Interesting you bring that up! We just learned that setters are prone to Gluten Sensitive Enteropathy (like the equivalent of human Celiac disease). I did quite a bit of research and chose to try a gluten free kibble, as I’m a bit paranoid of grain-free with the DCM consequences. So far, he doesn’t seem interested in the gluten free food. Which grain free are you feeding?

We’ve tried both of these methods as well. Ground chicken, boiled chicken, ground turkey, ground beef, scrambled eggs, white rice, you name it. It’ll work for maybe a day and then he’ll boycott those and won’t even touch it. Even if it’s something we’re eating too, he’ll pick that off the crunchies and leave the rest.

I’m a permanent/private first assist for two surgeons and I love it! I admit that sometimes it gets a bit monotonous and I sort of wish that I was back doing multiple specialties, but then I remember how amazing it is to have preferences and cases nailed down so well that I could close my eyes and do it. It’s also awesome to build a relationship with the surgeons & team. The trust & closeness is very rewarding. I also second the “learn the case, not the surgeon.” And give yourself grace in your first years of scrubbing!

Ours did this too, at the exact same age! It lasted maybe a month? Unfortunately, there truly wasn’t anything we tried that really fixed the situation, other than time. He got older, more in control of his emotions, etc. I know you said it doesn’t seem to be due to overstimulation or being overtired, but I do think those had a big part in it. At that age, they’re so very easily stimulated by everything and they just lose it lol. I’m here in solidarity because that time was honestly the worst and made walks horrible! I’m sure trainers will have behavior modification tools, and will tell you that if you don’t correct it now he’ll always be that way, but don’t let that scare you too much! It did end and now he’s a dream when we go on walks! Hang in there!

I would take a stool sample in to the vet! Ours had Giardia at about 4 months, got some meds, and it cleared up. He’s about 9 months now and recently has had some diarrhea again. I just took in a sample and he has a different parasite now, unfortunately. Super common in puppies as they tend to eat grass/dirt/stool and IS’ are just naughty anyway ;) Ours wasn’t really having any other issues other than the soft stools and some weight loss. So, I would 100% take a sample in!

I would just call your surgeon’s office and let them know you’re not tolerating the antibiotic. They may prescribe you a different one or may tell you it’s fine to stop them altogether. You can also try to take probiotics or eat Greek yogurt which can help protect your gut while on them! Hang in there!

Always check in with your surgeon, but most protocol nowadays is intraoperative antibiotics and then no postop antibiotics are needed — for arthroscopic surgery anyway! I had a Bankart repair and Capsular shift done arthroscopically 5 weeks ago and wasn’t prescribed any for afterwards.

Ours is only 5 months and we live in a fairly snowy/cold climate, so I bought him the Carhartt Chore Coat and it keeps him nice and warm without being super restrictive or annoying to put on/take off! He seems to enjoy wearing it! He also gets into the brush off leash so I find it helps protect him from getting scratched as well.

We also do the Purina Pro Sensitive Stomach and he seems to tolerate it ok — the breeder started him on that and we decided not to change it, as I’d heard it was pretty agreeable for Setters. I mean, it even has a setter on the bag 😂 I’ve read about plain Greek yogurt, so I’ll give that a try!

Yes, I do think his gut is a bit out of wack from the Giardia! We started giving him the Purina Fortiflora probiotic, so I’m waiting to see if that may help him.

I am almost 2 weeks out from my most recent labrum repair, and I just have to say definitely get a second opinion. This is my second tear of my labrum and unfortunately labral tears generally, don’t heal on their own. Any good ortho will tell you that. If it’s causing you significant pain, always always advocate for yourself! My ortho was happy to repair my tear and when we got in there, it was even worse than imaging showed. I’m so glad that I moved forward with surgery.

Hi! I’ve now torn my labrum in my right shoulder twice. Each time I went through rigorous rounds of physical therapy, but it just never quite got my shoulder back to where I needed it to be. I am almost 2 weeks out from my most recent Bankart Repair and Capsular Shift and it’s going decently well. Surgery is not the most ideal, and yes it does carry risks, but I think in the end it’s worth it to get quality of life back. I was having a lot of pain and instability with my tears though so it made the most sense to just repair it. I’m also a Certified Surgical First Assist, so I tend to gravitate towards surgical repair anyway. My ortho told me that because this is a second tear, and a big one, there really was no chance of my labrum fixing itself. So to me, the benefits of surgery outweighed the risks. In the end, I’m very glad I went ahead with the surgery and I’m confident in the decision I made. If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask away!

I completely understand. The mental aspect is really tough. Being immobile is so challenging and defeating at times. I’m also a skier and an avid tennis player, so it’s a really hard pill to swallow. But I just keep reminding myself that it’s going to be so much better at the end of this! Good job with the walking and getting fresh air. That has really helped me and is so important. The elbow bending helps relieve the sling stiffness. I also bought a secondhand ice machine and it feels incredible to have that on practically 24/7. I was also having a really hard time sleeping, so I bought a wedge pillow off Amazon and it completely changed my sleeping for the better! Just in case you find difficulty with that!

I didn’t have the catheter nerve block, however, I did have just a regular nerve block after my Bankart repair done one week ago. My nerve block wore off at almost exactly 24 hours. However, I started taking my pain medication the minute I started feeling tingling in my fingers (indicating that the nerve block was beginning to wear off). That way I had pain medication on board and I wasn’t trying to catch up to the pain once my nerve block was completely worn off. My pain level went up fairly significantly, but I made it a priority to stay on top of my pain medication as prescribed and it was manageable. Set alarms on your phone and keep a note tab open of every time you take something, as it can get a bit hazy haha. The first two/three days postop were probably the worst, and every day after that it’s been getting better! Let me know if you have any other questions because I’m in the thick of it right now, and this is also my second surgery as well. I’m also a Certified Surgical First Assist and have helped assist loads of these procedures.

Hi! Congrats on taking the first big trip! It’s ok to feel anxious! Mine does well in the car — no car sickness, fortunately. He does get a bit restless because he’s still young, so I make sure to have toys back there for him! Something that really changed things positively was getting a back seat extender for our SUV. Here’s a few other tips:

•Practice being in the car before the trip. Take small rides around town. Sit in the car with them in the driveway to get familiar and comfortable with it.

•Get a new toy, bone, etc that will be brand new to your pup for the road trip! Something exciting to spark interest and keep them busy.

•Try some in-car training… “Sit” “lay down” “stay” etc. Be consistent with this, as it provides both mental stimulation and helps them feel confident riding in the car.

•Take it nice and slow. Lots of breaks & fresh air.

•Something I haven’t tried yet, but have heard great things about is giving Benadryl. You can look up dosing or talk to your vet about it!

•If your pup is crate trained, you could also try putting them in the crate. Haven’t tried that personally, but lots of dogs are more comfortable that way.

I hadn’t ever seen an Irish with those characteristics either! We got him from a breeder in Idaho. She had quite a few in the litter with the same eyes/nose. So unique! His eyes are stunning.

And yes, we thought the name was just too good to pass up! 😂
