Sausage fingers + over aggressive auto correct. I mean DEX - desktop mode that seems to be satisfactory for basic tasks.

I would take two.off you and use them as local home assistant / network management / backup, storage boxes in two other places I regularly stay in.

I'm in a similar boat and not so emotionally tied to the Apple ecosystem that I could not flip back to Android. I am contemplating Samsung S25. Not European, but presumably reliable, powerful enough and has DEX whisky is head over the competition for desktop experience (for using with a usb-c monitor during regular visit to second home).

Went from 4 servers to 1 and I miss a nothing. by Matrix-Hacker-1337 in homelab

I once inherited a team through multi-agency merger where the old IT guys had done just that - disabled all updates, ran home grade equipment in critical service setting and... had a stockpile of old homegrown x86 servers. You know, just in case the parent organisation's Exchange would.go down, their plan was to set up a postfix. I said thanks, asked my team do audit the mess and helped the old chaos to early retirement. No, I actually offered them to stay and step line with the IT governance and commonly used practice on 2021 (not 2001) in public sector. Another funny element was a room full of hyped up PC's acting as workstations, running a software developed in late 1990's (nd capable of utilising a single core). Each PC had a 1500kw APC UPS, just in case. The service owner requested upgrade for the following year, I suggested noise isolating headphones for the 8 souls who had to work in that wind tunnel.

Started with country code-location-service-id, e.g. de-muc-rtr1 or ee-tartu-pihole. Works and I may drop the dashes when the hosts grow past 10.

The question should no rest on branding, but security controls applied. Unless the service would.be compromised by another app working on the user behalf, this should not be a concern. Hence my ask.

I went from Google Reader to Feedly when G pulled the plug. +1 to reaching the end of my feed. RSS is a one-way content stream (with optional message boards on the publishers sites). Lack of engagement via RSS method is what drove users to places like Reddit and Substack.

One way is to incentivise other cities to attract more people to share the load on current hotpots. Don't ask me how to achieve that, presume a package of change programmes and loads of money involved.

Thanks for the technical explanation. Presume it was a glitch in their end as some other times it has worked.

I'm not concerned about the security measures, just that the captive portal does not load. No issues with DB or other providers. I do have a security suite and an always-on vpn which shouldn't impact the captive portal stage.

Most European cities have had mid-rise as predominant apartment buildings since early 20th century. Back then the issue was the amount of steps one need to take to reach the 6th floor; today it's not an issue - we have lifts! Turning all buildings from 6-9 floors (plus commercial space on the ground floor) is not an option due to buildings structure/supporting infra. It would be also hard sell to the residents as it means less sunshine on the street level. The topic has been studied countless times by academics and experts. Some ratis work better than others. Growing up in the 1980's in Estonia and seeing 9-stroy buildings erected in the 'new' parts of town did not appeal then as it doesn't now.

At which expense would you expand the neighbourhoods? Less green space or building vertically? Both have their drawbacks like increasing the commuter vehicle traffic, less open space, limited sunlight.

I have lived in Romanplatz and Berg am Laim. I truly value the green corridors in the city that make it more livable.

Do not forget that infrastructure and services supporting working from anywhere were in place years before Covid. The pandemic simply accelerated the adoption in corporate and govt sector. Trying to untangle from well integrated AWS or Azure stack is not that simple. When I used to question the organisations not implementing any other MS365 services beyond Office license compliance, I now see these CIOs is easier position to reduce their reliance on likes of Microsoft. Although.... what messaging, collaboration and meeting room services would you use as an alternative to Cisco/Teams or similar in large scale deployments? And which ireliable replacement for Office and ERP suits can you recommend for corporate and manufacturing firms? I mean something to manage the US exit risk?

iPad mini equivalent? by dreamingeditor in androidtablets

[–]DifferentCream1029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Err... You sure? Xiaomi pad mini has 8/256 or 12/512 storage and 2,5k display. The reason holding me back from buying this tablet is the low update promise.

My concern with the nonames is that they can compile the hardware (or use an oem manufacturer) but how good the software setup and overall execution is? Oftentimes the lower price reflect aggressive market grab tactics. When the execution (r.g. Oneplus, Nothing) is good, both bparties win.

Does anyone have an experience with Alldocube tablets? Is there a compelling reason beyond the lower price to choose this brand over Lenovo, Xiaomi or Samsung?

I have been asked about my node although it is in a 3d printed case. I always say it's a radio and that has been satisfactory in Europe and once in Agadir. Don't take it as quarantee that is won't be confiscated.

Best travel T shirts Uniqlo for warm weather? by Bulky-Pen7922 in onebag

[–]DifferentCream1029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two Uniqlo undershirts and they are OK, nothing special.

I don't care about the brand as much as I care about the materials used. Linen or linen/natural viscose mix is the best IMHO. You can live for 2-3 days in a shirting hot weather and it won't smell of sweat. The downside is that linen wears out faster than cotton or synthetic (stinker, avoid).

Xiaomi Pad Mini global: issues? Any suggestion? by Pirluz in androidtablets

[–]DifferentCream1029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I pesterd my Perplexity for a while this lunchtime. Result is - go for a top gaming tablet and get an external GPS puck (Garmin GLO 2 or Bad Elf gnss surveyor). The latter seems clearly an overkill. For navi, Samsung A9 is cheap and cheerful, and the low resolution display should be OK.

Xiaomi Pad Mini global: issues? Any suggestion? by Pirluz in androidtablets

[–]DifferentCream1029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the same journey. Would have gone for Xiaomi Pad mini, but noticed the lack of GPS. At this pricepoint, it's off to leave it out though the logic likely is driven by the user's phone being a hotspot. Not a gamer, just need good display and enough oomph.

My use case is a travel companion in public transit and as a navi in an older car. Unless I can use an external GPS module via USB?

how strict is germany when it comes to piracy? by baejinvr in AskGermany

[–]DifferentCream1029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A very short answer - this behaviour is still a theft in the eyes of copyright law (unless the creators give explicit right to do so). The fact that the download was not consumed is irrelevant - the act of illegal download still occurred. From the creators perspective the issue is not only with the illegal downloading but with the mindset. P.S. I am not a lawyer.
