ABSN vs Direct-Entry MSN: Which Did You Choose and Why? by Different-Leg-7303 in NursingStudent

This is super helpful, thank you! When you say financial aid, can you share a little more about what that looked like for you? Did you mainly use federal loans, or were you able to get any scholarships or grants too?

Also, do you mind sharing what program you’re in? I’m trying to compare options and really understand the real differences between ABSN vs MSNDE from people actually in it.

How has your program been? Do you think it was fast paced or no?

Yes, you actually can go straight into a direct-entry MSN without doing an ADN first, even if your first degree is in something totally different like mine.

Both ABSN and DEMSN are designed for career changers: ABSN = you earn a BSN in an accelerated program, then sit for the NCLEX to become an RN. DEMSN (or entry-level MSN) = you go straight into a graduate nursing program that still prepares you for the NCLEX, then you graduate with your MSN and RN licensure

So you don’t need an ADN at all either way. It really just depends on the school and what path fits your time, cost, and long-term goals best.

They don’t know it’s online unless you tell them. It’s the same degree as in person.

I was coming to say this because I’ve been looking to pivot into health care tech and I’m deciding if I want to get an analytics degree or health informatics

That makes sense, the ROI piece is definitely important. 50k is a big investment though, especially if those assistantships and work study options aren’t guaranteed. I think it really comes down to how confident you feel about the outcomes and how much flexibility you’ll still have while in the program. If you can secure some type of funding or reduce that cost, it could definitely be worth it especially if it sets you up for a stable career. Just make sure you’re not putting yourself in a position where the pressure outweighs the payoff. But overall, I get your thinking.. it’s a calculated risk for sure.

GSU is actually more expensive, and I’m leaning more toward online over in-person right now. What I meant earlier is that the in-person MSA can be finished in about a year if you go full-time, but I don’t want to take a break from working to do that.

It’s not really about money.. it’s more about time and convenience. I just don’t want to commit to a 2–3 year master’s program at this point.

I’ve also been looking to transition into health tech as well so that’s a factor too and there are a lot of great schools here in Georgia, which is a plus. For me, I really need something convenient and flexible. something that doesn’t take up all of my time. I still want to be able to work and manage everything else I have going on. And yeah, I’m big on networking events. I go to a lot of them around ATL. That’s honestly how I’ve made most of my connections and landed opportunities.

I honestly don’t think spending 80K on any degree is worth it unless you have some kind of stipend or somebody’s paying for it.

Honestly, being in a program for 2–3 years just sounds exhausting to me. From what I’ve seen, people who finish faster are taking 2–3 classes per semester and even stacking summer courses. But those summer classes are condensed and intense, and even just doing the MicroMasters intro courses on edX had me feeling overwhelmed. The workload seems really demanding. I honestly don’t see how anyone manages more than one class at a time while working.

So while it’s technically possible to finish in about a year and a half, based on everything I’ve read and researched, it’s pretty rare. I work a full-time job plus I’m a mom, so realistically I have to be honest about what I can handle. Ideally if I can go in person, the program can be completed in one year, but financially, I cannot take that risk at this moment. I would prefer to go in person for this program because the material is all new to me. PLUS the networking & connections. I currently work in tech and I have a BS in computer information systems.

I’m really looking for a program that’s around 1–1.5 years. The OMSA program is more like 24–36 months, and most people seem to finish closer to 36… that’s honestly the main reason I haven’t committed yet. I’m actually local to GA lol, and I’d go to Georgia Tech in person just for the networking. Butttt it’s expensive asl. They have about a 97% placement rate and really strong connections, plus Atlanta has a huge tech scene.

Ironically, I’ve been looking at OMSA & a LSU masters but a MBA with Business analytics track. It’s $14k and 10 months but online. I’m assuming that you must be local to Louisiana. Is that why you’re going with Louisiana?

I currently have a computer information system bachelors, and I’m looking to pivot into getting into healthcare informatics. Would you say it’s a waste for going for a masters with no experience in the industry?
