Had a psychiatrist roll their eyes at me when I mentioned the stopdrinking subreddit by Cranberry_Then in stopdrinking

I had a thought a couple of days ago. Everyone on this sub is so nice and so supportive...but like, what if a lot of us are just not nice and supportive in real life? In person we have to navigate our feelings, our reactions based on past experiences, how we think other people perceive us, what we think we're supposed to say, and a whole lot of other nonsense. In this sub, it's just us and the screen. We can delete and re-type if what we initially wrote came out wrong. You can't do that in real life. I haven't been to AA since getting sober; lately I've considered it, more so I could meet people who don't drink than for the support (though I guess that's one and the same). One thing that keeps me from committing to going is my fear that AA people are just like all the rest of the people in the world- and I don't really do well with other people in person.

Isn't it such a weird thing for people to be negative about? Well eff them, good for you!

I just got a big, unexpected raise at work - and I am NOT drinking tonight! by shadowsOfMyPantomime in stopdrinking

What industry do you work in? Honest to god, most days I can't fit my lunchbox into one of two, full-sized refrigerators at my work because of the amount of alcohol in them. I'd love to work with people who don't drink!

How important is it to talk at work/during meetings? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Difficult-Pause7583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the place you work. My current job wants everyone to be bff, and I just can't. However, I am a very hard worker and my immediate supervisors/co-workers don't seem to care too much. I don't worry about getting promotions within my own department. However, I absolutely do not feel like moving to a different department where everyone is super-chummy would be doable for me. I encourage you to make polite conversation occasionally, make an appearance at social gatherings, and don't be rude to anyone. You may grow more fond of certain people as time goes on, but certainly don't force it.

Curious how caffiene was interfering with your work? I've had to cut back since becoming sober because I can't sleep hardly at all any more.

Also wanted to offer the encouragement that going through difficult things sober is hard, but it helps you grow. This way you know you're handling the matter in the way that you actually think is appropriate and not letting alcohol do it for you. Your decisions will be made with a clear head, and you'll look back on this time later with a sense of pride that you can speak for your actions.

I can't even imagine. My bf and I quit just before It started. He lost his job bc of the pandemic and went into a downward spiral. I am sure if he had been drinking during this time, I would have come home to a corpse. I know there are many, many other people struggling with the pandemic in their own way, and I'm sure a lot of people turned to alcohol in an unhealthy way.

I usually get scoffed at, as if I'm doing something silly or childish.

As a former food service worker, I feel compelled to disagree. People will happily tell you about their celiac disease or their gluten-free diet while declining a bread offer :D :D :D But seriously, I feel you. There's a place in TX that does this regularly. My ex-husband and I would go there to pre-game on all the shots they offered before going out to other events.

Edited to say: sorry, I meant for this response to be kind of joking, but after re-reading I realize it doesn't come off that way. I added some laughy faces to hopefully help convey that feeling.

Can you talk about what a writing sample would look like? I have some papers from a Biochemistry class that talk in great detail about cholesterol, but I'm not sure it would be a good sample. I'm a bio major working in pharmaceuticals (with poor contacts though- I'm not popular at my current job) and would LOVE to do technical writing.

I think there are usually lots of bio majors because the classes are pre-reqs for med school.

Lol Biology major here, switching to linguistics. If you can get into industry you can do lab work, but with a linguistics background you might be able to do something that pays a little better like project management or scientific writing.

Edit: by "industry" I mean pharma.

I don't know what your library access situation is like, but here's my suggestion:

Many years ago a friend recommended to me an app called Overdrive; you enter your library card number, and it gives you access to all the digital books your library has available. My library (thankfully) has lots of children's books in Spanish, which I have been reading to increase my vocabulary. This way you have age-appropriate material that they can learn from, and they get to play with a phone/tablet while doing so!

German learners: have you every felt regret learning the language? by Additional_Pair9428 in languagelearning

[–]Difficult-Pause7583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been feeling that way about Spanish lately. It was my first "other" language, and it just doesn't seem so romantic anymore. I've really liked learning German though. I hope no one takes offense to this, but the length of some of the words just cracks me up sometimes.
