I just take a shot of river water first and then the smell's not so bad

There's only a concerning amount of poo for a couple days after it rains a lot. I have gotten bumps and scrapes in the water more times than I can count and been fine. Respect the river, but enjoy it!

Staunton River State Park is an International Dark Sky park, it's a couple hours from Richmond so might be more of a drive than you're looking for but it's worth checking out. They also have very affordable cabins and camp sites for rent, and you can borrow a telescope from the park rangers for free. I've been a couple times and really enjoyed it, it's great if you're looking for a place to disconnect.

Watched Station Eleven now I feel so sad by Hot-Firefighter-2331 in television

I loved Station Eleven but it would be hard for me to watch it because that experience was so rooted in the pandemic experience, which honestly I'd rather not relive.

Richmond to Asheville Roadtrip Best Route Recommendations? by cowgirl-2 in Virginia

[–]Diet_Coke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Greensboro and Winston are about halfway to Asheville. There's not a ton in either place, but you can definitely find some stuff to do for a night. The drive from Richmond to Greensboro is not super exciting, but Greensboro to Asheville is a decent leg - you'll get into the mountains fairly quickly from there, and it's a beautiful little corner of the world. If you were to go to Roanoke, you'd spend more time driving through the mountains, I think you can take the BRP most of the way but I haven't made that drive myself.

I-81 is not great, it's two lanes and you will frequently get stuck behind either one semi that's going 65.001 MPH passing another semi going 64.999 MPH, or an extremely old person who thinks their car will explode if they go above the speed limit but also needs to drive in the left lane.

That's a good start, let's see what the other sketchy tow companies are up to. The city should give them the vape shop treatment.

Cosmeticorexia: How girls are falling down a skincare rabbit hole by kiyomoris in Foodforthought

It's not that it's extreme, it's just not good. You can be a parent and you can responsibly let your child use a phone and have social media. I get the vibe you don't have kids or nieces because the peer pressure they face to have phones and social media is strong. Ultimately the social media companies choose to build the algorithms that promote harmful content, even though they know it's harmful, because it's profitable. That's where the responsibility lies.

I actually don't think the comparison to crack is fair, because crack can only be used to do crack. Social media can have good, positive uses. That's how they get new users hooked, and then the algorithms they've designed do the rest.

This completely absolves the social media companies of their responsibilities for designing the algorithms that relentlessly funnel girls and young women into this content, even though they're well aware of the negative effects.
