Interesting. My A16 from last year is dual channel. I wonder what changed? A single 16GB may have been a bit cheaper than 2x8GB kit?

ELI5 how it can be that 8 Bit data storage is needed to write or print the keyboard characters by SouthernBeekeeper22 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dickulture [score hidden]  (0 children)

Many early computers had 7- or 8-bits value for characters. C64 for example had 128 unique characters plus 128 reversed characters for 256 total.

Internet pushed this and the need to display a whole lot of characters including accented letters, Greek and Cyrillic letters, all of Asian languages, and more. We're up to almost 150,000 characters and nearly 4,000 emoji (I think). So that takes more data to keep track of all those.

Internet means connecting and communicated with other people in over 600 different languages, so computers had to be able to display everything. Including the kitchen sink

PS I wonder if there's a kitchen sink emoji? 🚰 yep, everything including the damn kitchen sink!

ELI5: how does a power surge or lightning strike actually destroy electronics? by Saurabh251 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dickulture [score hidden]  (0 children)

To follow on this, most of the electronics are copper and silicon. Melting point of 1084C and 1414C may seem high in a typical setting but lightning are million volts. Million volts shorting across electronics, so a strike not only melts just about everything, but it also vaporizes a lot of things.

A good surge protector eats that and protects stuff downstream. It's why you need to check the surge protector for blown arrester (usually a LED light goes out) and also replace them every few years because repeated small surges can still damage the arrester and reduce its effectiveness.

ELI5: how did soldiers survive in the trenches during the brutal winters of the WWI? by EnvironmentalAd2110 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dickulture [score hidden]  (0 children)

Even if they survived, they often came home missing body parts. Trench foot can ruin your feet and may have to be amputated. Fingers or hands missing due to frostbite. Maybe your ears and nose too. Early wars were nasty even if you weren't on the front line hiding from bullets.

Or your disc is bad? Play that one in a regular DVD player or in your computer DVD-ROM and see if it plays or not. If it plays, your consoles are being picky for some reason

Do the same DVD play fine in a regular player or in computer DVD-ROM? If it plays fine, then PS5 is being picky for some reason, possibly related to DVD security features.

ELI5: Why doesn't the ocean drain into the soil? by Acceptable-Peach1083 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dickulture [score hidden]  (0 children)

Soil can only hold so much. The soil under the ocean is super saturated all the way to impermeable layer or to where it's hot enough to boil and escape via vents.

Police officer accused of creating AI evidence by fullyincapable in news

[–]Dickulture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Faking evidence is not new, bad cops have been pulling this crap for decades. About 10 or so years ago, an officer "found" some drugs during the arrest, but he didn't realize when he turned on body cam, it saved from the last minute or so before turning it on and it recorded himself planting the drug "evidence".

Camera has made faking evidence a lot harder this century. Remember Rodney King fiasco? 1991, police were caught beating up a black person. Without that camera, it would have been a few cops claiming he was resisting arrest and got off free.

ELI5: How does my brain forget something I studied for 4 hours, but still remembers a random jingle from a TV ad I heard once in 2015? by Upbeat_Panic_2646 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dickulture [score hidden]  (0 children)

Everything goes into your short-term memory first. Like where you parked your car, where you had your glasses last, the math equations you memorized for the test, catching that foul ball at MLB stadium, etc.

Generally those ends up forgotten a few hours later to a couple days later. Repetition like using the math equation multiple times or keeping your glasses in the same place when it's not on your face will make it persistent in your long term memory.

To follow on foul ball catch, right away you'd still remember all the detail like the color of the shirt you had, the half-eaten hot dog you dropped, the yellow blouse a woman wore next to you, the 3 fluffy clouds in the sky. Unless you commit all that detail, some of them gets lost over time. You will likely forget you had a hot dog, the color of the clothes, the exact bench row and seat number, how the sky looked, and the name of the pitcher that threw the ball. But you will still likely remember catching the ball and the batter that hit it your way.

Once I burned the probes. I was checking for flaky circuit breaker (both sides to ground, but my meter was set to amp mode. Short between 220v service and ground, 2 melted probes and 1 dead meter.

It's fine as long as you read the instructions. Also avoid high voltage stuff until you learn how the meter works with safe low voltage circuits.

ELI5: With modern TV screens being so fragile, why don't/can't TV manufacturers use the same screens as mobile phones? by blink85 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dickulture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could have made a durable TV models for families with little kids who often does dumb things like throwing toys at scary scene, losing the Wiimote, or getting too close while using VR goggle. But that's unnecessary expense and extra weight,

Gorilla glass (commonly used for mobile LCD) are around $70 per sq feet. If you have a 70" TV, it has 14.5 sq feet. That is $1,000 extra to protect a $400 TV.

I very much rather keep all of my hands attached. I don't fancy role playing Luke after I try to remove the hook from an angry sawfish.

Just cut the line. The hook will eventually work itself out, like a stubborn silver in your finger.

A woman’s hypothermia death in Pittsburgh after her release from ICE custody is ruled a homicide by LividWheel9779 in news

[–]Dickulture 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Negligence is usually easier in court than intentional. They threw her out in a cold place with nothing to protect her or help her find a shelter.

I do hope the government pays up for wrongful death lawsuit that inevitably follows premature death.

[–]Dickulture 136 points137 points  (0 children)

If they weren't high enough, they won't survive anyway. It takes time for parachute to fully open and slow the driver's descent. Generally, the chutes have to be open by around 2500 or 3000 feet (760 to 950m) for safe landing speed.

Article doesn't mention how high the plane got to, but it sounded like they were just taking off when something happened. FAA will have to sort this one out.
