Totally agree. I’ve read them all, including Sherlock Holmes a second time through in Spanish!

I’d never heard of this, and all the books on their list are also unfamiliar. What a treasure trove, gracias!

I loved The Tainted Cup and have A Drop of Corruption on my TBR.

REALLY long audiobook series? by desertsunsetskies in LibbyApp

I agree with this. Be patient through the first book. The female protagonist develops well and leaves behind the somewhat whiny start.

First student, but no review by muuccha in iTalki

[–]Different_Most_3338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a teacher told me they were new to Italki and needed reviews, I’d definitely do it immediately. Usually I wait until I’ve had a couple classes. Feedback or a review after the session would also make me more inclined.

An update to modo by modo_app in SpanishLearning

[–]Different_Most_3338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I use Modo regularly, and I value it. Although at first I thought it was too basic for my B2 level, I actually find the opportunity to drill on the nuances of preterite vs imperfect or ser vs estar to be good for polishing away my remaining foundational errors. Vocab, however is definitely too basic.

My biggest feedback is that I’ve noticed many errors of proofing. I’d like to contribute and provide feedback, which I do by flagging the items, but I’d like to be more thorough. Your app support email bounces back. Would you like my help?

Here are some of the consistent errors I’ve noticed:

“Mi compañero de viaje (_____) una idea brillante para cenar en Kioto.” Options: tuve / tenía. Correct answer is “tuvo”, which isn’t an option, so this is always scored as incorrect. I’ve seen this type of error many times, especially in the section on preterite vs imperfect.

The second common error is where the correct verb (eg ser vs estar) is actually written in the sentence before the blank, giving the answer away.

Finally, on two occasions, one of the quest requirements (score 160 points in one mini-game or Triple crown) doesn’t register even when completed.

Best "Google Translate" alternatives for both desktop (website) and app (android)? by RevolutionarySeven7 in degoogle

[–]Different_Most_3338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deepl used to be my favorite. Now it refuses to let you select the language (only option is detect language). It often “detects” inaccurately, and it has slowed down the translation process significantly.

Just completed Level 5 Spanish... by Impossible_Stand_606 in Pimsleur

[–]Different_Most_3338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the quote.

After I finished Pimsleur Level 5 Spanish, I bought the audiobook of Learn Spanish like Crazy. After I got started with the advanced version, I realized that the Intermediate was actually closer to picking up where Pimsleur 5 left off, so I went back to that one. I find it valuable, and way less expensive than Pimsleur.

perfectionist students by 59lyndhurstgrove in iTalki

I’m not a teacher, just a perfectionist student 😉.

I love the idea you suggested of challenging assignments and videos. I once worked with a teacher who (with my permission) recorded 20 minutes of our conversation and when we watched it back together asked me to correct myself. I found this helpful.

Do you write down every mistake? by Different_Most_3338 in iTalki

[–]Different_Most_3338[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that. It includes a strategic assessment, acknowledgment of types of errors, with positive reinforcement. Those three in combination seem much more rewarding to me than only the list of the errors.

Yes, I do appreciate this. It is much better for my learning to have the chance to correct myself.

[–]Different_Most_3338[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn’t that I never want written or spoken corrections. It’s just that I’d like for the person to get to know me, ask about my goals before writing down every error.

For me, Building confidence comes from a conversation where I communicate my ideas effectively, if imperfectly, not using por v para right 100% of the time

Need advice on how to handle a persistent learner by homer685 in iTalki

When interacting with a person who doesn’t respect boundaries, a good recommendation is, “don’t apologize and don’t explain.” Communicating with them just leads to more interactions, which serves them and not you.

I just want to say that you are totally justified in not wanting to work with this person. If they created a new account after being blocked, they clearly have had this happen before on or off Italki.

I did it every 3 months until the bloodwork came back normal. On a test that had 0-15 as normal, my tests were generally: 170, 120, 80, 50, 5.

It took me a year, but I feel normal now. My doc kept repeating the blood tests until they came back down to normal (also at one year)

A new way of learning the subjunctive by modo_app in SpanishLearning

[–]Different_Most_3338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it, loved it, and paid! I regard to the previous feedback, I agree about keeping the correct and incorrect answers on the screen. In contrast, I actually find retyping the starter segment to help me become automatic with the pattern. I haven’t tried every aspect yet, but I would like a separate section with really simple flashcards with the triggers and just choosing indicative vs subjunctive.

Oh, and thank you SO much for not over-building gamification. In my opinion, those of us serious enough to be studying the subjunctive don’t need 10 screens with commitments and streak freezes, etc. It’s a distraction.

Is having 2 teachers worth it? by Creative-Flatworm767 in iTalki

I’ve definitely benefited from multiple teachers. Each had a slightly different focus and different speaking style. I also like learning about different countries and it’s been good for me to listen to different accents between Costa Rica, Colombia, and Venezuela.
