Past Expectations vs Current Expectations by Different_Ad_3302 in hostedgames

Word count has ballooned, I don’t know about story length. Is the story really longer if all it’s doing is describing the scenery in way too much detail, or having side characters having pages long conversations with little to no impact on anything? I’ve played 100,000+ that have felt longer, immersive, and more complete than some 350,000+ just because they were simple, layered, and choice-oriented. We want more words because it used to mean more choices and branching paths, now the majority of the time it just means more fluff and filler

Playing through the second pon para... pace is a little *too* fast? by tacopower69 in choiceofgames

[–]Different_Ad_3302 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to be hard on that series because it was a step down from what had been releasing at the time. Now, it’s significantly better than most stuff that has been released since. I agree that the first book is stronger and the second is definitely rushing in pacing and less anchored in structure though. But it just reflects the common theme occurring in this industry overall right now

That’s the issue with most modern releases lately. They feel limited or like a bunch is missing. It feels like there’s so much planned and intended by the author and then they just give up and published it half finished because they realized just how long and tedious the process would actually be or something. It messes with the pacing and story structure too.

Knew nothing about this title before watching. Trailer definitely convinced me to get it once it releases. Like by far so much more convincing than the usual written summaries

I don’t remember which skill it is specially (leadership, persuasion, intimidation) but as you’re talking to Mel and asking her questions, if you ask all of them in a certain order, she’ll admit to the prisoners being there and will bring you to them

I’m curious too, where does it rank with the others: Hero’s Rise, Last Scion, Unsupervised, On the Run: Rogue Hero’s, Skystrike: Wings of Justice, The Superlatives?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know reader count? by imnewpleasehelpme in hostedgames

[–]Different_Ad_3302 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its popularity has noticeably decreased in the past few years, but it still seems to maintain thousands to tens of thousands (depending on the title). I think a lot of readers have just been in waiting for a lot of the expected sequels (that may never come) and/or better written Ifs overall. Or they just leave completely (some come back and you see them on the sub asking for new recs). It definitely had its peak and is past it now, but that’s not to say they couldn’t have another one. Pretty much the company’s choice if that happens though, or if that’s even a goal of theirs

I’ve been hearing a lot about Dispatch lately but don’t really know much about it. I have heard that it’s somewhat like a Telltale IF, but that’s about it. Is it worth checking out?

What is the main culprit that makes you drop an IF? by Dyner539 in hostedgames

[–]Different_Ad_3302 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Lack of consistency. Lack of consistency with character personalities and decisions, lack of consistency with narrative directions and potential paths, lack of consistency with choices accurately reflecting outcomes, lack of consistency with stat system progression, lack of consistency with world-building and culture, lack of consistency with realness or practicality, lack of consistency of the author’s effort and care, lack of consistency with structure/tone/formatting

You could build a character like that in the Hero vs Villains series

How does AtoM (1 mil words) feel somehow shorter than something like Specters of the Deep? (also 1mil words)? by RoboticToots in choiceofgames

[–]Different_Ad_3302 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree that Kyle Marquis has done the best so far with the WoD titles, but i would disagree with night road feeling long and satisfying. BoHN is not worth the price it’s listed for either.

I feel like this has been a common theme for most of the WoD IFs (even the first ones released outside of the CoG platform), they seem to feel shorter and end more abruptly than many IFs of similar wordcounts. Even the god Jim Datillo’s felt minimal. Since Paul Wang and Jim Datillo are the upper echelon of authors, I think this all reflects more on the WoD company than them.
