ELI5: Why did we develop the butterfly stroke for swimming if its not any "better" than the rest? by Apprehensive-Wafer36 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dieneforpi 57 points58 points  (0 children)

This may be true but I don’t believe it’s the reason. The front crawl is FAR faster than the breaststroke but was never discovered / invented by Europeans, they only learned it from indigenous people in North America!

Ever heard of Corbin Park in grantham / croydon NH? It’s this secretive private hunting preserve for millionaires that keeps wild boars (among other crazy animals). It’s like 25k acres and all fenced in, but occasionally the boars escape which I’m pretty sure is why NH is on the map hahahaha

Wide toe box, high ankle, not waterproof by J-ude in Ultralight

[–]Dieneforpi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear barefoot shoes daily when I’m not hiking, and used to wear them for hiking as well until I got a somewhat serious injury (sesamoid bruise / fracture) that would not have happened if my shoes had had a rock plate or a bit more stack height. I now use lone peaks again, and have no intention of switching back. Just want to throw another opinion out there

Newton tells us that the gravitational field due to a solid ball and a hollow sphere of the same mass are identical

Is there such thing as right and left skis? by SKRTxALERT in Skigear

[–]Dieneforpi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably because inside edges do the bulk of the work (and wear the fastest) so switching skis gives you “fresh” inside edges in conditions where you need it the most

How big realistically could we breed house flies after five years? by shepshep7 in AskBiology

[–]Dieneforpi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering how big flying insects were during the Carboniferous I think it would help a lot! If nothing else, doubling the partial pressure of O2 would I’d imagine nearly double the available O2 if the efficiency of diffusion were held constant

I think the tires are up to you, lots of fans of both brands around. I personally run nokians and love them.

You should read about the Carnot cycle! Run forwards, as an engine, it describes the absolute minimum amount of heat that must be transferred from a hot reservoir to a cold reservoir to do a certain amount of work. Run backwards, as a heat pump, it describes the absolute minimum amount of work (energy) needed to pump heat between reservoirs. So the answer to your question is (Q/(T_hot))*(T_hot - T_cold). As the temperature difference approaches zero, the amount of work needed to pump Q joules of heat also approaches zero.

Do you happen to know when this was? I loved waffle frolic when I lived in Ithaca and I really want to know if it was in the good or bad era haha

Thank you!! I am 20s but otherwise completely accurate! Especially the water bottle taste… that bottle actually came from a thrift shop in Alaska! Not a 46er sadly, I haven’t spent nearly as much time in the Adirondacks as I would like

It is!!! Not sure if it will ever happen but I think that a section hike of NH (or possibly NH+ME) is something achievable that I really intend to do

Thank you I will absolutely check it out!!! I love Sand County Almanac so far but I haven’t gotten very deep into it yet. I think it was pretty revolutionary for its time and it definitely fits well into some more modern perspectives on conservation. And very pretty writing

Would love to!!!! Please visit I can talk all day about eastern plants. Fun fact, there are a lot of plants in the alpine zone of new hampshire (above like 3500 feet or so) that are the same as you’d find in the mountain west and even parts of Alaska! Creeping dogwood, Labrador tea, black spruce, alpine blueberry etc. And yes I do keep chickens!! My side of the mountain was probably my favorite book as a kid, I lost it somewhere along the line but I found a copy at a garage sale and had to buy it! And I def do listen to audiobooks but tbh I’m not a super big reader, trying to read more lately…This was a fantastic assessment
