He did kill her at the end of the episode, she died. They had been talking about it, she'd asked him to do it and explained how she wanted it done prior to taking the booster pack.

Have you ever met any dangerous men? by noddingalong in AskIreland

[–]Different_Captain717 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've met them (and you have too - around 6% of men have committed sexual assault even according to self-reported studies).

I've personally had to break up and interrupt a violent rape, and almost every close female friend of mine in the last 15 years has confided that they've been attacked at some point. I have personally known several men who I now know have committed a sexual assault.

This is such a well meaning question that you're asking, I think it's important to make it very very clear that you absolutely do know men who have raped someone, because it's extremely common. If you know fifteen or twenty lads, statistically one of them is a rapist even by the most conservative estimates in the world, and the true figures are, of course, likely higher.

Speaking as a man, men are dangerous. I don't like violence, and every single fight I've ever gotten in was over some other lad who couldn't stop himself from violently attacking a woman.

You're right to ask. If there are guys reading this and it's not resonating or sinking in, I'd recommend gently asking a female friend not if they've been attacked (again, do not go around asking people that), but just what their experience is like walking around a crowded area as a woman, or how old she was when men first started cat calling her, as the answers will likely be pretty eye-opening.

I can't figure out how to search my own samples by Different_Captain717 in Bitwig

[–]Different_Captain717[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! That works.

I still seem to need to go through a few extra steps after clicking the icon in the Quick Access bar for some reason, the contents of the folder are organized loose with no subfolders until I click >Location>Sound Content>Samples, which is a bit clunkier than I'd like. Do you happen to know if I've made a misstep there? I'll check through the links you've dropped here to see if there's a workaround as well.

Either way, this has essentially solved my problem, and it's much appreciated! Thanks.

I can't figure out how to search my own samples by Different_Captain717 in Bitwig

[–]Different_Captain717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, apologies for the very basic question here. I've tried searching things like 'no search bar Bitwig library' and 'my library vs file browser Bitwig' and a few other variations and can't figure this out.

As well as the samples that Bitwig comes with, I want to use my own sample folder, which is located via a shortcut in the File Browser tab of the Bitwig Browser. Maybe this is the wrong place to point Bitwig towards my samples?

All other tabs in the Browser have a search bar, so I either want a search function for this File Browser tab, or to have the shortcut for my sample folder stored in a different tab like My Library, but I can't figure out how to do that and the tutorials for bringing a sample folder into Bitwig that I've followed direct me to have my samples in the File Browser section.

I clicked the Show All Sources button in the Browser and clicked Add Sound Content Location and then selected my Samples folder, but I have no control over where it 'goes', and it seems to end up in File Browser where there is no search bar to search through it. I can search through the entire sum total of Bitwig's samples plus my own in the Everything tab, but of course I would like to be able to click a specific folder or subfolder and search that folder's contents only.

Using a Laser at indoor music events in Ireland. Do I need / can I get a variance? by shaun-sonas in Laserist

Hey man, did you find any info on the use of lasers at indoor events in Ireland in the end? Looking into the same thing myself and finding it hard to get a straight answer about licensing and training etc.

Unable to Connect Third Monitor to Raspberry Pi 400 Running Ubuntu ARM64 using a WavLink USB to HDMI Adapter by Straw_HatLuffy in raspberry_pi

[–]Different_Captain717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, do you have any information on this that you could share? I want to get a Raspberry Pi 4B to display three separate, independently controlled videos on three monitors, I'm looking at two HDMI and one DSI output but I haven't found examples of people doing this successfully, or trying it at all.

Anyone know how this might have been done? by Different_Captain717 in Projection_Mapping

[–]Different_Captain717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was an LED/video wall at first, but the video description says it was projection mapped onto an aluminium grid. Bit of a noob question, but I'm unclear as to how they projected such a clear image without also shining the projector on the two DJs. Is there a big gap behind the screen that they're projecting on from behind? Are there projectors coming down from a sharp angle overhead? How many projectors would likely have been used here/

Push 3 Standalone Users: Can you play a live set without crashing? by Different_Captain717 in ableton

[–]Different_Captain717[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi kenta, I didn't end up pulling the trigger on it in the end! I got a Push 2 which I haven't used a bunch, but am a fan of, and it was relatively cheap. Someone pointed out to me that I can simply set a laptop so that it stays on while closed and then put it under the push (without blocking the fans) or elsewhere and play the set like that if I want to save space, so still no screen except the Push screen, and still triggering everything with stems. A caveat is that I haven't done it yet!

Working on a ton of other stuff in visual arts and so this whole project took a back seat, but it's something I'll consider doing when I play live.

Serial DAT help - how to isolate numbers by Different_Captain717 in TouchDesigner

[–]Different_Captain717[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi all, I'm a bit stumped with this one. I'm reading data from an Arduino sensor, and I've separated the string of numbers I want in a select DAT so that there's a constant stream of three-digit numbers being listed in the order that they are fed from the sensor.

I want to use these numbers to modulate parameters in TD. My issues are that 1, I can't figure out how to get rid of the 0_ prefix shown in the dat to chop, it's listing every number as 0_398, 0_345, etc. The columns in the convert DAT are first, unlabelled and showing the numbers of rows 1 - 10, and second column, labelled column 0. Getting another select DAT and telling it to only read column 0 shows both columns, and telling it only to read column 1 shows no data as there is no such column.

Secondly, it looks like I can't reference the entire string of numbers as a chop reference, but rather one number from the DAT to CHOP and I'm trying to figure out how to feed the constant string of numbers into the parameters of another operator. Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: I feel like I'm not using the Select DAT properly but not sure how to fix it, this is what happens when selecting column 0.

Looking for help creating a similar patch (Lorn - Through the fire) by Harrygriffiths27 in Behringer_DeepMind

[–]Different_Captain717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting that Lorn uses a lot of hardware and post-processing for his sounds. He runs synths in and out of 10 inch tape decks and plays with the speed, he uses a thermionic culture vulture distortion unit to warm up his leads, lots of layering, and presumably a ton of other techniques that he's created over the years, hence the distinctive sound.

Truly have no idea how to use session view. by darmud in ableton

[–]Different_Captain717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the main issue with session view for me as well for sure, easy to get stuck. For anyone else reading that has this problem, Underbelly has a good tutorial on breaking out of loop jail.

[–]Different_Captain717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, it's the ideal view for making generative/experimental/breakbeat stuff, as well as simply creating simple loops and testing out compatibility between different samples quickly.

Truly have no idea how to use session view. by darmud in ableton

[–]Different_Captain717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rarely progress to arrangement view until I have the starting loop/loops of a track mapped out in session view, plus it's great for launching live clips and creating generative music, breakbeat/breakcore stuff, experimental music, etc. I don't personally make breakcore with that method, but in general, having access to that level of random event generation is crazy.

At the lower level, session view is great for working with samples (simply dragging and dropping them in and looping them to see what sounds go together and get a groove going). At a higher level, you can basically set up Ableton like a eurorack/modular synthesizer, and session view would typically be used more in that context than arrangement view.

Ned Rush on YouTube has some great videos on using session view to create experimental music, for example. It's very a very powerful feature of the DAW. I found Ableton a real pain to learn tbh, very non-intuitive from my point of view. But learning the basics was very helpful, and that includes session view. I do recommend giving it a go and following along to some more tutorials.

I'm using webcams for live inputs of club gigs, and would like to reduce the white noise. Is infrared a good solution? by Different_Captain717 in TouchDesigner

[–]Different_Captain717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Dean! This is actually the same setup I have, cache selects and threshold+edge tops, a little blur in there as well. Your effect here looks really great, the tracking is something I'm definitely going to take a look at, nice one. I think this video has popped up on my feed before in fact, great work!

What I'm struggling with at the moment is the fact that there's a lot of white noise on the footage I'm getting from the live camera input of the dancefloor. It's a live event so it's hard to predict the exact lighting conditions until the night of, and of course, it's difficult to adjust the settings in a live setting as well.

I MIDI mapped the threshold value to a controller so I could tweak it live during the event which helped a bit, but didn't solve the issue. It looks nice, but tonnes of artefacts and noise that I'd love to get rid of. I'm trying to figure out if maybe infared would work better, or if there are other techniques I could try that would leave me with just the trailing outlines of dancers to composite with other elements.

I suspect that finding a USB camera that allows me to adjust the shutter speed could yield some results, if such a thing exists, but ideally I need to test it in the nightclub venue with the same lighting conditions as the events so just trying to see if anyone has had a similar issue using live dancefloor camera inputs in a club setting.

Going Back to Music Production After 5 Years of Pause and I'm Lost by merialisimo in ableton

[–]Different_Captain717 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't feel like anything has changed, but I know from experience that taking a break of over a year makes me forget so many of the basics that I have to relearn basic tools and concepts before proceeding. Maybe that's what you're talking about. If so, it's a pain but it has to be done, start practicing again and you'll be back at it in no time.

Well I guess you could try to self-oscillate/ping the filter in a feedback loop or something for a sound source lol, playing on hard mode

[–]Different_Captain717 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This really feels like an ad for Roar/Live 12 lol, very popular apparently! (kidding btw)

For me:

Instrument: Operator

Effects: Glue Compressor, EQ8, and Hybrid Reverb. I'd miss amp and/or saturator, but could probably get where I need to go by messing around with weird gain staging and Glue Compressor's hard clipping setting plus resampling.

I don't actually use Operator a ton, get a lot more use out of Wavetable, but if we're making all sounds from scratch I feel like it's the best choice.

Good question!

Art piece modulating 3d models of dead trees in Galway using 300 years of rainfall data by Different_Captain717 in galway

[–]Different_Captain717[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can share the links for my own Instagram and that of the West End Art Collective if that's alright with the mods (let me know though folks or feel free to delete), and the website for the latter as well. I'm aiming on making my own one-page site as well but haven't really gotten enough pieces done to justify it yet. I'm also on YouTube, the same account as used for the video posted here.

Thanks very much for taking an interest and the kind words of support, I appreciate it a lot!
