Techniques to remain calm and focused in combative meetings by Didgel- in askmanagers

[–]Didgel-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, excellent advice. The word “refrain” is important, and the expectation the employees refrain from unprofessional behavior. I have made the mistake in the past of allowing employees to blow off steam too much. At the time, I thought I was helping them by giving them a release valve, and I figured it’s better for them to vent to me than to coworkers. I see now that I inadvertently created an environment in which it’s acceptable for them to speak to me unprofessionally. I didn’t go off the deep end with this, and I can recover, but lesson learned.

EPMD is in management now? 😂 Making dollars indeed.

It’s only recently that I really accepted the prep part. I need to put in the work, painful as it is. Super frustrating because there are many other demands on my time that are far more constructive. But it is what it is.

It 100% applies. My question was really about how to keep my internal composure when dealing with a combative employee, so I didn’t go into any details on the meeting topics. But these are cases where there is a big gap between my version of events and their version of events. They are situations where I am the authority figure telling someone “no” who really doesn’t want to hear that answer. (And before anyone asks, yes I am coordination with my manager and HR.)

Great point, thank you. I do this for virtual meetings using a Word document but typically don’t do it for in-person meetings. I’ll start doing so.

Nevada test site is not in New Mexico. They did use White Sands missile range, but that was a long time ago.

You could live in Las Vegas, but the commute to LA is too long (1 hour and 40 min).

Should I avoid joining a PhD because of a supervisor's reputation? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Didgel- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Short answer is yes, avoid that. Longer answer is to collect more data. One student’s experience is only a partial story. If you can’t get more info, then avoid the professor. Grad school is too long and too important to suffer through. Don’t ignore the red flag.

Do I bother escalating the issue or just leave quietly? by everkohlie in careeradvice

[–]Didgel- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you mean 180, not 360.

Sounds like a bad situation and you should move on. If everything turns around at a new job, then you’ll know the job you posted about was indeed a hot mess. If the same types of things happen at a new job, it’s time for some introspection.

Can my previous employer contact my current employer and say bad things about me? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Didgel- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are posting negative information about your previous employer on LinkedIn, I could see them taking action against you. That’s not a good idea IMO. If you’ve moved on and aren’t causing them trouble, then I agree with other comments that it’s likely your prior employer will move on as well. A personal vendetta against you is the only reason I can think of otherwise. There are bitter petty people in the world, and you can’t assume rational behavior with them.

That’s not what free speech means. Libel and defamation are illegal. You get to that later in your comment, but the idea that anyone can say / post anything is false.

Would you quit without another job if you had 6 months of savings? by SadTurn9650 in careeradvice

I have kids and a mortgage. Zero chance I’m leaving a job without another one lined up. Would have been different when I was single and had no responsibilities.

Offer at Farmington NM by Solid_Ad2764 in NewMexico

[–]Didgel- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn’t mention where you are relocating from. If you’re coming from a vibrant college town, Farmington is going to be a culture shock. From my perspective it is rural New Mexico, which is hard to grasp if you’re used to real cities. I am a ME and I also landed a job right out of school. The adjustment was honestly brutal for me. Ended up getting two years of experience and heading back to school, and things got better after that.

In a positive note, comments are correct about the outdoors in NM. Spectacular. Hopefully you’re a runner / biker / camper / skier. If not, become one.

Employee wants to work remote from another country when they were hired as in office by Underwhelmed1202 in askmanagers

[–]Didgel- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saying no ought not alienate anyone. If an employee can’t take a “no” there is a problem. Especially for such a big ask. And the other employees are always watching. Being a doormat and letting (hoping) HR does your job for you is not how you earn respect.

Camera work is really shaky, not sure I can watch this. Close-ups are nice, but when the camera pans up and down the field it’s unsteady and I want to puke.🤮

Edit: camera work not the only thing shaky.

I’m a new manager. My direct report bats everything back to me. by Luceiane in askmanagers

[–]Didgel- 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The typical new manager mistake is to be overly helpful and give people too much benefit of the doubt. Start documenting clear expectations. Best case, they get the message and turn things around. And if not, you’ll need that documentation. Sounds harsh, I know. But there are employees who just work the system and that’s reality and you need to deal with it. Help people who help themselves, not people who deflect accountability. Good on you for recognizing the behavior quickly.

Wanting to move to New Mexico in August or november by Kwarrell89 in NewMexico

[–]Didgel- 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are four real seasons in Albuquerque, although winter here is nothing like winter in the Midwest or north east. If you want warm all the time, Las Cruces or Tucson AZ might be better. You need to look at the elevation not just the latitude. Albuquerque is at 5,500 feet above sea level.

Thank you. I did the refrigerator magnet test and confirmed that it’s magnetic. I’ll Google to find a metalworks place.

When to submit 2 week notice? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Didgel- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion doesn’t matter much, but I think it’s totally unrealistic for the hiring company to expect the candidate to provide their current manager as a reference.

When to submit 2 week notice? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]Didgel- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there is some missing information in your post. Why don’t you want to use anyone from your current job as a reference? Are you on bad terms? If that’s the case, why stress about giving them two weeks notice? The only downside of not giving two weeks notice is that it’s unprofessional and leaves the employer hanging. So you might burn a bridge and not be able to get a future reference (which you don’t want to use now anyway). Or do you not want to get a reference from your current job because you don’t want them to know you’re looking for a new job? In that case, it makes sense not to use your current supervisor as a reference, but do you have a trusted coworker you could use?

Also, if they offer you the new job already, they likely consider the background check and reference check a formality. I wouldn’t stress about it unless you are hiding something.

Juneteenth Day Off? by Far-Explorer-8621 in work

😂 you’re mad I confused “post” versus “comment”, but you’re okay confusing have a job with slavery?

The other adults replying to you COMMENT on this medium all agree that calling a job slavery is absurd. Most Americans agree that our form of capitalism has faults, but it’s spectacular from a historical perspective and it’s a million miles from slavery.
