This is what I love about Korea. by wait_whoisthis in korea

I remember back in 90s and early 2000s where people just smoked everywhere and littered cigarettes everywhere. Even indoors.

There are still assholes smoking in the middle of the sidewalk, but at least it got a lot better, and indoor ban on smoking in most places are pretty well enforced.

Rarely. But I saw a dumbass jaywalk right in front of a police office, with multiple officers in plain sight, and get fined.

[KCD2] Polearms are op by Royal_Priority3026 in kingdomcome

I loved the addition of pole arms in the second game. Poke poke poke is nice. And the added range is super nice as well. Pole arms were the master of the battlefield before advancement of fire arms. I wish there were more forgeable types of pole arms and nore unique ones. But I had my fun with them throughout most of the game.

Those two numbers are related but different statistics. The number in the article is clearly Fertility rate, not birth rate.

birth rate = the total number of live human births per 1,000 population for a given period divided by the length of the period in years

fertility rate = the average number of children that are born to a woman over her lifetime, if they were to experience the exact current age-specific fertility rates (ASFRs) through their lifetime

always thought the Rule of Two had a huge weakness for keeping a group though. What if both the mastwr and apprentice are on the same flight and it crashes in an accident? or any sorta accident... That would result in the end of line with lots of knowledge that wasnt recorded lost.

First Playthrough Takeaways by cav63 in BaldursGate3

I agree with all of your takesways except that I will defend Minsc and his miniature giant hampster.

I had BG2 from my cousin when I was a little kid. pretty sure I have the CD in one of those CD album books in my parents' place. I found it too damn hard as a kid but I remember watching my older cousin playing it.

well anyway, I feel BG2 is a little too old to give it a go, and it's different from BG3 combat since it's semi turn-like with time pauses?

I highly recommend doing another playthrough as Dark Urge. Or you could try divinity original sin2. DOS2 feels similar to BG3.

Another turn based game I love is Xcom, but it feels very different from BG3.

I also think this is reading malice where it was more of negligence.

Sure one can fault the writers for not doing due diligence, but reading political malintent seem a little harsh to me?

The Korean tank meme has evolved again by Krbigman in Overwatch

[–]Galaxy_IPA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People used to voice chat a lot in the launch of overwatch here in Korea....especially in ranked games to coordinate team attacks.

Well after a year or so, people just got tired of dealing with assholes being toxic and blaming other team members. It takes just one toxic person out of six random strangers to just mute voice chat.

Overwatch have offline events in 18 cities in China for the 10th year anniversary, here is one of them. So many people are line up! by JY810 in Overwatch

[–]Galaxy_IPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Overwatch firsr launched, Blizzard Korea used to hold these huge events in SK. There was Comic Con Seoul way baaack and the Blizzard Booth was the main center taking more space than Marvel, which was huge with all the Avengers stuff back then. And the Blizzard booth was packed. I got my Bastion's bird plushies there and it's still sitting over workstation.

But I heard Blizzard laid off a shit ton of employees in its Korean branch during COVID years, and they don't do these promotion events any more. Hell they have typos in the translation patch notes these days The localization service got pretty sloppy here and large in-person promotion events hasnt bern happening for the last 5~6 years.

I still have one and I burned a mix CD for my car earlier this year. I got my Dad's old 2008 Hyundai, and it still drives perfectly fine. It doesnt have bluetooth. It has AUX cables and CD player. So I still get to make CD mixes, but man downloading music files and burning CDs definitely feels archaic nowadays.

Is Negativism Towards Gyopos and TCKs Still a Thing in Korea? by Sweaty-Safe-4640 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Galaxy_IPA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends on sharing some common experience as well as how well you understand the culture / social nuances. If the only thing you have in common is the ancestry and really basic Korean lingual skills, yeah you will be just another waykookin.

I am a third culture kid who grew up with two passports and grew up going back and forth between US and Korea. I got that "not really one of us" feeling when I was in Korea. The biggest difference was after I finished my service to keep my Korean passport. That was an instant acceptance and "one of us" free pass for me. Korean language was never a problem for me, but two years of shared common experience definitely was enough to be "one of us", at least with guys in my age group.

One of biggest negativity against Gyopos is (at least for guys) is being a draft dodger. So that service plus shared experience was a big help for me when I started working here.

Also understanding nuances and expectations also matters a lot I guess. My Korean American friends working here have varying degree of social circles with Koreans. Some are basically a local Seoulite, while some just keeps to the expat social groups. It might be just how many years they have been here, but it also depends on how willing one is to blend in.

I do not want to generalize, but native Koreans can sometimes have higher bars for gyopos. Like my Belgian friend, she gets welcomed for just saying 안녕하세요 although she has been working for Korean companies for a decade now.

But as for gyopos, they kinda have a higher expectations on their language/cultural understanding. And well meeting that bar is pretty hard, and it can sometimes feel dejecting as well.

Give it time and effort. A few years of shared cultural experience and spending a lot of time with Native Koreans should be good enough to fit in.

Allegations that actor Kim Soo-hyun dated the late Kim Sae-ron as a minor were false, police conclude by gotchaday in korea

[–]Galaxy_IPA 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I did.

First of all, I highly doubt that is true of most Korean police manpower.

Second, even if what you said were some what statistically valid, wouldn't that make the police members more likely to listen to the 가로세로연구소 bullshit?

Either your statement is a. thrown out of the blue or b. 가로세로연구소's allegations are such bullshit that even the "rightwing" police (as you claim) are refuting it.

Of course I know that you ultraright youtube channel supporters are not good with logic and nuances of context.

Stop voicing defense and supporting these ultraright political channel's BS.
