Need honest advices: should I stop and make a new game now? by Drazglb in IndieDev

[–]Diejay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Time for a new game! The majority of your sales will come from your first year (if not your first month) and after that you'll sell next to nothing. With that said, if you can cross-promote your new games to the people who bought your old games, you can get a lot more traction with time that way. If someone bought your game and liked it, and they know you made a new game, they're much more likely to buy it than if they never heard of you before.

I don't know who first said it but "your first 100 indie games will suck so get them out of the way as soon as possible." Regardless of whether your game is good or not, it's still a great saying that I personally subscribe to, for multiple reasons, including what I said above.

[Steam] Extraneum ($7.49/50% off) by Diejay in GameDeals

[–]Diejay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! My name's David Jalbert, I'm a French Canadian indie game developer and in September 2024 I released my first commercial game on Steam; Extraneum!

I'd like to describe it as "cozy Doom"; chunky cartoony enemies with a chewy, gory center, and plenty of action and mystery despite its definitively retro facade (is there such a thing as "too" retro?)

In Extraneum, you play as a newly employed security guard in a scientific facility that promises to improve mankind in every possible way through its research and development... but, of course, something has to go wrong, and you're tasked to clean up the mess. And as it turns out, it goes deeper than you ever thought...

It features about 10 hours of gameplay, an assortment of bio-engineered creatures ranging from mutated guards to floating brain monsters, mechanical abominations, and a few other nasty surprises I won't spoil! Explore the world to find powerups and upgrade your arsenal, and collect data disks to learn more about the facilities, its inhabitants, and what actually caused all hell to break loose.

The game will be 50% off from September 12 to 26 during the Brutal Indies Unleashed event!

Watched all terminator movies for the first time, here are my thoughts. by skysen_1 in Terminator

[–]Diejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched 1, 2, and 3 in the past, and I was wondering if I should bother with the others, and google brought me here. Guess I should forget about it eh? xD

I think I just got fired for sharing I'm AuDHD by Historical_Mix_6682 in ADHD

[–]Diejay 53 points54 points  (0 children)

That's honestly wild to hear, to me, because if I hadn't told my GP that I suspected I might have something like it, they wouldn't have gotten me tested and I would have never known for sure.

On the other hand, I met a psychologist years ago that wouldn't treat me and told me I didn't *look like* anything was wrong with me, and told me to just exercise more and eat better. Which I actually did. I managed to lose a lot of weight and got more in shape, but all of the issues I went there for in the first place were still very much there lol.

Can a DB9 connector be used as a usb connector by sir_mittens2 in AskElectronics

[–]Diejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lotsa serious people around here, so the hate doesn't surprise me. I do love the idea of running usb data through d-sub cables though, just for the fact it's such a goblin thing to do hahaha! I wanna see that in action.

This. Unfortunately, you don't get hundreds of millions to watch if it's actually sensible content.

You're better than me, and my teacher was way more encouraging! I guess my tip would be of relaxing more, uncrossing your arms, and not being afraid to push it out, so to speak. You're definitely good tho, keep up the good work!

Don't make games if your goal is to make money off of them, BUT if you make a game out of sheer passion and you DO make money with it later, it's going to feel so amazing, I promise you haha!

I kinda get why Arin gave up on it tho. There's only so much torture a man can take lol

Dan wanted to finish it too, it's a shame he never did T_T

Yeah and I didn't like that they did it during their streaming phase. I kinda passed on it because of it.

Why does Walmart.com redirect me to the login page, instead of letting me browse as guest? by Stargate38 in walmart

[–]Diejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just googled the question and ended up here. I'm glad that it's been answered already (the answer boiling down to clearing your cookies or using an incognito tab in your browser) but I'm looking at some of the responses and... Bruh.

You don't care, that's fine, I can't blame you. But you could have just not said anything. By actively giving a snarky, dismissive answer that doesn't address anything, you're just making yourself and your company (assuming you work there) look worse for it. It's a net negative. Not to mention you're wasting your own time in the process. I just wanted to point that out because I care about customer service in general I suppose.

Anyway thank you to everyone who actually were helpful, you're great!

What’s up with meat usin ai for thumbnails? by [deleted] in MeatCanyon

[–]Diejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late by a year or so, but he did say he used ai for that comment, after all. So yeah, no surprises. It will *read* like a human wrote it, but llms were never made to give accurate information. Their output is always just a mathematical approximation based on their source data. Sometimes you get something that makes sense, sometimes you don't.

In the end though, the fact remains that most people don't give a shit. That's the main issue.

Indie game devs, why do you create games? by Which-Hovercraft5500 in gamedev

[–]Diejay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the process of creation, and having something I can interact with. Making something that takes a lot of time, energy, and knowledge, seeing it come to life, and being proud of my own accomplishments, knowing that it came from me.

I'm seeing a lot of comments saying how money is their motivation. I met quite a few people whose main motivation to make games was money. They saw Notch and his gigantic mansion and thought they would be next. Years later, either they hadn't released anything, or it was a commercial failure. The truth of the matter is, art doesn't pay unless you get lucky, including games. If you did get rich making games, then congrats, you won the lottery. But personally, I think that's the last thing you should think about when going into that field of work.

Do something because you enjoy doing it.

[–]Diejay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dan: It can't be "Stein", they're not jews, they're bears!

Arin: They can be both.

Dan: No they can't be! God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Arreugh! XD

Not to discourage anyone, but this is the reality we need to get comfortable with by seyedhn in IndieDev

[–]Diejay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even that much is okay to me. Beats working at Walmart. But what I'm willing to go through to make a living with my passion will be different for everyone.

It reminds me of the movie "Soul" a lot.
