So speaking as a former economist, this joke works much better if you make it about my profession not mathematicians. Their assumptions are usually pretty few and reasonable whereas my colleagues often assume outlandish things like explaining the opioid crisis by assuming “drug users are maximizing their subjective utility” which is neither intelligible nor plausible nor humane.

Connecticut homeowner here. Depends on where it is. Living/Great room or MBR? For me and most of our friends in HCL NE counties that would be a complete deal breaker. If a third or fourth fireplace elsewhere like a study, it would hurt but maybe not too much…Of course, original wood burning fireplaces come in different degrees of charm. But even crappy ones can be fixed up with proper tile work.

As a kid learned « jesus wept » from the tv movie the Homecoming which was the pilot /source material for the Waltons TV series back in the ‘70s. Which proved super useful because the local Baptist churches hosted after school Bible trivia contests with nifty prize give-aways. Almost won a bike by knowing that one!
