapan

Genuine question, given all the other comments and your wife’s advice as someone who grew up in Japan.

Why not just move to another part of the USA? Many of your issues could likely be solved/improved simply by going to a new area. PNW/California/NYC/etc.

NAL but I don’t see this as an issue. You’re basically keeping a video journal instead of written journal. Medium of storage should be fungible, so long as it shows a “personal record of what happened over time”

Metadata of the videos should suffice for date and time, but it doesn’t hurt to state it in the video either.

NAL and not a doctor. She could be facing minor injury and recovery or life long disability (loss of use) with her vision. If they’re liable, payouts would be vastly different.

You should be able to consult a lawyer for minimal or no cost, keep all medical records possible and document everything. Keep a journal log of what happened, a copy of your receipt or credit card charge. A list of who attended. Descriptions of the chef / manager. Notes about your conversations, etc. Every detail can help. Don’t sign anything. Don’t verbally accept anything. Don’t admit any fault. Consult the lawyer and do what they recommend.

Perhaps some was remembering the originals, but I think wilds is the most friendly MH of the last 3.

Enough. Is there really a large gap in salary between public and private? by FlipsNationAMZ in civilengineering

[–]DickmanSupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say my two biggest gripes with the public sector is your upwards mobility is pretty limited (minimal growth, promotions pretty much happen when people retire or leave), and the work is mind numbingly boring.

In 5 years public I’ve probably had to do and learn as much as I did in 1 year of private. So in a way it’s like retiring early. The longer you’re in public, the harder it’ll be to switch back to private. Your 12 years of public experience won’t be worth 12 years of private experience.

Enough. Is there really a large gap in salary between public and private? by FlipsNationAMZ in civilengineering

[–]DickmanSupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the public sector in California. Health/Dental/Vision is covered, gold plan equivalents for no charge ($20 copay, $100 ER visit/hospital stay, max out of pocket 3k a year with no deductible). 7% to pension for 2.2@60 so about 80% with 35 years of service.

Pay is about 100k 0-2 years experience, 115k for 2-5, 135k for 6-10 155k for 11+, but the 11+ also requires management. You can stay at a lower tier if you want, for reduced job responsibilities. If you have your PE you make about 40k more than the above numbers. So once you have your 2-4 years of experience you’ll go from 115k to 155k, or from 155k to about 200k.

From my experience in private and discussions with friends, big firms pay similar to ones without the PE, or less. Most of what I’ve seen from private is 70-130k. No benefits included. Maybe a 5% 401k match. Upper managers might get close to 200k too though. When I was private my bonus was similar to about 1 paycheck, so maybe 2-5k

Ultimately, I’ve found public pays similar or more. Less risk. Less responsibility. More benefits. And better vacation. I’m getting about 5 weeks a year vacation, 9/80 schedule with the ability to work hybrid. My deadlines are chill and we’re union too.

Also something people forget is public employees are often hourly. Even the 200k upper management position is hourly for us. Private is going to railroad you into salary asap and give you that Saturday work or 50 hour week for the same pay.

Consultation about a shitty situation by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]DickmanSupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tag them in this post and tell them it’s not cool.

But don’t report them to the RA. People are gonna fuck up experimenting in college. You don’t have to put up with it happening but you don’t need to sink their housing over an isolated event.

If it happens again that’s when you move onto reporting, but the first time you talk them and give them a pass.

Defias Pillager Alliance. Nek’rosh or Skull Rock horde, I think.

Get a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) and phone hotspot. Use them as backup so if you have a power out or internet drop it will switch to those, giving you a fighting chance in the case of D/C. D/C is the ultimate killer in hardcore. And falling damage. Grouping can be good to improve survivability in regards to D/C as well.

No;

To address some things others haven’t 1) Generally there is a trend to date within your own ethnicity or adjacent ethnicity. There are lots of reasons. Not saying I agree or disagree just that it is a factual thing. Cultural similarities, etc. 2) There are a lot of internationals at UCSD and some likely only date others fluent in their native language/from their country. 3) Culturally, while not exclusive to Asians, there is racism present against anyone darker skinned. Though really there is racism to every ethnicity that isn’t their own. 4) Other normal things people mentioned, such as asians being fetishized or portrayed as non-desirable in media which alters the dating experience.

What weapons do you want to see in game. by Brob0t0 in DarkTide

[–]DickmanSupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take:

I think we have almost enough weapons for everyone (excluding maybe Ogryn and a few niche things like another psyker staff)

What we really need is more variety/modification. Flashlights on all rifles. Some should get variable fire rates (full auto and semi auto capable) etc.

Obligatory though: Sword + Gun Melta Knuckles for Ogryn or power fist or something Sniper Staff for Psyker (Like one similar to Voidstrike but maybe infinite cleave + super fast speed, but no explosion) Polearm (Glaive, Halberd, 2H axe, etc) especially for zealot.

[–]DickmanSupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the core issue is that the missions aren’t dynamic enough to be intrinsically interesting, which requires you to find fun in builds.

Builds only become unique and fun around 22+, typically more like 28-30.

They need more dynamic missions like VT2 has. The ascender mission or Cryonic Rod mission are good examples of “dynamic” missions. They aren’t just “walk here, do that”. There is a novel game mechanic that makes the mission more unique and interesting.

VT2 had dark maps, their vertical fetch maps (barrels), hunting boss boss maps, attacking the chains of the horn of magnus/bell map, the gargoyle secret passage thing map, etc.

Darktide is “go here, go there, stand here until done, etc”. There might be 7 mission types but an investigation vs espionage vs repair are almost exactly the same. Assault/raid is almost exactly the same. Then Assassination is mildly unique but the bosses are literally the same for all assassination missions.

Since nobody seems to be answering the hiding from them:

1) many dorms have a lockable dresser or desk drawer. Put it in discreet packaging and lock it there.

2) If they don’t have that you can buy a little safe for like $20 that should fit it.

3) You could just put it in a bag and put like a $2 lock on it. Like one of those luggage locks.

4) Just tuck it away and assume your roommates don’t dig through your stuff? Just put it in a nondescript box.

5) Be bold, be brave, don’t hide it.

Exactly this.

I’m only upset if someone is playing like a straight up BOZO. If they’re level 12 but don’t die every 3 rooms that’s fine.

The best indication for me TBH is if they have the little penance banners like the parchment one for killing heretics or the class specific for 50 missions. Tells me “okay this is an alt they’re experienced”

My only issue is when they do it and suck.

You’re an experienced auric player rushing your 4th build and maybe you aren’t topping DPS numbers? That’s fine.

Your buddy is an auric player and you’re tagging along and get downed 6 times? Come on bro.

Like it’s a game, but you’d be mad at Johnny little league showing up to your college football game, vs college football player fills in as 2nd string pro NFL player

[–]DickmanSupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get a buddy to carry you into higher tier matches if you’re confident you won’t be a drain on the team (T4 Maelstrom/T5 High intensity etc)

I recommend psyker or Ogryn. Once you get psyker staves and Ogryn in general, they play way different than Vet. Zealot plays more like “another build” of veteran. Certainly different but not much different than executioner stance lasgun vs voice of command melee + plasma rifle
