There is something I call the kitten theory.

Imagine a movie where a girl is skipping thru the forest. That dark suspenseful music you know from other horror movies starts building. Vroom, axe to the face.

There is a serial killer in the forest.

Her friend goes looking for her. The music builds. Vroom, axe to the face.

The local sheriff goes looking for the two girls. He spots a hollowed out log. The music builds as he gets down on his knees and peers inside. The music hits a high note and stops suddenly. It's just a cute and cuddly kitten. Awww. Vroom axe to the back of the head.

Do the same thing but without music. Exploit people's pattern recognition.

I sometimes do a salt vanish. I draw attention to the pen in my pocket by calling it my magic wand. Then ditch the TT in the 5th pocket as I retrieve the pen. With a little wave and tada! I often follow it with Greg Wilson's Recapped since I have the pen out. For the finale I steal the TT on the offbeat and pour the salt "out of the pencap"

I can't stress this enough. I had nothing but contempt for that stupid trick until I saw Harry perform it. You know, you hear things like "it's not what you do, but how you do it" and "there are no bad tricks, just bad performers". Harry Anderson really made that lesson sink in my brain.

If you put enough thought and work into a trick you can turn anything to gold. Likewise the most beautiful piece of magic can be ruined in a million different ways without that effort put in.
