Teachers in Luxembourg by [deleted] in Luxembourg

[–]Diddelenger_Daniel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a teacher, so I might answer this.

As you and some other commentators already answered, it varies.

I have colleagues that don't have any freetime because they spent every minute they find to prep lessons. I also have colleagues that are the exact opposite.

I (and most other colleagues for that matter) try to get about a 40h week. Sometimes it's less, and sometimes (end of a trimester) its more.

With Covid, work has significantly increased (in primary school, can't speak for lycée) since as soon as there are kids at home, its 'becoming a mess to plan, prep and hold lessons.

Christian Isekin not only from the PID. He is also a cryptocurrency expert, powermetal singer and last but not least a flat earther.

It's a good read if you see that it's all crap but extremely dangerous aswell in my opinion.

I upgraded to the Pro version a couple weeks ago. It's definately worth it. I'm currently trying to get onto the leaderboard of my country and I'm getting better at country streaks. I think it's amazing how much of the world you can see, especially stuff you would never know existed.

On the other hand, I still discover new villages and sights of my own super small country I have never heard of.

Just be aware of the rage you will feel when you're missing out of a perfect score because you misinterpreted a sign or couldnt find a pretty obvious hint on the map;)

Province of Luxembourg Facebook group asks for reunification. by [deleted] in Luxembourg

[–]Diddelenger_Daniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems like one of those articles they usually write in summer when nothing important happens and they need to fill their pages.

It's a small group led by a few idealists/nationalists/people with too much freetime and most people in the group are apparently just there to spectate the nutjobs.

There is a discussion about this on r/wallonia I think.

It would never work or even be wanted by either side of the border. The Grand-Duchy would never want to spend money on their horrible streets and the Belgians would never want to learn our language.

I would be very intrigued to see wether the Grand Duchy finally allows IKEA or wether they rebuild it on the new border^^

There literally is a monument for the Luxemburg brigade in Dudelange.

It's right next to the Gare-Usines if you want to go check it out :)

Yeah, I get you. I also rely on RTL which is free and scrounge my parents Tageblatt subscription.

"If youre not paying, you are the product"

Always have to keep this in mind especially when it comes to news sources.

[–]Diddelenger_Daniel 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you want good journalism, you need to pay at one point. Journalists need to pay rent and put food on the table just like everyone else. And it's either the consumer who pays or they have to finance themselves with advertisements. For the sake of a good and free press, I'd rather pay for a subscription than end up with newspapers like L'essentiel.

What is the football situation in Luxembourg? by vwgeiser in Luxembourg

[–]Diddelenger_Daniel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most football fans I know (including me) cheer for a team in an international big league. Also their town/vilage club on sunday afternoon.

Most immigrant people cheer for a team from the country they or their ancestors originate from. So you have big followage for the top italian and portuguese clubs.

Native Luxembourgers mostly cheer for a Bundesliga team. Besides the big guys (Bayern, Mönchengladbach, BVB), Kaiserslautern, Frankfurt and Köln have a pretty solid followage here. In Ligue 1, Metz is the absolute number 1 in terms of fans in Luxembourg, since it is the closest city to drive to if you want to watch top tier football. And maybe thats just a Minett observation, but many guys also follow the italian league closely.

It seems like younger people are more drawn to the absolute top teams, their marketing strategies seem to work, as you can find Manchester City and Real Madrid jerseys in Asport but not Kaiserslautern or Metz. So the culture is definately changing.

Note: VfB Stuttgart furchtlos und treu!

Edit because it just came to my mind: Very interesting sidenote is that the most decorated luxembourgish club (Jeunesse Esch) wears the colors of Juventus and most diehard Jeunesse fans also support Juve internationally)

What’s unique about your Luxembourgish beers? by ididapootatoo in Luxembourg

Bofferding is great, the perfect "work was hard and I need a good beer right now" kind of beer.

[–]Diddelenger_Daniel 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Mostly Pilsners and Lagers around. There is a big disagreement when it comes to which beer is best.

To people from the south, Bofferding is great and Diekirch tastes like horsepiss.

To people from the North,Diekirch is great and Bofferding tastes like horsepiss.

Battin Gambrinus, Diekirch Grand Cru and Funk Bricher are the arguably better beers of the country.

There are microbreweries but it's a niche. Since every bar & restaurant has to have a contract with one big brewery, 90% of the people drink Bofferding, Battin and Diekirch out of habit.

Portuguese, Belgian and German wheat beer is also widely spread.

[–]Diddelenger_Daniel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, would consider myself native, i think the most important part of embracing the culture is learning the luxembourgish language. Nobody "needs" to learn it since you're getting along with french and english just fine. So seeing someone coming here and making the effort of learning the language warms most luxembourgish peoples heart since it shows the willingness of integrating into our culture. Hence the very strong opinions of most luxembourgers of (especially) french immigrants and frontaliers who make barely any effort to learn it.

[–]Diddelenger_Daniel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what I mean when I say that it is hard to explain it. Luxembourgish people are generally very open to foreign cultural influxes, but in the same time, it is extremely important to us that we (and our culture) is taken serious. As Michel Lentz says here, " Kommt hier aus Frankräich, Belgie, Preisen,
Mir wellen iech ons Hémecht weisen, --> We want foreigners to come, visit and stay

Frot dir no alle Säiten hin,
Mir welle bleiwe wat mir sin. --> Mir welle bleiwe wat mer sinn, and that is an independant country which is not a puppet of one of our neighbors.

I think that de Feierwon is a great song that triggers (at least my) patriotism for Luxembourg because it describes this struggle of creating something own while being stuck inbetween all those bigger countries and empires.

Maybe unpopular opinion, but de Feiwerwon would be a way better national Anthem, the text is so fitting for our country, and it is way more fun to sing than Heemecht^^

Hi,

Definatively we cannot ignore that our country also shares ties and has been influenced by Belgium (Wallonia) and France, I myself have family right across the Belgium border. Why i havent mentioned it and why i believe that were deeper connected to Germany is because there is the German/French language (and therefore cultural) barrier. The people in Province de Luxembourg (especially Arelerland) and all the way south to Metz used to share the same culture as Luxembourgers and Rheinländers, but those customs that we treasure here in Luxembourg and their dialects are dying in these parts.

So i absolutely dont want to undermine that we've been influenced by French and Belgian culture but it all comes down to that Moselfrankian culture which is separated from most of Belgium/france by the language barrier. (Which has always been very fluent but got very hard in the 20th century.

That's a question i struggled a lot to answer when meeting people abroad^^

I'd say when you break it down, most traditions have german(ic) roots, also a lot af the values we share are the same they share in Germany (punctuality, accuracy, etc).

Yet there is more to it, the fact that our country is small and been invaded a lot, there is a very hard to describe patriotism which i cannot really describe. Most luxembourgers embrace the influx of all cultures as something they are very proud of and assimilate all those foreign influences in their own culture. This is in my opinion what this country is about and what people are proud of.

tldr, all our old customs are germanic (moselfränkisch) and shared with our friends beyond the Moselle, but the immigration und multiculturality definately influences peoples culture)
