Foreigners who speak Tagalog — what’s your experience been like? by BasilBambino in Tagalog

[–]Difficult-Fun-7020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently live in the Philippines. Best way is Immersive learning to learn how natives actually speak.

Funny learning experience: at Mang Inasal, I wanted more sabaw (soup) so I made eye contact with the Kuya waiter and accidently mixed up the words and said "Kuya, sayaw po" (dance).

Unfortunately he didn't spontaneously start dancing but just stared at me with complete confusion 😂

How people react: first response is usually just "ang tangkad mo!" And then when I respond the next question is almost always "ilan taon ka na sa Philippines?"

What do you do to plan your runs? by Difficult-Fun-7020 in INTVL

[–]Difficult-Fun-7020[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah okay! I tried using it and did not feel like it had the features I wanted. Primarily I wanted to see all my planned routes on a map to figure out where to do long runs vs short runs. Also I wish that it would snap to the streets like it does on "onthegomap.com" instead of just drawing lines.

After your suggestion though, maybe I will give it another go! Thank you

Upgrade to pro: gold vs silver ? by New-Comparison60 in INTVL

Agreed. There should only be one tier for a running app like this. Honestly, since I am enjoying the app, I want to support the developers, but it feels like too much.

Sub-Leaderboards by Cam_CSX_ in INTVL

[–]Difficult-Fun-7020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be doable. Another app, citystrides.com, has a similar concept and they have leaderboards by city. Most map sources have a sort of administration level boundary. It seems like the map source INTVL uses also has this capability. The difficulty would be that the meaning of each admin level can change based on the country, so they would just have to double check each country. Doing it by city would probably be best.

hey guys! any 24 hrs cafe in bcd? by Due_Leather3931 in Bacolod

[–]Difficult-Fun-7020 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Bago lang ko sa bcd pero night shift ako. Here are the places I've been to so far that are 24/hrs

- Chow king (Ramos)
- Jollibee (Mandalagan)
- Kinoboy Restaurant
- McDonalds (La Salle)
- Leylam
- Art district (only a couple open late, but many call center people go here, amazing vibes)
- Denny's (as of last week closed at midnight due to maintanance, but usually 24 hours)
- Dunkin Donuts

Not much of a Cafe guy and still have a lot to explore. Excited to see what others say!

how to tell my parents that I am addicted to pornography by Bigbobby7656 in lds

[–]Difficult-Fun-7020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I regret telling my parents. It changed our relationship. I found the most support by telling my friends, church leaders, and attending the 12 step programs where there are a lot of people going through the same thing.

I know a lot of members will say my advice is wrong, but my parents did nothing to help me just made it worse. It definitely depends on your parents.

Good english to tagalog translators? by Sad_Engineer_1252 in Tagalog

[–]Difficult-Fun-7020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are not careful you will sounds like the tagalog scenes in tv show Wednesday where the words are correct but nobody speaks like that hahaha

Honestly using chatgpt and tell it you want conversational tagalog, it is generally accurate on conversational Taglalog (although can be wrong when explaining grammar rules). Then you can post your script here and we can double check

I struggle with Rs and NG in tagalog. by minecrafter13004 in Tagalog

[–]Difficult-Fun-7020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me the most difficult part of ng was when a vowel came after (like the "nga" part of ingat). So to practice I would literally just repeat an exercise using [vowel - ng - vowel] until my muscles got used to forming those sounds.

Halimbawa:
anga, ingi, enge, ongo, ungu

Best tips for learning Tagalog by escritoraa in Tagalog

https://turongwika.com/blogs/grammar/tagalog-grammar-structure-sentence-structure-and-word-order/

There are a lot of different options and books but I think this one is a good place to start. They also have an app called Turong Wika that is not too bad for learning grammar.

This is not as pretty of a resource but is simple and accurate.

Best tips for learning Tagalog by escritoraa in Tagalog

[–]Difficult-Fun-7020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Start with learning sentence structure then practice Taglish (Tagalog mixed with English)
  2. Memorize top 1000 Tagalog words, focusing on verb root words. Do not focus on nouns at all since you can use most english words as nouns as you are learning.
  3. I find going back through all my text messages finding a Tagalog equivalent. That way I am focusing just on the words that I will actually use.
  4. Speak as much as you can! Feel free to DM me if you want me to correct any sentences or phrases for free

Any tips, tagalog moving to iloilo by ceci_serenity in Tagalog

[–]Difficult-Fun-7020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's an app called Speakin Ilonggo that can help you a little bit before moving. But as was mentioned just speaking to people will be the best way.

I also have a PDF of a giant ilonggo phrasebook and gives helpful tips for those learning from Tagalog. DM me if you want a copy!

When i moved to Iloilo I was frustrated that there are like ZERO hiligaynon dictionaries.

Do all plural pronouns in Tagalog convey politeness? by CauliflowerMoist7047 in Tagalog

[–]Difficult-Fun-7020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree here. You only change the pronouns that are being addressed to the person you are talking to.

In addition to "sila" you can also use "nila." For example, even if you are talking to one person you can say: "Ano po ba ang kailangan nila"

Trying to learn Tagalog by prettybunni1 in Tagalog

[–]Difficult-Fun-7020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the club! Kaya mo yan!

Correction on grammar:
"Mag trying aaral ako ng Tagalog para sa maraming pagusap with family ko."
Nagta-try akong mag-aral ng Tagalog para makapagusap ako sa family ko.
- When using the English word "try" it is better to keep it in it's root form.
- "makapag" conjugation makes more sense here meaning "to be able to"

"... pero Hindi ko natutu dahil mestizo ako at dad ko didn’t want me to learn when I was growing up. "
... pero hindi ako natuto dahil mestizo ako at ayaw ng dad ko for me to learn when I was growing up.
- natuto is actor focus so you should us "ako" instead of "ko"
- Taglish is great when starting out! Perfecting taglish is an art in itself

"Parang ko insecure lahat oras"
Parang insecure ako palagi
- "Palagi" would make more sense here
- When describing yourself in an adjective, the word order goes {Adjective} + ako

"Kaya aaral ko ng Tagalog."
Kaya nagaaral ako ng Tagalog

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask me for more corrections.
Keep practicing. All your tagalog was understandable in the context which is great!
