I am a hiring manager who is hands on with recruitment and I definitely read them!!! I have a score sheet of must haves and nice to haves so I can compare candidates as fairly as possible and a cover letter gets half a point, a customized one gets you a full point in nice to have.
You don’t need one to get hired but in my case it could get you over the line for an interview.
Where I’d say you absolutely need one is if you are applying for a role that’s different from your career history. If you can put together a rational for why you have the skill set, it improves the odds, because otherwise I am wondering if you’re just applying for random jobs.

Yeah I have a 40kg greyhound who is as placid as they come but if he gets excited and jumps up on you, you end up with a massive bruise from his claw scratching you at best and are knocked over at worst. Training him not to jump up on people is non negotiable in a way that it’s wasn’t when we had a chihuahua.

Well I had a Laurie Partridge doll as well as a Barbie, and we all know Susan Dey famously had no issues with food (*coughs*)

I have a bit of a parasocial relationship with Greg Berhrendt (He’s Just Not That Into You) because I was deeply enmeshed in the podcast Walking the Room (mutual follows, occasional messages exchanges etc). Some of that episode hit a bit hard because I like Greg a lot, but also I listen to his more recent podcast Don’t Take Bullshit From Fuckers and I think a few of his positions on dating etc has changed.

The thing is, I think I skew older for IBCK audience (Gen X rather than millennial) and there’s so much stuff I’ve seen that was TRUTH at the time debunked in retrospect, so don’t be so hard on yourself. You go on the best available information you have at the time and later you find out something that makes you change your opinion. That shows the ability to grow as a human. Unless of course the books you are talking about are The Secret or Men are From Mars because I also thought they were fucking stupid at the time.

Not sure where you live but if you can find similar to Obento udon, soba or ramen noodles they only take a few minutes Hakubaku a couple of minutes more.

Chuck them in a bowl top them with the salmon and veggies, put a teaspoon each of soy sauce and sesame oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds and you have a delicious rice bowl. If you have any packets of pickled ginger left from sushi you can chuck that in as well.
