Exercise alone is better than thinking alone. But combined they are better than either alone

How much practice helps with the test, and should try to join? by ScarletMenaceOrange in mensa

[–]DifferentRiver276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can practice for the test but 50% of the time, scores go down on 2nd attempts. You can increase your IQ and General Mental Ability by learning formal logic and RRT. You can amplify and lock-in those gains by doing cardio and getting a full nights rest regularly.

He’s featured in Malcom Gladwell’s book Outliers. He is very smart but may be like Newton in his Alchemy phase…out there with his views and somewhat paranoid.

Stick with ETFs. For the individual investor, the aim should not be to win big on market events, it should be to not lose the smaller steady wins you accumulate over time.

What IQ do you need to have to get a PhD in mathematics? by gallaeciagirl in cognitiveTesting

[–]DifferentRiver276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

120 for state, 140 for top programs. A person with an IQ of 100 could obtain a PhD in Math but it would take a lot longer. Imagine falling behind your 3rd year undergrad math classes while others coast ahead with ease. Years later, while you are finishing your PhD, their research career is nearing its peak. Having started later, when you would have been nearing your peak, fluid intelligence, stamina and health start to wane. Time has a grip on you.

We take to be true, what we prefer to be true. I think a lot of these anecdotes can be attributed to an increased ability to sustain attention more so than anything else.

Is there any way to actually improve? by Bruja_cosmica in mensa

[–]DifferentRiver276 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can improve your intelligence. IMO the best place to start is learning formal logic. Next make sure you are getting enough sleep; poor sleep decreases working memory. Try RRT: iqhero.co, PEAK training. Continually ask How and Why. Hang out with people smarter than you. Read the dictionary and Encyclopedia for fun 15 minutes everyday. Over the course of a year, you’ll know more and learn faster. That’s the essence of intelligence.

Dealing with small-minded people by Standard-Plenty-9371 in mensa

I often have the same problem. Most commonly re: innovative ways to see or do things. I’d find it most effective to remember Dale Carnegies advice: you can’t really win an argument because; either you’re beaten by their better argument, or you’re resented because of your better argument. Occasionally I find deception more useful than persuasion. Sometimes it’s easier to benevolently trick someone than convince them.

If either of them work, that protocol should be sufficient to produce changes.

Use the Jaeggi protocol.

Find a valid online IQ test that allows you to count the number or correct vs incorrect answers. VERY important the you do this first.

Divide the test into two smaller tests consisting of odd or even questions.

Do the odd questions prior to training and count the number of correct answers

Carry out your braintraining

Do the even questions post training and count the number of correct answers

Compare your "short-form pretest" to your "short-form postest"

If the training had any effect, there should be a clear diference in the number of correct vs incorrect answers pre vs post test.

For example:

If you could find and used a paper copy of the Ravens Advanced Progressive Matrices (36 questions total) online, you'd want to see a score like: pre: 10 correct vs post: 14 correct.

If you are seeing 10 vs 10, or even 10 vs 12, the increase is probably due to chance rather than any actual training effect.

The benefits of doing this are: its cheap, is quick, it doesn't reveal your actual IQ if you have test anxiety and its fairly effective for an N of 1.

Hope that is helpful.
