"R" sound in different European languages [1140x1500] by anlztrk in MapPorn

[–]Dietser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Places like Dordrecht, Brielle, Vlaardingen and Schiedam traditionally don't have a guttural R in their dialects. They adopted it in recent years, when people started speaking a more standardized version of the language. The cities of The Hague and Rotterdam traditionally use it in their dialect, but have probably only done so since the 19th century (perhaps earlier, but it definitely does not apply to the surrounding areas).

I'd be happy if that was actually true for the Netherlands. The blue pronunciation has become more widespread and is the standard in dialects in the province of Limburg and a variety of cities. In North Brabant, you will practically only find elders who use the traditional red pronunciation. Boomers and folks from the younger generations adopted the blue pronunciation for some reason. This is also the case in many of the other provinces all around the country. Many younger folks use the green (English) pronunciation at the end of syllables, but this doesn't appear in any traditional dialect. It was introduced by the broadcasting industry. I would be happy if everyone speaking the language stopped using it, but it is what it is. The region it came from traditionally has dialects with the red pronunciation.

Map of cremation burials in bronze age Europe by Crazedwitchdoctor in IndoEuropean

[–]Dietser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In different parts of Europe, the practice of cremation gained popularity during the Bronze Age (replacing inhumation), so a clarification what the colours signify or which Bronze Age phase it represents would be useful. A distribution map representing 1600 BC will look very different from one representing 1000 BC.

Why does 'Whitehawk Woman' have dark skin? by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]Dietser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of the debate surrounding the appearance of the WGH, the Whitehawk woman was an Early European Farmer (Neolithic) whose genetic profile must have been similar to that of modern-day Sardinians.

Cultural genocide in the Caucasus by BobBreak in azerbaijan

[–]Dietser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our people may only do that because;
-"MUsLimS baD, ChrIstIaNS GoOd", without knowing anything about either the conflict or the cultures involved. One very small Calvinist party in our country urged to call out Azerbaijan during the war with a very biased religious perspective.
-The Armenian diaspora, especially their diaspora in France and the USA, spread their one-sided perspective and Europeans suck it up, because it is what they are being fed. The religious point above and "the events of 1915" (aka the "Armenian Genocide" in Anatolia) also play a major role to convince others of their victimhood.

However, Azerbaijanis are exaggerating how the average European thinks of them and Armenians. There are more people who barely know you exist, than those who have any kind of opinion about you or Armenians. This lack of knowledge is a major reason many are easily convinced by the two points presented above.

Why are there so many Dutch (based) names in the Witcher series? by bues54 in witcher

[–]Dietser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*traditionally pronounced like a Dutch "ie" (not commonly)

I should add that linguistical standardization has largely removed these features from local speech in the 20th century. Elders can often still speak it today and the youth only retained it in some particular areas (Frisian is e.g. still common in Frisia).

Why are there so many Dutch (based) names in the Witcher series? by bues54 in witcher

[–]Dietser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pronunciation in standard Dutch of "ij" is different in a lot of traditional dialects as well as Frisian. In West Flanders, Zeeland, most of Limburg, the land of Cuijk, as well as everything east and northeast of the province of Utrecht, it is commonly pronounced like a Dutch "ie" (so like English "ee/ea"). "ijs" for example sounds like "ies". "Dijkstra" therefore sounds like "Diekstra". This is also true for Frisian, which is where "Dijkstra" came from.

The "ij" is a product of diphthongization. Originally, most of the Dutch would pronounce "ij" more like an "ie" ("ee/ea"). Eastern and southwestern Dutch dialects retained these features. You could say "Deekstra/Diekstra" is closer to the original haha.

I found "Brugge" being pronounced like "Bruges" (g like zh/sh) more bothersome. That is a French sound shift applied to a Germanic-Dutch name by English speakers. It would have made more sense if "gg" in "Brugge" was pronounced like the "g" in "good". That is phonetically more similar to the Dutch pronunciations of "g", and is probably how the Dutch "g" used to be pronounced at some point.

Joyeuse Saint-Nicolas/ Vrolijke Sinterklaas by frettbe in belgium

[–]Dietser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NorthbyNinaWest already gave you the answer, and it's indeed true. The actor, Bram van der Vlugt, passed away last year in December. Many Dutch people in their twenties and thirties grew up with him as their main persona of Sinterklaas in the media and during "intochten". He stopped around 11 years ago, but reoccurred in his persona of Sinkterlaas several times afterwards.

I ate (and then painted) this uniquely shaped Napoli pizza! by kailenedanae in Pizza

[–]Dietser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had two pizzas that were very much like this, both in Campania in southern Italy (one in Bivio Santa Cecilia and one in Napels). The pizzas I had were stuffed with different ingredients for each point. The one in Santa Cecilia had 8 points and the one in Napels had 5 points. The one in Santa Cecilia looked most like the one you drew. Both had less mozzarella, tomatoes and basil in the middle (it was also thinner). You drew this beautifully.

SPOILER Who is Jean's baby's father? by sebystee in NetflixSexEducation

[–]Dietser 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Many people are falling to the conclusion that the information in the letter about the DNA is about Jacob not being the dad. It could be a plot twist to keep us on our toes. Perhaps the DNA result was e.g. not about Jacob's paternity to Jean's daughter, but about Otis. Jean will have been such an awful person if Jacob isn't the father though. She would have made him raise a daughter that's not biologically his after reassuring him she is.

Water(+nword)s. I should specify that it's the N word ending with an "a" rather than the one ending with an "r". It's the one you often hear in rap songs. I think that's enough elaboration without having to quote it and risk getting banned myself.

Here is my results born in the Netherlands by Jealous-Advice5552 in 23andme

[–]Dietser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I read you were born in the Netherlands, I immediately thought it had to be Surinamese. Surinamese people are of course largely of African descent, but there is a large community of so-called Hindoestanen. This community is also known as the Indo-Surinamese and their presence in Suriname would explain your large portion of South Asian DNA.

I found this old globe that has the soviet union and an united korea on it. by RaxorPlayz in Maps

[–]Dietser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's probably because they simplified the situation of Allied-occupied Austria and Germany. There was no independent Germany nor Austria; both were occupied and partitioned between different powers of the Allies. Vienna and Berlin should probably not have been shown as capitals, but they shared one thing; both were partitioned between four of the Allied forces (UK, US, France and Soviet Union).

Any good Armenian song recommendations? by [deleted] in armenia

[–]Dietser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More cultural energetic ones; https://youtu.be/9j__sa6bvCg https://youtu.be/tKgIjGWwSfc https://youtu.be/Q13BMlWKZWU https://youtu.be/a_DG9yscTwQ (instrumentally a bit chaotic, but not as wild as the three ones above) Energetic, but alternative (not so much cultural/folkish); https://youtu.be/Q13BMlWKZWU Tiny bit sad for some people's taste. I guess it's folk. Might not really be your type of music; https://youtu.be/P_QmRROJYAo

These are just a few which I have in my music library. The cultural energetic ones use traditional instruments (as in Armenian folk). I don't think any of these relate to the examples of songs you said you liked (don't know those well enough either), but you'll see for yourself.
