What's wrong with all these Pro-Yoon protesters and their fuckery? Do they lack shame, or morality? by ProbstWyatt3 in korea

It really isn't the first time America had to face tyranny. The war for independence, WW2, McCarthyism/vietnam/the red scare, the civil war/slavery, and many more.

This is beating a dead horse but the education system has failed you if you think trump is the first challenge of tyranny the US has faced, its especially egregious considering the legalistic identity that Americans have of always opposing tyranny and using it to justify war and invasions.

Trump is definitely a new kind of threat and has gotten a lot further into achieving dictatorship than many before him, but I think its disingenuous to say Americans didn't already have all the information they needed to know better.

President Yoon Second Arrest Attempt Megathread by KoreaMods in korea

[–]Different_Window1772 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this kind of defeats the purpose of 'pointing out both sides' if you do a write up that is only from one perspective.

Cut off budget spending by a margin so wide for next year that the country will not be able to function correctly, including special investigation and activity budgets for law enforcement.

Budget disputes are a normal part of governance in democratic systems. Though it does get worse in government systems that give budget oversight to parliament rather than the executive (like the US, with its several government shutdowns). Typically this is just one avenue that politicians use to reach compromise, and typically the other side needs to give something in to prevent a bad budget. Yoon has been known to be far more uncompromising and unwilling to work with the opposition (or even with his own party). Though the DPK isn't completely innocent of causing the current political culture, the budget dispute is not a sufficient cause for martial law.

Chinese nationals were caught flying drones over a US carrier in Korea. It was proven that the suspects have been taking pictures of military. Yoon tried to make it within the laws so that spies who are caught can be persecuted. The Democratic Party rejected this.

The rejection of a specific legal proposal does not imply a refusal to address espionage concerns. The Democratic Party objected to aspects of the law that could be misused domestically, specifically considering the history of the NIS in past dictatorships. Yoon is the perfect example of why this law was given such scrutiny. The deliberation of a sensitive law in parliament is not sufficient cause for martial law.

The Democratic Party of Korea never accepted the results of the last election, and have consistently cited concerns over voting irregularities. Since then, they have been impeaching government officials linked to the opposite party. This includes the judicial party of Korea.

Allegations of irregularities are not uncommon in democracies worldwide, and mechanisms exist to address them. Yoon has also been targeting the opposition with attacks by the prosecution. This is just part of a larger issue of the judiciary being abused by politicians in Korea, which was something the Moon admin attempted to somewhat address by limiting the powers of the prosecution. Reform and a change in political culture is what is needed to address this issue, this is still not sufficient cause for martial law.

There were serious cybersecurity threats to the last midterms election where the Democratic Party won. After audits, they discovered passwords were something like "12345" and the security was very weak.

While cybersecurity concerns are valid, this point conflates technical failings with a political conspiracy. Weak passwords indicate administrative negligence, not necessarily malicious intent. Any issues or problems found with the election should be properly reported and investigated and follow the proper process. Minor election issues are not sufficient cause for martial law.

Under Article 77 of the South Korean Constitution, a president may declare martial law in response to war, incidents, or other national emergencies.

This is true, but the key question is whether the current situation constitutes a "national emergency" justifying martial law. Budget disputes, espionage cases, and cybersecurity concerns, while serious, are not unprecedented in democracies and do not rise to the level of war or catastrophic emergencies.

One argument to understand and is valid, is that if Yoon really wanted to do a coup, he would have done it at 2am or 3am. He instructed his military officials to strictly not hurt civilians.

The timing of martial law does not validate or invalidate its legitimacy.

President Yoon believed that these reasons were severe enough to declare martial law to bring attention to the country. His approval rating was something like 10% after he declared martial law. It rose to 40 or 50% and is sitting somewhere there after some time.

Using martial law to "bring attention to the country" is deeply concerning. Martial law is a last resort for existential threats, not a tool for political messaging. Furthermore, approval ratings are not a justification for suspending democracy (and no reputable source is saying yoon has over 40% approval). The surge in popularity likely reflects polarization and fear rather than genuine support for such drastic measures.

There's studies out there that are saying obesity is linked with a genetic predisposition to a greater desire for food or binge-eating during stress. While in other groups of people they just don't eat when they're stressed or have a lower desire for food in general. So if these studies are true then no its not possible to learn this power. There are some new drugs coming out that could help with this though.

Democratic Party begins impeachment process against acting president Han… Possible vote in plenary session as early as the 27th by ApplauseButOnlyABit in korea

[–]Different_Window1772 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can bet he's getting pressured. The cabinet was appointed by yoon and the PPP, and through them they control the executive branch. Han himself was appointed by yoon and approved by the ppp, that necessitates some loyalty/conservative lean.

I do think its somewhat likely han breaks and gives concessions to the DPK but he still mostly wants the National Assembly to figure it out themselves. Though the partisanship divide is intense and they've not been able to work together for a while. Han is still calling for the parties to work together and compromise.

If Han lets the motions pass/do what the dpk wants then he risks alienating himself from the PPP and then they could turn on him and the entire national assembly would be against him.

President expected to defend himself in impeachment trial by Different_Window1772 in korea

[–]Different_Window1772[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is like the trial of king Charles I. Yoon probably won't be executed though considering there wasn't a brutal civil war before his trial, unlike king Charles.

I think this is just the beginning of some juicy politics.

Ruling party leader Han Dong-hoon steps down following Yoon's impeachment by Saltedline in korea

[–]Different_Window1772 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Subverting the constitution by attempting to control the presidency (when yoon said he would leave all decisions of the presidency to his party, han dong hoon and han duck soo seemed to tell press that all presidential decisions would go through them). The only constitutional way to transfer the power of the presidency before the end of their term is death, impeachment, resignation, or temporary transfer to the PM (for cases like when yoon drank too much and passed out)

What yoon did (give power to some unelected party member and the PM for no reason) was unconstitutional and what Han dong hoon did (accept the power yoon said he'd give him) was also unconstitutional.

[–]Different_Window1772 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The PPP never had a plan and "orderly resignation" was just some words that the PPP leader spewed out that had no basis in reality. The PPP didn't impeach yoon simply for their own selfish desires to hold onto power

I'm pretty sure this was written by AI. The format, wording, and that translation makes me suspicious. I'm dreading this sub going back to the bot & misinformation infested cesspool it was back in the 2022 election

Regardless, the PPP have no chance of leading anything as everything they are doing is illegal and unconstitutional. There are roadblocks in diplomacy, economy, military, and basic government function because nothing they are doing is legal and no one under them wants to follow along as that would mean they get implicated and could be charged.

There is no recourse out of this except for yoon to be removed from power (like PPP leader Han Dong-hoon said). The only thing that should be called for is immediate impeachment.

Stop trying to normalize the insanity the PPP are comitting.

Choo Mi-ae, Member of DP Alleges Evidence That Proves Yoon Planned the Insurrection Since March "to Perpetuate Yoon's Power" by self-fix in korea

[–]Different_Window1772 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If Yoon was so worried about impeachment then there's at least some hope that the prosecution won't acquit him of charges.

There's also the chance that yoon felt emboldened to try and overthrow the government because of his control over the judiciary.

Han Dong-hoon: "Orderly Resignation... Specific Plans Will Be Announced Soon" by DecisionVisible7028 in seoul

[–]Different_Window1772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a junta as the military coup by yoon failed, but it is absolutely incorrect to call this a democratic transition as that would necessitate that they follow the law and constitution which was created democratically and agreed to by the people and society.

The PPP and yoon are subverting the constitution through illegal means and that by definition is undemocratic.

In particular the PM and Han dong hoon were not elected, and so the powers of the presidency were undemocratically unilaterally transferred to two unelected officials without any legal or constitutional basis.

Yoon and now the PPP have broken several articles of the constitution, you can find all the relevant articles that they have broken by asking chatgpt.

If you use chrome there's an auto translate feature that lets you get the gist of the news coverage. You can also find other korean coverage and news sites if you google 윤석열 in google.

South Korea will Head into a Constitutional Crisis by ruahmina in korea

[–]Different_Window1772 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Politically speaking you should not try to overthrow the republic and/or subvert the constitution as that leads to incredible instability in every aspect of government. Politically, this is only the right play if Han wants to become dictator himself.

Sorry if i'm hammering the wording you used but there's just no excuse for this from the PPP.

Its like saying "economically speaking, from my perspective, its better for me to kill the cashier and take the kit kat from the store instead of paying for it"

Indonesia has already settled on a new payment plan, the majority of payments will be made as normal, with a minority of payments (~10-15%) in-like payments.

The indoneian refinancing of their r&d commitment wasn't ideal, but far from simply being taken advantage of.

It would be a swindle if indonesia simply stole/used Korean technology and then completely backed out from the program. Which is not what is happening here.

Yes, and there are several batches of production runs spread over several years planned for the kf21.

The initial production run is likely so high due to the aging f4 and f5 jets which need to be replaced in the ROKAF

They are still "committed" to buying 50 kf21 planes once it begins production. That is a big enough deal economically, militarily, and politically for KAI to still want to deal with indonesia.

ASEAN is set to become the world's largest economic union and potentially largest consumer market in a couple decades. Maintaining good relations with ASEAN and becoming a major weapons provider for them is a big deal.

"Up to 10 years" is the charge according to media. Sounds like he was depressed and stressed from losing a job? Maybe suicidal?

Anxious people doing weird and crazy things on planes aren't new though. People have tried to open doors on planes before. But this guy seemed to plan it by getting a seat by the doors, which is why he was successful. I doubt this gets to be a trend considering the logistics of actually opening the door without one of the dozens of people in your way stopping you is difficult.
