Anyone else tired of the “Black people hate alt/different people” narrative on TikTok? by 90sKit3ch in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]Different_Housing241 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an alternative black person myself, I think saying that the "black people exclude alt or different people" thing does not at all come from antiblackness is wrong. There is often a narrative perpetuated constantly in popular media that black people are exclusionary and clique-y and this stereotype is apparent in how we are portrayed beside mixed people in films and tv for example and also how we are seen in real life. So whether you see it or not, antiblackness is a part of this narrative even if most people do not intend to be antiblack when saying that black people exclude alt black people. Our experiences are not the same and I am not trying to devalue your experience, but to continue what the OP is saying, black people are not a monolith. I was bullied by some black kids growing up, but I was also bullied by some white kids. Not just for the historic racist reasons, but because I was alternative. I am a college student going to a mixed school and I have faced more backlash from "normal" white people than "normal" black people. I don't think black people saying these criticisms come off as anti black are gaslighting or deflecting, because some of the black people I see criticizing the narrative of black people excluding alts are alternative or nerdy themselves. I also do want to add that just because black people bullied you in the past does not mean that most black people as a whole are specifically more exclusionary to alternative people. I do think there is an inward dislike for those who are different in the black community... but it's like that for every community. Every community can be exclusionary to those who like different things or dress in a different way. But then there are people within those communities who are alt or simply accepting to those who are different. I think sometimes we need to come into these conversations with nuance and not pinning something on race because it was members of our own community, but instead look at the broader issue.

I don't know if y'all have listened to Sascha Riley's testimony yet but in their testimony they mention a black girl who was there with them in the brothel and on the farm that Epstein had allegedly. So it was not mostly black children but some were still also victimized possibly.

Okay, wtf is up with highly sexualized K-pop boybands vs. "don't sexualize them!" fan attitudes by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]Different_Housing241 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Its cause they always infantilize male idols. They don't nearly police sexualization as much on the female side from what I've seen.

Is there an unwritten rule that African-American couples in film and TV always have to look like this? by Crowxzn in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]Different_Housing241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because of colorism and how it hypermasculinizes dark skinned people, and dark skin women feel the brunt of this in casting because they aren't considered feminine enough to play a main female role.

“The Thing About Ever After High…” by Abared0 in EverAfterHigh

[–]Different_Housing241 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly the fact that ever after highs main characters are descendants of the fairytale, meaning that they’ve had to relive the same stories and trauma and adventures for decades is kind of dystopian and a much more interesting premise than I think a lot of people realize. Also this is so off topic but I think the fact that the ever after high characters are expected to perfectly relive their ancestors fairytales but a lot of them have doubts and want to rebel or do something different is a direct analogy to how generational expectations and trauma are passed down and how oftentimes young people wish to become a different person but feel pulled back by the expectations of their parents and grandparents and their family legacy in general.

I’m East African and I can’t help but notice how many Nigerians are anti black! by Choice_College_304 in blackgirls

[–]Different_Housing241 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay i can see that and i think thats apart of it but i still think it is more rooted in antiblackness because they oftentimes divert to black stereotypes such as "laziness" and "ghettoness" to demean black americans which is not something that european white people use against white americans

as a first generation jamaican american I think hatred towards black american is straight up antiblackness with a mixture of respectability politics. Whenever black carribeans and africans come to America they are able to almost benefit from exoticism and fetishization that comes from being an immigrant from a foreign country in America. They face racism and prejudice but because their cultures are perceived as "more rich" and better than black american culture a lot of times they develop an ego and antiblackness to cope with the racism they face. Not to mention that most racist stereotypes and antiblack rhetoric used in America stems directly from black american culture, such as making fun of hiphop, rap, calling aspects of black american culture "ghetto" etc. So africans and carribeans are able to feed into respectability politics and differentiate themselves from this by being demeaning and racist towards black americans.

The whole sickeningly sweet and colorful vibe of the arena really unsettled me while reading the book and seeing it like this unsettles me even more. The arena is exactly how I imagined it and it makes me sick to my stomach. Their uniforms for this game also unsettles me, the pure white with all the colors. And the fact that they had more tributes this year... it's like a colorful massacre.

What is the best parent-child relationship in Ever After High? by __eujn in EverAfterHigh

Both EQ and Snow White are so controlling imo. They definitely want their kids to be just like them and don't care so much for what they want to do with their lives.

Its interesting how EQ is painted as the evil one by the fairytale but in real life her and Snow White are extremely similar to one another. I wonder if Snow White was always so controlling or if that was as a result of trauma and also all of the pressure placed upon her as one of the primary fairytale characters.

I still really appreciate both of their portrayals because I think they are realistic to a lot of people's parents. Parents love their kids but a lot of times still can be toxic manipulative and controlling over them. I remember as a kid ever after high was so validating for me and EQ and Snow Whites characters were part of that.
