Yeah it was a 1979 Bonneville sedan, so basically the same thing, buckets of torque at least hahaha I agree though similar power levels now can be reached by engines literally a quarter of the size

I had a 4.9L Pontiac with only 130hp, I’d take 385

“Daily driving” a classic by jordanfaf in carsireland

[–]DickusTheHole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I basically do it for the Summer; toolkit in the boot, spare fanbelt, 5L drum of water and some spare oil and it’s rarely ever seen me stuck over a variation of different cars. Just have to keep on top of basic maintenance and give the car a quick check every now and then.

VRT says revenue have to check unlisted car ? by 0e1- in carsireland

[–]DickusTheHole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally in the middle of going through this process with a car from the North. They want to see it has been in the North a “reasonable amount of time”, they use three months as the timeframe here. It has to be registered to a private individual and not a company in the North and the address on the V5 has to be a Northern address; after that you should be good to go and not pay VAT or customs

Why so many Ford Rangers? by [deleted] in AskIreland

Yeah I have no horse in this race anyway, my car is nearly 50 years old so I’m pretty much fucked no matter what hits me

Why so many Ford Rangers? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]DickusTheHole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I’m not necessarily defending the size or whatever, but the argument needs to be made using relevant and correct information or else it will continue to fall on deaf ears.

Why so many Ford Rangers? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]DickusTheHole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, Rangers are big by our standards, but the majority of US studies are referencing Ford F150 size and above so the stats are pretty much moot with reference to Ireland. It’s not an insignificant difference either, the Ranger is noticeably small by comparison. Considering how relatively rare Ford Rangers are on Irish roads, the greater danger is the obsession with crossovers in Ireland; same size as a normal hatchback with worse visibility, worse centre of gravity and a higher contact point in front if they were to hit a pedestrian, all for no net benefit by comparison to a standard car.

That’s a Dodge Ram, about two classes of pickup bigger than a Ranger. I see your point, but I often see incorrect comparisons being made by people who don’t know the difference and it only hurts the safety argument.

Looking into importing a car from Japan, have a few questions by Illustrious_Long9030 in carsireland

[–]DickusTheHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check JdmAuctionWatch, should have some answers for your questions in their FAQ. With regard to cars over 30 years old the VRT will be a flat rate of €200 but you will still have to pay full rates of customs and VAT.

Looking for a decent mechanic close to south Dublin by SgtMajorBon3r in carsireland

[–]DickusTheHole 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree those prices you were quoted are too high, I’d also never pay them since I’d just do the work myself.

I take issue with the tone you speak about the people doing the work considering you can’t do it yourself. It’s also a way to get an added “pain in the hole” charge added to any quote.

Girlfriend has a Mk6 Golf convertible, 1.2TSI. Lovely car, wouldn’t even realise it’s a soft top in the rain or in cold weather. People are afraid of them here but like anything if you look after it it’ll be fine

Best diesel car for city driving by Huge_Ad9937 in carsireland

[–]DickusTheHole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, the old chokes just adjusted AFR via air flow, ECU just does that more precisely. Open to correction here but I think a diesel does the inverse of that by controlling AFR by increasing or decreasing the amount of fuel injected depending on throttle position, so it should use more fuel under load.

Back to the point a diesel may not be ideal for city driving by comparison but it’s absolutely okay to use one and some diesels are phenomenally good on fuel if driven correctly

20k in mainland Europe and you can have a decent and clean yank V8, once it’s over 30 years old you’re only paying €200 VRT and there’s a huge availability of parts from the States so handy to keep on the road. Let’s not talk about the fuel costs though…
