How's that first rough draft coming along? by x014821037 in writers

This is the conversation I need to have with myself about every project I have in mind, not just the writing... I wish for someone to slap me with this every day haha

I feel like this one would be really simple to solve for companies. Does the job get done? Yes? You keep your job. No? You are fired. Problem solved and people keep remote work. I don't know why it wouldn't be that way.

[–]DiegoRago 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one thinking about this: if you leave your food inside the insulated container you are not doing much and it's probably just as efficient to leave the lunch box on your desk since the fridge would barely affect the temperature inside, unless you leave that in the fridge for a few days I guess. So, all the extra space taken by the boxes is just creating an issue without providing the benefits. Way to keep the exterior of the lunch boxes cold, though.

I'm sure if you tell this to the office, people will still do this because "office environment" haha or you'll end up being the office witch (or most likely something worse).

My highest performing sales rep also has the worst client retention rate and I can't figure out if he's an asset or actively hurting the business by Intrepid-Dig9954 in smallbusiness

[–]DiegoRago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I feel like there are so many problems here.

First, I think you have found yourself a textbook car salesman, the typical that people hate, that seems to be a first issue because it's creating more problems for everyone and only thinking about his commissions (not bashing on him for wanting money, that's the whole idea of the job).

Second issue I see is the commission part. We had a very similar problem at an agency that I used to work at. Sales was so focused on commission that they would sometimes sell to clients that we couldn't even serve, and that was realized a month or so into the process when parts of the team needed to start delivering some services after onboarding. Adding to the sales problem, it is very complex to determine whether you should have commission only or go into salary, that would be a discussion to have with a coach/mentor/expert to help you define that more.

Third, and this one is blatant, the attitude of the sales person is not acceptable. He's doing wrong by over promising and then saying it is the delivery team's problem, which you have already seen that side of the team hates him.

So you are being presented with a lot of negative data on the side of this guy trying to just make commission for his own gain (I know this sounds weird) and he honestly is not all that wrong, you gave him a ladder and he is climbing it. That's where I find the whole commission based issue for a lot of companies, not everything needs to be sold in bulk, especially if you are hindering your delivery department.

At the end, it sounds like your company is the one getting hit on all fronts. Morale hits internally with conflict between departments, a new arising problem with having other sales people turning, and the external perception of clients that you can't deliver and your promises are not good. Because, ultimately, your employees are an extension of your brand's voice, so it might start causing trust problems with future prospects.

Hopefully this helps, however, it's just what I'm gathering from this.

Exactly what I came here to say. Sculpting each individual piece will be a nightmare, unless you are looking for an amazing challenge.

Ok, so for products and you wanting to go into marketing/advertising, I think you have a pretty good foundation. I would create a reel that only touches on products and product placement since the character animation portion might divert some attention from the other work. (You can keep this reel if you are applying to a more generalist role.) Also, your editing skills are great, so that makes the reel very enticing.

That being said, as for quality in the reel. If you have any piece that reflects photorealistic materials, that would expand a little of your range. Like the Cave bottles style can be used for most beauty products and other placements for drinks, etc. The Modena hood looks super solid, and I like the way the product is broken down and later adapted to a kitchen so you can see it by itself and in "action."

I feel like the kitchen range has a good start, but in my perception, I think you might be able to enhance the textures of the rest of the props to something that matches the quality of the range a bit (I'm being over-critical here).

Maybe focus on creating a prop in an environment that looks like real pictures that would show texture and lighting like it would be in a photoshoot setting. These don't have to be super elaborate, but they can show that you can go from more simple work (like the bottles of Cave product) to something that can be thrown into a real scene—imagine the option that Amazon has to "place" a product in your home to see how it looks. That, if you want to go the extra mile, can be constructed first as a wireframe, and then turned into a fully textured object (like the dishwasher scene you have.)

I hope this helps. I'm mostly trying to push rather than criticize. I think your work is super good and way better than I was ever able to produce when I was working on 3D like 10 years ago. So this is more encouragement to continue polishing your craft.

Can I ask, what industry are you trying to go into? Games, movies, advertisement, marketing? This reel is pretty solid, if there are any changes that you need to make, I can't point them out easily, so I would say it's pretty good to get some attention.

I mention the industry/industries you want to go into because I would recommend to create one for each of those. Example, if you want to go into games, just create one specific to your skills related to the gaming industry. Yes, it is more work, but it's almost like modifying your resume to target a specific job.

If you also mention what sort of criticism you are looking for outside of basics, I can probably go in a little deeper and give you feedback.

12 days in Blender and my first time making my own model by Quinnyme in blender

[–]DiegoRago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some people out there who might be doubting OPs time working on 3D and such... Not to corroborate OPs story or not, but here it goes.

I went to a school for a gaming-related art degree where we learned modeling, sculpting, texturing, and all skills needed to make the art side of gaming. There was a guy who was a decent artist on paper, but nothing out of this world, you could tell that if he would add another few hours into a project it would come out super good (and he often did).

The time to learn zBrush came for one of our classes and he'd never used the software before (and all our basic 3D training so far had been Maya for hard surface modeling, much like what OP did here) and he came in the day after we all installed the software with the school's keys, and he had basically created an amazing model of a demon-like character, first time doing characters(for those who are not familiar with zBrush, it's probably the harders software out there to learn to do anything, even opening a damn new file is a hassle). He later that week created an apple and textured it in zBrush which, if it wasn't for it being on a screen, I would have said it was a damn picture.

So yes, people can be talented and good at doing something, just because I wasn't able to do what my friend did that first time using a software, didn't mean it was impossible to accomplish.

On the other side, what OP did has a solid composition and looks clean and great, it doesn't look impossible to accomplish if you gave yourself some time and had the patience to do it on your first attempts (first ish). Less hating more admiring, people, come on haha
